The Dodgers took Louisville infielder Devin Mann with their fifth-round pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, No. 164 overall, their first position player picked so far in this draft.
Mann hit .303/.446/.504 with 17 doubles, seven home runs and four triples as a junior with Louisville, where he played mostly second base. The Dodgers when drafting Mann though listed him at shortstop.
Baseball America ranked Mann the 222nd prospect in the draft, though they weren’t high on his defensive tools, suggesting he might eventually have to move to left field. But BA did like Mann’s bat.
“He’s a disciplined hitter who works deep counts, controls the strike zone well and spoils pitcher’s pitches until he gets something he likes,” said Mann’s BA scouting report.
Mann was not ranked on David Hood’s top 200 draft prospects lists,
