Valera drives in three in OKC win

Oklahoma City rallies back to remain unbeaten at home, Great Lakes wins second in a row and Tulsa hangs on to victory. Rancho Cucamonga loses a tough one in Lancaster.

Player of the day

Breyvic Valera has played 817 games in the minor leagues with only 17 of those in the Dodger organization. Valera has made them count by having a great first month in Oklahoma City.

Valera has an 1.008 OPS in 60 plate appearances and on Sunday he went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and run-scoring single.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

The Dodgers fell behind by three runs but battled back to win 5-3 over the Iowa Cubs. The win gave the Dodgers a 12-0 record at home this month and a 5-game series sweep against the Cubs.

In the third inning, Breyvic Valera hit a two-out two-run homer to get the Dodgers back in the game. And in the fifth inning, Velera drives in the go-ahead run with a single.

Catcher Cael Brockmeyer was 3-for-3 with a double and two runs scored and Alex Burg had two hits and two RBI.

Manny Bañuelos pitched five innings and got the win. Yimi Garcia pitched a scoreless inning in relief. Brian Schlitter recorded his fifth save.

Double-A Tulsa

The Drillers held on to a 3-2 win on Sunday against the NW Arkansas Naturals (Royals) despite the tying run on third with less than two outs in both the eighth and ninth innings. Josh Sborz pitched 1⅓ innings to get his fourth save.

Trailing by two runs, the Drillers came back on a solo home run from Yusniel Diaz and a two-run double by Will Smith. Diaz did not start his season until April 19th, in eight games, Diaz is hitting .400/.500/.700 in 36 plate appearances.

Caleb Ferguson had his second solid start this week. Ferguson pitched six innings, giving up a two unearned runs and six hits. Ferguson struck out six and walked two.

Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes gave up four runs in the seventh and then a run in the eighth in their 7-6 loss to the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies). Quakes pitchers gave up four walks in the seventh to aid the JetHawks comeback.

Tony Gonsolin started for the Quakes and pitched five innings. Gonsolin allowed two runs and three hits. After pitching a scoreless sixth, Chris Mathewson walked the first three hitters in the seventh, a single and ground out tied the game.

After the JetHawks went ahead in the seventh, the Quakes tied the game Zach Reks hit his second home run of the game to tie the game. But in the bottom of the eighth, Max George doubled in the go-ahead run that led to the JetHawks win.

Zach Reks had three hits including his first two home runs of the season, Hamlet Marte also hit his first home run of the season in the loss.

Class-A Great Lakes

The Loons had a four-run and three-run inning and behind those big innings, they beat the South Bend Cubs 9-4. Jesus Vargas had his third consecutive five-inning start and his third straight win.

Vargas gave up three unearned runs in this start, along with five hits and a walk. Logan Salow made his Dodger organization debut by pitching a scoreless inning.

Brayan Morales had four hits with a double and triple, Nick Yarnall had three hits and two RBI.

Transactions

Triple-A: Los Angeles recalled right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart from Oklahoma City; infielder Wes Darvill and right-handed pitcher Emmanuel De Leon assigned to Oklahoma City from Tulsa.

Class-A: Los Angeles Dodgers optioned right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler to Rancho Cucamonga.
