Julio Urias is still very rough around the edges, but he's beginning to close the gap between his time as a minor league phenom and his future as a major league starter. Urias was electric in his third major league start, striking out seven in the Dodgers' 4-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The growing pains are still there of course, with Urias needing 86 pitches to get through his four innings, thanks in part to Colorado hitters fouling off 19 pitches against him.

"He's getting ahead of hitters, but the ability to get that empty swing, there are some foul balls, there are borderline calls that don't go his way. Major league hitters can wait you out on counts," manager Dave Roberts said after the game, as seen on SportsNet LA. "He's got to get to the point where he can get ahead of hitters and wipe them out."

But the stuff is still there too, with Urias striking out a career-high seven, the first Dodgers teenage starting pitcher to do so since Don Drysdale struck out nine for Brooklyn on April 23, 1956.

The crowd, including Urias' mother and father and several family members, was buzzing from the first pitch, and Urias obliged by ending each of the first three innings with a strikeout. He struck out Carlos Gonzalez and Trevor Story twice each, and only walked one on the night.

"I felt like another dream was completed [pitching at Dodger Stadium]," Urias said through an interpreter, as seen on SportsNet LA.

Tuesday was also the first time Urias pitched with a lead, thanks to capitalizing on wildness in the first inning by Rockies starter Eddie Butler, who walked the first two batters then allowed a three-run home run to Justin Turner.

Colorado scored against Urias in the third inning when DJ LeMahieu singled, stole second, then scored on a double by Nolan Arenado to the wall in left, where Howie Kendrick looked every bit the second baseman playing out of position. But that was it, just the one run on three hits in Urias' four innings, his best major league start to date.

The seven strikeouts by Urias were tied for fifth-most by a Dodger in a start of four or fewer innings. Hideo Nomo holds the mark with nine, while Johnny Podres, Ismael Valdes and Ted Lilly all struck out eight in a shortened start.

The Dodgers as a team struck out 15 on the night and lead the National League with 552 strikeouts on the season, three more than the Nationals, though Washington has played two fewer games.

Up next

The Dodgers go for the series win and a potential 5-1 homestand in Wednesday night's series finale, a 7:10 p.m. PT start. Kenta Maeda gets the start for the Dodgers, with left-hander Chris Rusin starting for the Rockies.

As for Urias, Roberts said the left-hander earned another start in the rotation, which will come Monday in Arizona, likely against old friend Zack Greinke.

"There's still a lot in there obviously," Roberts said. "After three starts, we're excited for his next start."

Roberts also said Mike Bolsinger will start Sunday night in San Francisco.

Trayce Thompson hit a two-out walk-off home run in the ninth inning against Carlos Estevez to break a tie and give the Dodgers a 4-3 win over the Rockies on Tuesday night at Dodger Stadium.

The winning rally wrote a different ending to a familiar script for the Dodgers, who got their second walk-off victory of the season, and first since May 10 against New York. That was also a home run by Thompson, who has 10 on the season, second-most on the team.

The home run was the Dodgers' first hit since the second inning.

Stop me if you have heard this before, but the Dodgers scored early, then didn't do much else the rest of the game. Chase Utley walked on six pitches, then Corey Seager did the same, followed by Eddie Butler falling behind 2-0 to Justin Turner.

Turner made Butler pay, smashing the ball 408 feet into the pavilion in left center field for his first home run since May 22, and fourth of the season. Including the three-run shot, Turner is 9-for-14 (.643) with two doubles, two walks and a hit by pitch in his career against Butler.

The Dodgers have scored 35 runs in the first inning this season, their most prolific offensive frame. They have outscored opponents by 15 runs in the first inning on the season, second only to the ninth inning, where they have ouscored opponents by 17 (27-10).

The Dodgers offense, as they are wont to do, did not score again against Butler, who got through six innings, striking out four on the night.

Julio Urias struck out seven in his first home start, but needed 86 pitches to do so and was done after four innings, leaving with a 3-1 lead. Then the Rockies chipped away.

The lead was in peril in the fifth inning, when the Rockies loaded the bases against reliever Louis Coleman with only one out, and Nolan Arenado and Carlos Gonzalez due up. But Coleman was able to induce an infield pop out from Arenado, then southpaw Adam Liberatore entered to strike out Gonzalez to leave the bases loaded.

Liberatore has stranded 14 of 18 inherited runners this season.

