Dodgers Week 13: Dingers!

Los Angeles Dodgers v New York Mets Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images

The Dodgers lost their first series in quite a while last week, dropping two of three games against the Cubs, a series that began with a rainout at Wrigley Field, followed by the Dodgers’ third doubleheader of the season. But they rebounded to still win four of their six games during the week, thanks to weekend trip to Citi Field.

After dropping two of three in Chicago the Dodgers welcomed their matchup with the lowly Mets, hitting 11 home runs in a three-game sweep in New York, including a whopping seven solo shots in the Sunday finale.

The Dodgers have beaten the Mets in 12 straight games, dating back to 2016, and have outscored New York 91-30 and out-homered them 41-17. Put another way, the Dodgers in their last 12 meetings with the Mets have hit more home runs than they have allowed runs.

Batter of the week

Cody Bellinger found his power stroke during the weekend, hitting a grand slam on Friday and two solo shots on Sunday in New York. Bellinger in 10 career games against the Mets has eight home runs and 16 RBI, and the Dodgers have won all 10.

Pitcher of the week

Caleb Ferguson gets this award thanks to four scoreless innings of relief on Saturday, striking out six for his first major league win. Seven different Dodgers relievers posted scoreless relief work for the week.

Miscellany

Power party: The Dodgers, with six games remaining in June, are slugging .527 for the month. They have only slugged .500 in a month four times in franchise history, with a high of .520 in June 1950 in Brooklyn.

Double-digit dingers: Joc Pederson has nine home runs and Max Muncy eight in June. The Dodgers have never had two players hit 10 home runs in the same month.

Double-digit dingers, part deux: Pederson’s home run Sunday was his 10th of the season, giving the Dodgers six different players with at least 10 home runs on the season, through 76 team games. Last year was the first time in franchise history that the club had six players with 20 home runs. In addition, Yasiel Puig has nine home runs and is on pace for 19.

First one is the sweetest: After starting his first three major league appearance, Caleb Ferguson was used in relief on Saturday at Citi Field, piggybacking Clayton Kershaw ‘s first start back from the disabled list. Ferguson struck out six in four scoreless innings and earned his first major league win.

Get in line: Ferguson was the 19th different pitcher to get a win for the Dodgers this season. That’s one more than they had all of last season. The club record is 23 pitchers with a win in 2016.

Friday: Chase Utley was activated from the disabled list after missing 19 games with a sprained left thumb.
