The Dodgers set their roster for the National League Championship Series on Monday morning, adding Edwin Ríos and Alex Wood to the 28-player active group.
Gavin Lux and Terrance Gore, who were active in the NLDS, aren’t active for this round.
Ríos is back on the active roster after missing the NLDS with a groin injury, suffered during a workout on Oct. 4. He’s been a participant in workouts, taking ground balls and facing pitches over the last few days.
“He ran today and looked good. I said [Saturday] he was 75 percent, and I think he was a tick above that today,” manager Dave Roberts said Sunday. “But to think he’s anything more than a pinch hitter right now, for the first couple days, would probably be aggressive.”
Getting Ríos back adds a potent bat into the mix, especially if he’s able to start later in the series. The left-hander hit .250/.301/.645 with eight home runs in 83 plate appearances this season. As a pinch hitter this season, Ríos was 0-for-4 with a walk and a hit by pitch.
Wood was also added, giving the Dodgers 15 pitchers on their 28-player roster. He had a 6.39 ERA and 5.01 FIP in nine games, with 15 strikeouts and six walks in 12⅔ innings,
The Braves hit .248/.329/.425, a 101 wRC+ against left-handed pitchers this season, compared to .273/.354/.498, a 126 wRC+ against right-handers.
That the Dodgers have settled on eight regular starting position players against both right- and left-handed pitchers, it made it easier to reduce the bench in order to add an extra pitcher for a potentially marathon week of games.
“When you’re talking about potentially seven days in a row, that’s where I think that, looking at our position players as far as potential matches, we have a lot of neutral guys,” Roberts said Sunday. “Now that brings into question of another arm, because of the seven days in a row.”
Gore, who was active in the first two rounds as a pinch-running specialist but did not play in any of the five games, was left off the NLCS roster.
Lux was active during the NLDS, but only got one at-bat, pinch hitting at the end of the Game 3 blowout, striking out in the ninth inning.
The Braves are also carrying 15 pitchers for the NLCS, including old friend Grant Dayton and other Will Smith.
