If there is one incontrovertible truth based on the first two major league starts of Ross Stripling, it's that the team that leads 2-0 when he leaves the game will not win that game. The Dodgers shook off the doldrums and rallied for five runs in the seventh inning, the decisive blow a two-run double by Kiké Hernandez in a 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks on Thursday night at Dodger Stadium.

Both teams struggled all series with runners in scoring position, and through four innings of scoreless baseball on Thursday, neither team had a hit with runners in scoring position during the three-game series. The Dodgers were 0-for-17, and the D-Backs were 0-for-11.

There is a classic quote by former legendary USC football coach John McKay, much later in his career when he led the hapless Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFL. When asked about his team's execution, McKay said, "I'm in favor of it."

It would be perfectly understandable if after leaving his second major league start Stripling might feel the same level of frustration. After all, he struck out five and walked one in six strong innings, allowing only two runs. He even got Paul Goldschmidt out three times, which qualifies as a success in anyone's book. But he had nothing to show for it, down 2-0.

Stripling, who left his major league debut last Friday with a no-hitter in 7⅓ innings, got that out of the way early on Thursday by allowing a single to Jean Segura to lead off the game.

The D-backs got off the RISP goose egg first, with a two-out single in the fifth by Nick Ahmed, who already proved to be a thorn in the Dodgers' side with home runs in each of the first two games of the series.

Arizona added another run in the sixth inning, this time not even needing a hit with runners in scoring position. Socrates Brito singled, stole second, then advanced twice on ground balls to give Arizona a two-run advantage.

That 2-0 lead loomed large because of the pitching of Robbie Ray, who struck out six and pitched into the seventh. But he also walked five, the last one by Austin Barnes to put both tying runs on base with one out in the seventh.

At this point the Dodgers were 0-for-2 on the night with RISP and 0-for-18 in the series, but the salve would come in the form of relief pitchers Randall Delgado and Andrew Chafin. The Dodgers got four straight hits — a single by pinch-hitter Justin Turner, a double by Hernandez — to take the lead, then singles by Yasiel Puig and Adrian Gonzalez to tack on some runs, and just like that the Dodgers were in command.

Kenley Jansen, one night after the first five-out save of his career, retired Arizona in order in the ninth for his fourth save. The Dodgers bullpen retired nine of 10 batters they faced, including a scoreless seventh by J.P. Howell for the win.

Up next

The 6-4 Dodgers welcome the 6-4 Giants to town for three games, beginning with an ace-off on Friday night with Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner.

The Dodgers look to take their series against the Diamondbacks with Thursday's series finale, and will do so without Justin Turner at third base after he was hit by two pitches on Wednesday night.

The second hit by pitch struck Turner on his left hand, and X-rays were negative, though manager Dave Roberts strongly hinted after the game that Turner may sit on Thursday.

Howie Kendrick starts at third base, his first game at the position since July 23, 2006. Kendrick did see some time at third base during spring training, some in workouts and some in game action though since Kendrick was hurt most of spring his game time was limited.

This is the third different position in three days for Kendrick, who started at second base on Tuesday and left field in Wednesday.

Against the left-hander Robbie Ray for Arizona, Chase Utley sits as well, with Austin Barnes getting the start at second base. Joc Pederson also sits, with Trayce Thompson starting in center field.

At least one Dodger approves of Thursday's lineup.

Hitless wonder

Ross Stripling enters Thursday still with a zero in his "hits allowed" column. Outside of Bumpus Jones, who began his career with at least nine innings without a hit, the only other pitchers I could find to at least match Stripling's 7⅓ innings are all relievers — Joel McKeon (8⅔ innings in 1986 with the White Sox), Jose Santiago (8⅓ innings in 1954-55 with the Indians) and Jonathan Sanchez (7⅓ innings in 2006 with the Giants).

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers have preached patience with their struggling bullpen, but that didn't stop them from making a minor move on Thursday, placing Chris Hatcher on the paternity list and recalling Adam Liberatore from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Hatcher's wife Jenny gave birth to their first child, Jensen Thomas Hatcher earlier Thursday.

Welcome to the world,
Jensen Thomas Hatcher 7 lb 5 oz, 20", 1:04 pm. Mom and baby are doing great. pic.twitter.com/cRMukv8e5p

Per MLB rules, a paternity list stay is a minimum of one day and a maximum of three days. It comes at a convenient time for Hatcher, who allowed his second home run in four game on Tuesday, the go-ahead run in the home opener loss to the Diamondbacks.

Hatcher said his 3-0 pitch to Paul Goldschmidt - the home run pitch - did not end up where he wanted it.

"You just have to make better pitches, and right now I'm not making very good pitches," he said. "The ball isn't going where I want it, and I'm trying to figure out why."

Liberatore pitched four scoreless, hitless innings in three games for Oklahoma City, with eight strikeouts and two walks. This is following a strong spring that saw Liberatore strike out 11 and walk none.

Not only does this give the Dodgers a second left-hander in the bullpen but also means for the moment Liberatore has jumped the struggling Luis Avilan on the depth chart.

Liberatore last pitched on Tuesday, throwing 33 pitches in two scoreless frames.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers are finally home after a week on the road, and on Tuesday will be the final team in baseball to play its home opener. The Diamondbacks are in town, the third National League West opponent in three series for the Dodgers, and here is a look at the pitching matchups for the three-game series.

Tuesday, 1:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

No pitcher, at least dating back to 1913, has ever homered in each of his first two games, so Kenta Maeda has something to shoot for. No Dodger during that same time period, at any position, has done so. Patrick Corbin is 3-4 with a 4.09 ERA in nine career games against the Dodgers, including eight starts, with 26 strikeouts and 15 walks in 44 innings.

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Alex Wood since joining the Dodgers has a 2.41 ERA in five starts at Dodger Stadium, with 25 strikeouts and five walks in 33⅔ innings. On the road that dips to 6.26 in eight starts, with 27 strikeouts and 20 walks in 41⅔ innings. The Dodgers bludgeoned old friend Rubby De La Rosa in 2015, to the tune of .350/.388/.663 in four starts, including seven home runs, 22 runs and 28 hits in 17⅔ innings.

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Before Ross Stripling, the last major league starting pitcher to not allow a hit in his major league debut was Steve Adkins, on Sept. 12, 1990 for the Yankees. Adkins only lasted 1⅓ innings though, thanks in part to eight walks. Adkins' big league career lasted all of five starts, with 29 walks in 24 innings. Arizona's pitching staff is much-improved, but through seven games the only quality start came from Robbie Ray, who allowed two runs in six innings in his lone start of the year. But even that came with the caveat of more walks (four) than strikeouts (three).
