For the first time, the Dodgers and Giants will meet in the postseason, and it comes in a season when both teams set franchise record for victories. The 107-win Giants will play the 106-win Dodgers in the 2021 National League Division series beginning Friday night at Oracle Park in San Francisco.
Los Angeles clinched an NLDS berth against their rivals by beating the Cardinals on Wednesday in the NL wild card game at Dodger Stadium. This is just the third time the Dodgers and Giants have made the postseason in the same year, and unlike in 2014, this time LA got past St. Louis.
Game 1 of the NLDS will start at 6:37 p.m. PT, with Game 2 set for 6:07 p.m.. Game 3 on Monday at Dodger Stadium will start at 6:37 p.m., with Games 4 and 5 starting at 6:07 p.m., if necessary.
The Dodgers tied their 2019 team record with 106 wins, but it wasn’t enough to win a ninth straight National League West crown. The Giants, who beat the Dodgers in all three series after all the All-Star break and won the season series against Los Angeles 10 games to nine, won 107 games, surpassing their team record set in New York in 1904.
Despite finishing with the second-best record in baseball, the Dodgers were relegated to a one-and-done wild card game.
“I think all the 106 games are out the window now. It didn’t help us win the division, so it’s really irrelevant,” Mookie Betts said before Wednesday’s game. “We’re in the spot we are now. We’ve got to play the hand we’re dealt. It’s just one game. Same thing we’ve been doing all season.”
Walker Buehler will start Game 1 of the NLDS on Friday for the Dodgers, with Julio Urías starting Game 2 on Saturday.
Max Scherzer, who started the wild card game on Wednesday, wouldn’t start until Game 3 on Monday at Dodger Stadium.
Giants manager Gabe Kapler told reporters Wednesday that Logan Webb would start Game 1 for San Francisco, with Kevin Gausman starting Game 2. After that is TBD.
Kapler says opponent might come into play for Game 3 starter, and the logical conclusion there is LH Wood the likely choice vs. LA and DeSclafani vs. STL.
