Our latest foray into Dodgers lore brings us to the 1998 All-Star Game, in which both Dodgers representatives did not start the season with the team.
Most notably, closer Jeff Shaw made his Dodgers debut in the midsummer classic, as he was acquired from the Reds three days before the game. Our first time seeing Shaw wear a Dodgers uniform came during pregame introductions, a truly bizarre moment in a bizarre time in Dodgers history.
The other Dodgers representative in this game was Gary Sheffield, who was acquired in May for Mike Piazza, who started at catcher for the National League for a fifth straight season, only this time wearing a Mets uniform.
On the heels of the ‘Long Gone Summer’ ESPN documentary on the home run chase in 1998 between Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa, let’s sit back and enjoy the height of the steroid era at the most offensive-friendly ballpark possible.
We’ll watch this game starting at 5 p.m. PT on YouTube:
