The Dodgers in between games of their doubleheader against the Nationals activated relief pitcher Erik Goeddel, and optioned Pat Venditte to Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Goeddel was claimed off waivers from the Mariners on Friday, and in five games with Seattle allowed one run on four hits in 7⅓ innings, with nine strikeouts and five walks. He will wear number 62 with the Dodgers.
Venditte allowed two runs in 2⅔ innings in his three appearances this week for the Dodgers, striking out two.
Yimi Garcia was also officially added as the 26th man for the second game of the doubleheader for the Dodgers. He has a 3.24 ERA in four major league relief appearances this season, with four strikeouts and a walk in 3⅓ innings.
Rich Hill makes the 125th start of his big league career and his third since missing three weeks with a cracked fingernail and subsequent infection on the middle finger of his left hand.
Max Scherzer starts the nightcap for the Nationals, itching to get back on the mound after weather delayed his week. He was supposed to start Wednesday but that game was rained out, then he was anxious to start Friday but that was rained out, too.
I asked Martinez if he would consider starting someone else tonight knowing the delay is coming, he said “You want to tell Max that?? He’s been in my office four times already.”

Scherzer last pitched last Friday, making this start on a full seven days of rest. He struck out nine in six innings in a win over the Dodgers in Los Angeles on Apr. 20, and amid Scherzer’s great season that was tied for his second-shortest start and one of just three times in nine tries he has struck out single digits in a game.
Hill and Scherzer both enter the nightcap with 13 walks. Hill has 25 strikeouts and Scherzer has 91.
