There’s still over a week left in the season and it’s looking all but likely the Dodgers will be playing either a Game 163 or in the Wild Card game.
With 10 games remaining, the Dodgers trail the Giants by two games in the NL West. If both teams finish the season with the same record, the Giants will host the Dodgers in a Game 163 to determine the winner of the division. The loser would host the Wild Card Game.
With a number of solid options for the Dodgers to start either game, manager Dave Roberts shared with reporters on Thursday who would be taking the mound for LA if one of those games is needed — and his answer doesn’t come as a surprise at all.
Max Scherzer.
“There’s no doubt in my mind,” Roberts said when asked if Scherzer would be the starter. “I think he’s the best pitcher in baseball.”
At the moment, Scherzer is clearly the best pitcher in the game. Since joining the Dodgers at the trade deadline, the future Hall-of-Famer has been practically untouchable. LA has won every game he’s started, while he’s posted an incredible 0.78 ERA and 1.35 FIP.
There’s nobody in baseball pitching better, and he’s 100 percent the guy you want on the mound in the biggest game of the season.
If I were to guess, the Dodgers would likely have Scherzer pitch in a Game 163 if necessary and then turn to Walker Buehler in the Wild Card game if needed. If LA fails to win the division, load up Scherzer for that WC Game.
