With the 2021 MLB Draft taking place in a few days, why don’t we take a trip down memory lane? The Dodgers have had some incredible draft picks during their storied history, but which one was their best pick?
Well, this one is as easy as you’d think it is to predict. The answer is Clayton Kershaw. The Dodgers selected the best pitcher of our generation with the seventh overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft.
Kershaw was ranked by The Athletic as the Dodgers’ best draft pick ever, and the ninth best draft pick in MLB history. Here’s what they had to say:
Kershaw has won three Cy Young Awards, finished runner-up two other times and sports a career ERA+ of 156, the fifth-highest in history behind Mariano Rivera, Negro Leagues stars Bill Foster and Bullet Rogan, and Jacob deGrom. He also claimed an elusive championship last summer and is already the Dodgers’ career leader in WAR. Yes, not just among players who were drafted. Among everybody in franchise history.
It’s one thing to have one of the best pitchers we’ve ever seen on your team. It’s even better when he’s entirely home grown.
