Dodgers Week 14: Mediocrity

MLB: Chicago Cubs at Los Angeles Dodgers Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers had their first losing week since mid-May, splitting a four-game series with the Cubs and dropping two of three to the Rockies. But the win Sunday to avoid getting swept, allowed the Dodgers to remain where they were in the standings at the start of the week.

The series with Chicago could have gone much differently if it weren’t for two costly mistakes on the Dodgers side. Yasiel Puig didn’t catch a ball that hit his glove top of the sixth Tuesday, eventually leading to a six-run sixth inning in a 9-4 loss. The crushing blow was a grand slam off the bat of Javy Baez.

Two day later, Walker Buehler followed up five solid innings from Clayton Kershaw by attempting what was essentially a major league rehab. The right-hander recored just three outs and was charged with five runs on five hits. A 3-1 lead quickly turned to a 10-3 deficit as the Cubs scored two in the sixth and seven in the seventh, going on to win 11-5.

Puig rarely has a defensive miscue like he did Tuesday and Buehler shouldn’t have been facing a Cubs lineup after not pitching for two weeks. The Dodgers optioned him the next day after the plan for their young right-hander collapsed.

Batter of the week

Max Muncy continued to be an on-base machine, hitting .412/.565/.765 (7-for-17) with two homers, six runs, three RBI, six walks and even a stolen base. The 27-year-old reached base in 13 of his 23 plate appearances

Pitcher of the week

Rich Hill pitched his heart out on Friday, holding the Rockies to just one run over six and two-thirds innings while striking out 10 batters on 110 pitches. A solo homer in the fifth was only damage against the Dodger lefty. Colorado would go on to win that game 3-1 after tacking on two more solo homers.
