Dodgers pick 29th in the first round of the MLB Draft

LA holds the last pick in the first round in 2020

MLB: JUN 09 First-Year Player Draft

The details of the 2020 MLB Draft are set, with baseball’s annual selection of domestic amateur talent scheduled for June 10-11, a five-round draft this year, down from the usual 40 rounds.

The first round of the draft will be held on June 10, with Rounds 2-5 one day later.

In the first round, the Dodgers hold the last pick at 29th overall, by virtue of winning 106 games. The Astros won 107 games, but their first-round pick, which would have slotted in 30th, just after the Dodgers, was forfeited, along with their second-round selection this year, as well as first- and second-round picks in 2021 because of Houston’s sign stealing during the 2017 regular season and postseason.

Draft order is determined by inverse order of record the previous year, with the Detroit Tigers and their 114 losses holding the No. 1 pick this year for the second time in three years. They took pitcher Casey Mize out of Auburn with the top selection in 2018.

If multiple teams had the same record, the prior year’s record is used. The Cubs and Red Sox both finished with 84 wins in 2019, but Chicago picks 16th because they were 95-68 in 2018 while the 108-54 Red Sox pick 17th.
