A wild night in a bad week looked to go the Dodgers' way, but instead their series opener in San Diego ended with a devastating result. Melvin Upton Jr. hit a two-run home run to right center field in the ninth inning off closer Kenley Jansen, giving the Padres a 7-6, walk-off win over the Dodgers at Petco Park.

It was the first blown save of the season for Jansen, who had allowed just one run in 17 appearances entering Friday, including seven scoreless appearances in May. The final frame opened with Wil Myers lofting a fly ball single to short center field just beyond the reach of a stumbling Chase Utley.

Jansen had converted 25 consecutive save opportunities before Friday's loss. His last blown save was Aug. 23, 2015 at Houston.

The loss dropped the Dodgers (21-22) below .500 for the first time since May 6, and snapped the club's six-game winning streak at Petco Park.

Nearly the hero

Justin Turner had just one home run in his first 157 plate appearances this season, off to his slowest start by far as a Dodger. But after pinch-hitter Carl Crawford singled up the middle with two outs in the eighth inning with the Dodgers down 5-4, Turner got ahead 2-0 on Brandon Maurer.

"With two balls, no strikes, down by a run and two out, Justin is looking to cheat on this on a little bit," Dodgers broadcaster Orel Hershiser said on SportsNet LA just before the fateful pitch.

Turner lined a ball down the right field line and into the jury box that extends out just to the left of the foul pole, giving the Dodgers a one-run advantage.

San Diego got a two-out ground rule double against Pedro Baez in the eighth, but Jansen struck out Derek Norris to end the inning. Jansen was trying for his third save of at least four outs this season, but he did not record an out in the ninth.

The wild side

Scott Kazmir mixed in the usual, allowing a pair of home runs on Friday night, something we are certainly used to, with 12 home runs in nine starts this season.

But he added wildness on Friday, too, setting a new career high with seven free passes in his 5⅔ innings. One of the walks was intentional — we'll get to that later — but even six unintentional walks is an exorbitant amount. It matches Kazmir's previous career high, something he did six other times, the last on Sept. 3, 2010.

Kazmir only had 12 unintentional walks in eight starts all season entering Friday night. He also hit a batter, so something was amiss.

The home runs came on a solo shot by Derek Norris in the fifth and a two-run shot by Christian Bethancourt — the career catcher who nearly started in right field on Friday night — pinch hitting in the sixth, the latter turning a 4-3 Dodgers lead into a one-run Padres advantage.

Bad strategy

Kazmir walked and hit a batter in the second inning, then after a passed ball both runners moved into scoring position. He whiffed Jose Pirela for the second out of the inning, but then Dave Roberts opted to intentionally walk Adam Rosales to get to the pitcher, Christian Friedrich. a Rosales entered Friday hitting .169/.247/.299 in 2016 and .223/.291/.339, the very type of hitter who should be attacked to get out of such a jam, leaving the lowly pitcher — Friedrich was 3-for-35 (.086) in his career with 18 strikeouts and three walks — as an easy out to leadoff the next inning.

The move backfired when Friedrich singled back up the middle for two runs, but that's not necessarily why it was a bad move. Taking a glance at the FanGraphs game log, the Dodgers win expectancy when Rosales came to the plate was 43.9 percent. With the intentional walk, that dropped to 42.4 percent.

Notes

Yasiel Puig showed some signs of coming out of his slump. Hitting .213/.226/.328 in May entering Friday night, he singled in the fourth inning then scored from first on what was basically a glorified single turned into a hustle double by Yasmani Grandal. Puig then homered in the fifth to give the Dodgers a 4-2 lead, and most importantly he drove the ball to right center, usually a harbinger of good things to come for Puig.

Kiké Hernandez doubled in the third inning against Friedrich, snapping an 0-for-23 skid Hernandez had against southpaws. It was his first extra-base hit since hitting two home runs and a double against Madison Bumgarner on April 15, also Hernandez's last hits against a lefty.

