Do the Bryce Harper-Dodgers Rumors Hold Any Weight?

With the Bryce Harper chase reportedly coming to a close this week (his decision is expected at the end of the week), more teams have jumped back in for Bryce Harper. The field includes the Phillies, Yankees, Giants and the Dodgers. The Phillies are prepared to offer Bryce the bank in a lucrative long-term deal. The Yankees could be interested in doing the same, but with Aaron Hicks receiving his extension of $70 million over 7 years, Luis Severino with $40 million over the next four years, and Giancarlo Stanton still with his massive long term deal it’s understandable if the Yankees get cold feet.

The Dodgers, much like the Giants, are likely looking at a short term deal for the former National League MVP. Harper and his camp seemingly won’t budge on a long term deal, so would Harper take fewer years to play for a world series contender? All signs point to no, as Harper’s camp likely remains fixated on receiving a deal that has more money in it than Giancarlo Stanton’s record-breaking deal. If Bryce wants to remain close to home, however, and again, play for a world series contender then the Dodgers should absolutely be his choice. With Corey Seager coming back this year and Harper’s powerful bat entering the lineup with newly acquired AJ Pollock, the Dodgers would be an absolute force. Furthermore, Clayton Kershaw seemingly has a limited window on which he can perform at an ace level due to injuries, and the front office should do whatever it takes to take advantage of the years Clayton has left. Again, it's not likely that Bryce signs on a short term contract, but anything is possible. Just remember, with David Freese, Rich Hill, Hyun-Jin Ryu, Russell Martin etc. coming off the books, the Dodgers can absolutely sign Bryce Harper at a deal that has a $30-$33 million AAV. They’ll just need to eat the luxury tax that is coming this season.

Should the Dodgers sign Bryce Harper?
