There was a ninth inning situation on Saturday that caused some controversy. Gleyber Torres was halfway to home plate when the home plate umpire granted time due to a second base collision. Torres was the tying run, which is what made people take a harder look at it. CBS Sports wrote a piece about how some of the Yankees players felt about this.
ESPN published a story about the Dodgers’ seven comeback walk-off wins.
It has pretty much become a matter of not “if” but of “who” and “how” this season at Dodger Stadium.
On Thursday night, “who” was Enrique Hernandez, with assists from Corey Seager and Cody Bellinger (who else?), as the Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off their latest walk-off win.
Around the league ...
The Cubs decided to use their regular caps during the first day of Players Weekend, and it didn’t go over so well with MLB.
After the Cubs went rogue in the only afternoon game, several other teams around baseball did likewise Friday night, opting to have all their players wear non-sanctioned hats. A major-league source said MLB sent an edict Saturday instructing teams to follow the rules.
It was announced on Saturday that Pablo Sandoval will need Tommy John surgery.
Sandoval is eligible for free agency at the end of the season, and Bochy is hoping his pinch-hit appearance against the Phillies on Aug. 9 won’t go down as his final at-bat with the Giants. Bochy said he’d like to try to get Sandoval one more at-bat at Oracle Park next week if his body can handle it.
The Mets tied an MLB record for most strikeouts in a game. With the help of five extra innings, they K’d 24 batters.