Corey Seager doubled home Hernandez in the third, the team-leading 12th double of the year for Seager, who has an 11-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .370 (17-for-46) with five home runs and four doubles. Seager, who made his major league debut in San Diego last September, is hitting .333 (11-for-33) in eight career games at Petco Park, with five doubles.

Kazmir was the first Dodgers pitcher to walk seven batters in a game since Zack Greinke on July 3, 2013.

Adrian Gonzalez entered the game on a double switch in the eighth inning and batted in the ninth, and flew out. It was his first game played since Monday, when he left with lower back tightness. He is expected to start at first base on Saturday.

Up next

The Dodgers turn to another lefty on Saturday night, with Alex Wood on the mound in the middle game of the series, at a more normal 7:10 p.m. PT start time. The Padres will send Cesar Vargas to the mound, making his sixth major league start.

The Dodgers on Friday night face Christian Friedrich, the first left-handed starter they have faced in 11 games, and accordingly have loaded up on right-handed batters in their series opener against the Padres at Petco Park. Corey Seager is the only left-handed position player starting for Los Angeles on Friday.

The last time the Dodgers faced a southpaw starter was May 9 when Steven Matz of the Mets toed the rubber at Dodger Stadium, the only lefty starter the Dodgers have faced in their last 14 games.

Adrian Gonzalez is out of the lineup as expected for a fourth straight game on Friday night, still dealing with back tightness. Yasmani Grandal gets the start at first base, his second of the year at the position.

A.J. Ellis starts at catcher, his 10th start in 11 games facing left-handed starters this season. The only time Ellis didn't start against a southpaw this season was May 4 in Tampa Bay, but that was the third straight game the Dodgers faced a left-handed starter, so Grandal got the call instead.

Kiké Hernandez gets the call in left field. He's hitting .242/.359/.485 against left-handed pitching this season, but that includs a current slump of 0-for-22 against southpaws. In May, Hernandez is 1-for-24 overall with a walk.

Joc Pederson sits in center field, the 10th time in 11 games he has done so against southpaws. In the one game he did start against a lefty, on May 3 in Tampa Bay, Pederson homered off of Matt Moore. Trayce Thompson gets the call in center for the Dodgers.

The Dodgers are 5-5 in games against left-handed starters this season.

Matt Kemp is out of the Padres lineup after starting 41 of San Diego's 42 games, including each of the last 32 games. Instead, Christian Bethancourt was originally slated to get the call in right field on Friday, the first time in nine seasons as a professional he would have played anywhere but catcher. But he was scratched from the lineup, which now features Jose Pirela in right field, batting seventh.

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers right-handed pitcher Frankie Montas will begin a minor league rehab assignment with Double-A Tulsa on Saturday, the team announced on Friday.

Montas had rib resection surgery on Feb. 12, with an estimated recovery time of 2-4 months. His return time will end up on the high end of that diagnosis, as the right-hander is ineligible to be activated from the 60-day disabled list until June 2.

Montas pitched two innings in an extended spring training game at Camelback Ranch in Arizona on Thursday.

The 23-year-old right-hander, who has averaged 96.92 mph on his fastball per Brooks Baseball, could potentially help the Dodgers bullpen, and quickly. Though it remains to be seen if the Dodgers plan to continue to try to stretch Montas out as a starter, as was the plan in spring training.

The Dodgers acquired Montas from the White Sox on Dec. 17, 2015 in the three-team Todd Frazier trade with the Reds.

"Our scouts feel his fastball/slider combo is one of the best in the minor leagues," Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said after the trade. "There's no question in my mind he could step into a major league bullpen right now. But we're more of the mind to develop him as a starting pitcher."

After losing two straight games and four of their last five, the Dodgers try to get back on track against the Padres in what has been a much friendlier visitor spot in recent years at Petco Park in San Diego.

