SECAUCUS, NJ -- The first day of the 2014 MLB Draft is upon us, with all eyes upon Secaucus, New Jersey for the first two rounds on Thursday. All in all, 74 picks will be made on Thursday - the first round, competitive balance round A, second round, then competitive balance round B - of which the Dodgers have two picks: No. 22 and No. 62 overall.
Thursday's action will be televised live by MLB Network and simulcast on MLB.com, beginning with a pre-draft show at 3 p.m. PT, with the beginning of the draft at 4 p.m. Each club will have at least one representative on hand at the MLB Network studios. Tommy Lasorda and Charlie Hough will represent the Dodgers.
Seven amateur players were invited to attend the draft in person, including Florida high school shortstop Nick Gordon, brother of Dodgers second baseman Dee Gordon. Gordon the younger is expected to be picked in the first round, likely even in the first 10 picks. One thing is certain: Nick will be drafted earlier than brother Dee (fourth round, 2008) and father Tom (sixth round, 1986).
"I didn't know if I was going to get drafted," Dee Gordon said last week. "At least he'll get to see his name called and go up to shake someone's hand.
"I don't think he's nervous. It's something he's been wanting to do his whole life, so I think he's ready."
Nick is represented by Beverly Hills Sports Council, the same agent as his father and brother, but Dee said it wasn't so simple six years ago when he was drafted.
"My dad made me shut my phone off, so I didn't see anything. My dad was actually taking all the phone calls from the bullpen in Philly."
Tom Gordon was still pitching, in his 20th big league season, a member of the Phillies, who were home to face the Reds. Tom didn't end up pitching on June 5, the day the Dodgers drafted Dee.
