Dodgers Week 19: To the extremes

MLB: Houston Astros at Los Angeles Dodgers Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

The Dodgers had an odd week, on one hand setting the record for most runs scored at Dodger Stadium, then two nights later suffering their worst shutout loss in Chavez Ravine history.

That’s how, despite a 21-5 win, the Dodgers ended the week scoring the same around of runs as they allowed, and dropped four of seven games. They finished their 17-game stretch out of the All-Star break — all against contending teams — at 9-8.

After splitting four with the Brewers and dropping two of three to their old World Series foes, the Astros, the Dodgers end their week tied atop the NL West with Arizona, with a two-game lead over Colorado.

The Dodgers added a pair of players before Tuesday’s non-waiver trade deadline. Second baseman Brian Dozier provided immediate impact, while reliever John Axford had an inauspicious Dodgers debut, and has a triple-digit ERA to show for it, for now.

Batter of the week

Brian Dozier technically arrived on Tuesday, though it was too late that night to be used. His first game was Wednesday, but still led the Dodgers in RBI (7), hits (6) and doubles (3) while hitting .400.

His hot start helped offset slumps by Matt Kemp (1 for his last 35) and Max Muncy (seven straight strikeouts to end the week). The Dodgers scored three or fewer runs in five of their seven games last week, averaging two runs per game outside of the 21-run outburst.

Pitcher of the week

Walker Buehler had two solid starts, with a 2.19 ERA and more strikeouts (15) than innings (12⅓). He suffered the deGromian loss on Tuesday despite allowing only a run in seven innings. Honorable mention to Dylan Floro, who pitched five scoreless, hitless innings with five strikeouts.