The Dodgers have beaten the Padres six straight times in San Diego, dating back to 2015, and have won four straight series at Petco Park. Since the start of 2011 the Dodgers are 13-1-2 in series in San Diego, going 33-17 in games during that span.

The hospitality reached its peak in April when the Dodgers won the first three games of the season, outscoring the Padres 25-0 in the process.

The Dodgers have never shut out the Padres four straight times on the road. In fact, the only opponent the Dodgers have shut out for four straight road games, dating back to 1913, is the Cardinals, from Sept. 18, 1965 to June 2, 1966. The starting pitchers in those games for the Dodgers in St. Louis were Sandy Koufax (complete game), Claude Osteen (eight innings), Koufax again (complete game) and a rookie named Don Sutton (6⅔ innings).

Ron Perranoski was the only Dodgers reliever used in the two non-Koufax starts, earning a pair of saves.

Scott Kazmir started the middle game of the opening series, and retired 18 of his 19 batters faced in six scoreless innings on April 5, allowing only a first-inning single.

Kazmir is coming off an 8⅔-inning start last Saturday against St. Louis, throwing 120 pitches for the first time in nearly 10 years. The reason it wasn't a complete game win for Kazmir was a two-out home run by Jeremy Hazelbaker in the ninth inning, the 10th home run allowed by Kazmir in eight starts in 2016, tied for fifth-most in the majors.

The Padres have hit 36 home runs on the season, tied for 27th in baseball (note: the Dodgers aren't much better with 39 home runs, but they are tied for 19th, with several teams bunched within a few homers of each other). San Diego has hit 15 of those home runs in 22 games at Petco Park, where the Friars are hitting .215/.269/.326 and averaging 2.68 runs per game.

The Dodgers limp down to San Diego for a weekend series at Petco Park, in what seems like a lifetime since the last time they were there and outscored the Padres 25-0 in the season-opening series. Here is a look at the probable starting pitching matchups for the weekend.

Friday, 7:40 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Scott Kazmir is coming off his longest outing in two years, lasting 8⅔ innings against the Cardinals on Saturday. His last four starts have been an improvement over his first four, going from a 6.63 ERA ad 15 strikeouts in 19 innings to 3.67 with 28 strikeouts and just seven walks in 27 innings. He pitched six scoreless innings in his Dodgers debut on April 5 at Petco Park, retiring the final 17 batters he faced.

Former Rockies left-hander Christian Friedrich made his Padres debut last Friday in Milwaukee, taking a hard-luck 1-0 loss despite allowing just one run in six innings, though he did walk more (six) than he struck out (four). One of the walks was intentional. He is holding the rotation spot of Andrew Cashner, who is on the disabled list with a strained hamstring.

Saturday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

You can't swing a dead cat without someone bringing up home and road splits when it comes to Alex Wood. I have been guilty of it myself numerous times. Since joining the Dodgers last July 30, Wood is 9-for-9 in quality starts at home with a 1.95 ERA at Dodger Stadium, compared to a 6.79 ERA and one quality start in 11 outings on the road. But his one shining beacon of gray uniform success came in San Diego, with seven scoreless innings at Petco Park last Sept. 5.

Cesar Vargas has a 3.55 ERA in his first five major league starts, but has also lasted six innings just once in five tries. He pitched 5⅓ scoreless innings in a no-decision at Dodger Stadium on Apr. 29, a game San Diego eventually won 5-1.

Sunday, 1:40 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

After allowing a single run in his first four major league starts, Kenta Maeda has allowed a crooked number of runs in an inning once in each of his last four starts, including at least three runs in an inning three times. Since hitting a home run in his second major league at-bat on April 6 at Petco Park, Maeda is 1-for-12 with three strikeouts.

Colin Rea will start Sunday on four days rest. In three starts on regular four days rest in 2016, the right-hander has a 1.80 ERA with 13 strikeouts and five walks in 20 innings.
