The Dodgers selected right-handed pitcher Wills Montgomerie out of the University of Connecticut with their sixth-round selection of the 2017 MLB Draft, pick No. 190 overall.
Montgomerie was 6-3 with a 3.73 ERA in 15 starts as a junior for UConn in 2017, with 116 strikeouts and 40 walks in 89⅓ innings.
Montgomerie was ranked No. 163 overall in our David Hood’s top 200 draft prospects, was ranked No. 249 in the Baseball America top 500, but was not ranked in the MLB Pipeline top 200.
Hood had the Dodgers taking Montgomerie in the seventh round in his mock draft on Monday.
Like many pitchers, the question is whether Montgomerie will be a starter or reliever as a professional.
Baseball America noted of Montgomerie, “The righthander has late life on his high-spin fastball and generates tons of swings and misses, even against good American Athletic Conference hitters.”
