Three Dodgers draft picks from 2020 will play their first professional games with the Great Lakes Loons, who are now a High-A team. The Loons unveiled their opening day roster on Monday.
Bobby Miller, the Dodgers’ first-round draft pick in 2020, headlines the roster. Other 2020 picks joining him in Great Lakes are pitcher Clayton Beeter (Competitive Balance Round B, just after the second round), and catcher Carson Taylor (fourth round). Great Lakes’ roster also includes eight players drafted in 2019 and six more from 2018.
Miguel Vargas, the 21-year-old third baseman signed out of Cuba in 2017, was a non-roster invitee in Dodgers camp in spring training. He was listed by The Athletic as the No. 75 overall prospect in baseball before the season.
The youngest player on Great Lakes is power-hitting outfielder Andy Pages, who turned 20 in December He was a non-roster invitee as well.
The Loons have been a Dodgers affiliate since 2007, but were a Low-A team until the minor league reorganization this offseason shifted the Midwest League — now called High-A Central — to High-A. Great Lakes opens its season at home on Tuesday night against Dayton, the opener of a six-game series against the Reds affiliate.
Austin Chubb, a former catcher who played in the Dodgers’ and Nationals minors, is the Loons manager. He managed in rookie-level Ogden in 2019.
