Trevor Bauer’s administrative leave extended again by MLB, through August 6

A third extension of administrative leave, with legal proceedings and investigations ongoing.

Major League Baseball on Tuesday extended the paid administrative leave of Dodgers pitcher Trevor Bauer through August 6, per multiple reports. This is the third extension of his leave as investigations of sexual assault remain ongoing.

Bauer was originally placed on administrative leave on July 2 for seven days, per the league’s joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy, three days after a temporary restraining order was filed against him in Los Angeles Superior Court.

MLB extended the leave on July 8 for another seven days, then later extended the leave through July 27. Both moves came with the agreement of the MLB Players Association, as did Tuesday’s extension.

This extension comes as Bauer’s legal proceedings are still ongoing.

A court hearing on the restraining order against Bauer began on Friday in Los Angeles, but was delayed until August 2, from the Associated Press:

Attorneys for Bauer and for the woman revealed during a short court session that they intend to call several witnesses, including Bauer, and argue over the order in what amounts to a trial that is expected to last three days.

Administrative leave getting extended isn’t anything new in MLB. Of the six previous in-season suspensions under the joint domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse policy, five were extended at least once. Those six players were suspended for an average of 64 games, with lengths ranging from 20 games (Julio Urías in 2019) to 85 games (Odubel Herrera in 2019).

Since Bauer was placed on administrative leave, Nationals infielder Starlin Castro was also placed on leave by MLB, and had said leave extended once to date, through Thursday.