Joe Blanton pitched a scoreless sixth inning, then started the seventh by allowing a pinch-hit home run to Daniel Descalso of all people, his first home run of the year. A one-out single to Ryan Raburn seemed harmless when Seager made a great over-the-shoulder catch in short left field for the second out of the inning, but somehow his throw back to first base got past Adrian Gonzalez, Blanton and catcher Yasmani Grandal and into the dugout for a two-base error.

Gonzalez, who struck out his previous three times up, faced Pedro Baez, who was brought in instead of southpaw J.P. Howell. Gonzalez rifled a 107-mph ground ball off the glove of Utley at second base for a single, scoring Raburn from third with the tying run.

Kenley Jansen allowed a leadoff walk for his second straight appearance, but he pitched a scoreless ninth for the win, getting Arenado to pop out and struck out Gonzalez to end the inning.

The Dodgers moved to three games out in the National League West, the closest they have been in the division since May 18.

Dodgers pitcher Julio Urias adds to the history books on Tuesday night making his home debut in the middle game of a three-game series against the Rockies, and the first teenage pitcher at Dodger Stadium in 32 years.

Urias, at 19 years, 200 days old on Tuesday will be the first teenage pitcher at Dodger Stadium since Dwight Gooden on May 11, 1984. Dr. K in his rookie season shut out the Dodgers with 11 strikeouts in that affair, just starting to take the sport by storm.

Urias is the first Dodgers teenage pitcher since Fernando Valenzuela in September 1980. Valenzuela pitched 11⅔ scoreless innings in six relief appearances at Dodger Stadium in his first cup of coffee, and overall that first month had a 0.00 ERA in 17⅔ innings in relief, allowing only two unearned runs.

The last Dodgers teenage starter at Dodger Stadium was Dick Calmus on Aug. 23, 1963. There have been many visting teenage starters in between at Chavez Ravine, including Don Gullett, Gary Nolan, Larry Dierker, Catfish Hunter and Jim Palmer, the latter two in the few years the Angels played their home games at Dodger Stadium.

But it's not about Urias necessarily matching these legends, not when on a limit of roughly six innings and 90 pitches, something he hasn't yet reached in the majors. It's about the left-hander continuing to improve, and hopefully this time keep the Dodgers in the game.

He showed improvement in his last start, as weird as it sounds to describe a start in which he allowed three home runs and six runs. He had no command in his first start against the Mets, throwing four first-pitch strikes in 17 batters faced in New York, needing 81 pitches to last just 2⅔ innings. But against the Cubs he lasted five innings, throwing two fewer pitches, and threw a first-pitch strike to 19 of 23 batters. That's a start.

Perhaps Urias can get some run support against Rockies starter Eddie Butler, who isn't Tyler Chatwood. Butler has allowed 12 runs in nine innings in his last two starts, so he's looking to rebound like his mound counterpart as well.

The Dodgers try to extend their seven-game home winning streak when they welcome the Rockies to town for three games to complete the homestand. Here is a look at the schedule for the series, beginning Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

Monday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Since joining the Dodgers, Mike Bolsinger has a 3.26 ERA in 10 starts at Dodger Stadium, with 54 strikeouts and 19 walks in 58 innings.

Tyler Chatwood has been everything the Rockies have asked for and more, averaging over six innings per start with a 2.99 ERA, 44 strikeouts and 19 walks in his 69⅓ innings. On the road he has been even better, allowing three runs in five stats, with a 0.53 ERA, 23 strikeouts and seven walks.

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

All eyes will be on Julio Urias for his home debut. At 19 years, 291 days old will be he first teenage pitcher in a game at Dodger Stadium since Dwight Gooden, who struck out 11 in a 2-0 shutout win on May 11, 1984.

Eddie Butler has only struck out 10 of 79 batters (12.7 percent) on the road this season, but he still has a 2.66 road ERA this season compared to 9.37 at Coors Field. Butler has lasted six innings twice in six starts this season, and both came on the road.

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Kenta Maeda has allowed two runs in his last two starts, just one of them earned, and hasn't allowed a home run in four starts. He already faced the Rockies once this season, striking out eight while pitching scoreless baseball into the seventh inning on April 23. The Dodgers face a rare left-hander in the finale with Chris Rusin going for the Rockies. Rusin had a 1.69 ERA in April, but since then is 0-4 with a 6.06 ERA, with 67 percent of his innings during that span on the road.
