Dodgers impress on the mound and at the plate on Sunday

The Dodgers scored seven runs in the first inning and cruised to a 12-1 win over the Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon at Camelback Ranch. The inning was highlighted by a two-run homer from Freddie Freeman and a Chris Taylor grand slam.

The Dodgers will play their final Sunday game in Arizona today against the Diamondbacks. With just three games left following today, it will be interesting to see if the Dodgers play their probable major league position players more in the final days.

Right-handed pitcher Gavin Stone will make his third start of the spring, Stone is in the running to be the fifth starter and this will be another opportunity to lock that down.

Other pitchers that could see mound time today include Matt Gage, Nabil Crismatt, Kevin Gowdy and Dinelson Lamet.

Dodgers combine to hit five home runs in as Dodgers are now 8-2 this spring

The Dodgers had two strong offensive games today as they won 8-5 over the Cubs at Camelback Ranch and 11-3 against the Brewers at Maryvale.

At Camelback Ranch, Dodger left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough pitched 2⅓ innings, giving up a solo home run to Matt Mervis in the second to give the Cubs an early lead.

That lead was short-lived because in the bottom of the second, Andy Pages hit a no-doubter with two on to make it 3-1.

Dodgers beat A’s 4-2 to remain unbeaten this spring

Home runs from James Outman and Max Muncy and solid pitching from multiple Dodgers was enough for a 4-2 win over the A’s at Camelback Ranch. Nine different pitchers toed the rubber for the home team with only one of them being scored upon.

Outman stared the scoring with a solo home run in the second inning. It was notable because it came off left-handed pitcher Kyle Muller. Outman hit just one of his 23 home runs last year off a left-handed pitcher.

The Dodgers return to Camelback Ranch today to host the Oakland A’s for their fourth spring training game.
Today’s Dodger starting pitcher Kyle Hurt made his major league debut last September 12th against the Padres when he retired all six Padres he faced to close out an 11-2 win for the Dodgers. With that being Hurt’s only major league appearance, he retains his rookie status going into the 2024 season.

Only two of the Dodgers full season affiliates played on Saturday and they split with Oklahoma City’s rally falling just short while Tulsa cruised to a victory.

Oklahoma City did take an early lead but Tacoma was able to continue to put runs on the board with a five-run seventh giving the Rainiers a 11-6 lead that they would hang on to in the end.

Yusniel Diaz homered and drove in four runs. Imanol Vargas hit his 22nd home run and Kody Hoese homered and doubled in his 3-for-4 night.

Kendall Williams pitched five innings and evened his record to 3-3 with Tulsa. Strong relief from Braydon Fisher who pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three. Kevin Gowdy also pitched a scoreless inning.

The Dodgers scored five in the 11th inning to take the NL West

The Dodgers clinched their tenth National League West Division title in eleven seasons with their 6-2 win in eleven innings at Seattle tonight. Run-scoring hits from Max Muncy, Chris Taylor and Kiké Hernández gave the Dodgers a five-run lead and Joe Kelly was able to close it out without too much trouble.

And that all came after it seemed like the Dodgers were going to clinch when they had two outs in the bottom of the tenth with a one-run lead or Arizona was going to lose their game to the Cubs. But then the Diamondbacks rallied to get a walk-off win and the Mariners tied the game to send to the eleventh inning.

Key hits for the win

With runners on first and second and one out in the eleventh inning, Max Muncy dug out a pitch and served it into the left-center to give the Dodgers the lead again. It also was Muncy’s 100th RBI this season.

Dodger pitchers shut down the Mariners

Seven pitchers took the mound for the Dodgers on Saturday and they were able to pitch well in a playoff atmosphere in Seattle.

Clayton Kershaw returned to mound and while his velocity was still down, he was able to pitch four scoreless innings to kick start the strong game for the Dodger pitchers.

Also, it seems having Kershaw start a potential division title clinching game is a good thing.

What is left for the Dodgers to do in the regular season

The Dodgers are trying to secure at least the second seed in the National League to give them a first-round bye. Their magic number is any combination eight Dodger wins or Brewer losses to give them that spot.

The Dodgers will begin play with the knowledge that a win will clinch their tenth National West title in the last eleven seasons. Now, if both the Giants and Diamondbacks lose their respective games tonight, the Dodgers could win the division before their game is over but in any case, their title fate is now in the Dodger’s control.

More importantly, Clayton Kershaw returns to the mound to start their potential division-clinching game. Kershaw’s last start was on September 5th in Miami and that outing was marked by the lowest recorded fastball velocity in his career.

Earlier this week, manager Dave Roberts commented that the bullpen that Kershaw threw on Tuesday was good and he feels good about tonight’s start.

The Dodgers collected their first minor league title this season as the Dominican Summer League concluded their season today and LAD Bautista won the best-of-3 series, two games to one game over the Pirates Gold team, winning the third game 9-5.

In the winner-take-all final, 17-year-old Joendry Vargas homered in the first inning to give his team a lead that they never lost. Vargas would go 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Dodgers would take a 8-2 lead before Pirates scored three runs in the late inning to make the final score.
