Manager Dave Roberts said this morning that Clayton Kershaw will start on Friday at Miami. He also said that rotation for the upcoming Arizona series will be Kenta Maeda, Ross Stripling and Brock Stewart

LOS ANGELES ----- Manager Dave Roberts said that Clayton Kershaw will return to the Dodgers' rotation on Friday when he makes the start against the Marlins at Miami.

"It's a big lift, everybody in the clubhouse is excited, anticipating Clayton's return," Roberts said, "for Clayton, to watch his teammates play for this length of time I know was killing him, so to be active again and to help us win a baseball game, I think that he is over the moon."

Kershaw made a rehab start last night at Rancho Cucamonga when he pitched three scoreless innings and struck out five. Kershaw made 34 pitches in his start and then threw 15 more in the bullpen.a

"[Kershaw] is coming off 50 pitches, 35 in a game, there really is no hard number," Roberts said, "I'm going to be aware of the usage, as big as a start as it is, to get him back, I think the bigger picture is also going forward and managing it. Clayton is going to want to go as far as he can go but that's definitely my job to manage that."

Roberts said the rotation will be Kenta Maeda, Ross Stripling and Brock Stewart for the upcoming series against Diamondbacks.

Roberts gave updates on upcoming rehab appearances for Brandon McCarthy and Scott Kazmir. McCarthy will pitch on Monday September 5th for the Quakes at Rancho Cucamonga.

Scott Kazmir will start for the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Wednesday September 7th at Oklahoma City. That will be Game 1 of the Dodgers first round playoff series against the Nashville Sounds (Athletics).

"[Kazmir] is going to be [six innings and 90 pitches] and at that point and time, if it goes well as we expect," Roberts said, "then we will see him in one of those games against the Yankees."

Brett Anderson also made a rehab appearance at Rancho Cucamonga on last night, he pitched two innings and allowed six runs and nine hits. Roberts said that his blister continues to be an issue.

"Brett had a little bit of an issue with a blister resurfacing, Roberts said, "we got to re-assess with the medical staff about what we are going to do next with Brett."

Corey Seager is getting a day off with a day game following a night game. Austin Barnes is starting at catcher because he and today's starting pitcher, Jose De Leon, worked together in minors, most recently at Oklahoma City.

RANCHO CUCAMONGA --- Clayton Kershaw returned to action on Saturday night at LoanMart Field and the best description might be he looked a lot like Clayton Kershaw.

After the game, Kershaw said that if all goes well, his next game will be in his Dodger uniform.

"Think I'm pitching in four days,or five days, Kershaw said, "I think that we're still trying to ironing some stuff out but I think it is more of a pitch count deal."

Kershaw knows with the expanded roster, there are more arms in the bullpen as he builds up his pitch count.

[I'm] making sure that I can contribute," Kershaw said, "not just kind of go out there, it helps that it is September, we have a lot of guys up in the bullpen.

"We're still working the kinks out but we'll see."

Clayton Kershaw talks about his rehab start

Kershaw retired the first seven batters in a row on five strikeouts and two groundouts. Modesto's Robbie Perkins will remember he singled off Kershaw, actually it was a little dribbler in front of the plate and the catcher Will Smith tried to make a play and threw it wide.

Kershaw rebounded from that play to induce a double play, shortstop to second to first. With that, Kershaw's line was three innings, one hit, five strikeouts on 34 pitches.

After the game, Kershaw said he felt good and was glad to be pitching in a game.

"Felt good, was able to warm up and sit in between innings and everything, stuff that had kind of bothered me in the past," Kershaw said, "it's fun to kind of pitch in a game setting again, kind of have a normal game type situations, definitely fun to be out there again."

The key will be how Kershaw feels tonight and over the next few days but he remains hopeful.

"Feels good right now and hopefully it stays this way through the night," Kershaw said, "the last few times when I've pitched at times it is after, so once I cool down, kind of sit for a little bit, it will stiffen up, so as long as I am okay doing that tonight, it will be a good test and should be good to go for my next one.

Kershaw threw all of his pitches and he thought given his time off, he will take tonight's outing.

"Fastball and slider were pretty decent, curveball needed a little work," said Kershaw, "wasn't there at times, I threw a couple of good ones but a few of them got away from me."

"I guess for as much time as I missed, I'll take it," said Kershaw, "but you know, once you get up and pitch in real games in the major leagues, there's not going to be so much forgiveness, definitely need to be more consistent."

The Nuts (Rockies) defeated the Quakes 7-3

After Kershaw was done, Dodger left-handed pitcher Brett Anderson made his first rehab appearance since he was put on disabled list on August 23rd with a blister.

Anderson pitched two innings, he gave up six runs and nine hits. Michael Boyle finished the game with four innings and one run allowed.

Trailing 6-0 at one point, Rancho scored three runs to try and come back, two of the runs were on solo home runs by Yusniel Diaz and Devan Ahart.

The Nuts would score their final run on Josh Fuentes solo home run, Fuentes also had a double and a triple to fall short of the cycle by a single.

Kershaw starts on Saturday for Quakes

The return of Clayton Kershaw to the Dodgers will take one necessary step forward this weekend, with the ace left-hander making a minor league rehab start with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, team president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said on Thursday night.

Friedman made the announcement to a crowd at Dodger Stadium on the club’s off day, during a “Dodgers All-Access” event through the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation and the LA Sports & Entertainment Commission. This matched what Friedman told reporters in Colorado on Tuesday.

Kershaw last pitched on Tuesday, facing hitters for the first time in his current comeback incarnation, after a series of bullpen sessions. A start on Saturday or Sunday could put Kershaw in line for a return to the majors next weekend when the Dodgers face the Marlins in Miami.

UPDATE: manager Dave Roberts clarified on Friday:

Rancho Cucamonga concludes their regular season with a four-game series at home against Modesto from Friday to Monday.

Kershaw’s only other minor league time since 2008 came in 2014, the only other time Kershaw was on the disabled list, when he made a pair of five-inning rehab starts, one for Rancho Cucamonga and another for Double-A Chattanooga.

Sunday will mark 10 weeks since Kershaw last pitched, out with a mild disc herniation in his back.

The Dodgers have performed admirably since Kershaw last pitched, on June 26, going 33-23 (.589) and gaining 10 games in the National League West, from eight games behind the Giants to now two games ahead of San Francisco in the division.

Dodgers starting pitchers in the 56 games since Kershaw last pitched have a 4.89 ERA and have averaged 4.87 innings per start.

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw will take the next step in his road back to resuming his season on Tuesday when he faces hitters in a simulated game. After a 60-pitch bullpen Friday, the Dodgers' ace was optimistic about how his rehab is going."

"It wasn’t a very good bullpen," Kershaw told reporters Friday’s series opener against the Chicago Cubs. "But physically I feel fine."

This will be the second attempt to throw to hitters in a simulated game since Kershaw was placed on the disabled list July 1. The first attempt didn't go as planned when Kershaw's back didn't respond well to the workload. The team and their lefty believe his back is in better health now after a month of rest.

The team also announced that Scott Van Slyke will have season-ending surgery on his right wrist this Thursday. Van Slyke was originally placed on the 15-day DL August 9 and had been transferred to the 60-day DL Thursday to make room for catcher Shawn Zarraga.

Jason Hammel will be on the mound for the Cubs Saturday. The Dodgers faced the right-hander at Wrigley Field May 30 but Hammel was removed with leg cramps after two scoreless innings.

Hammel has a 5-5 record and 4.41 on the road and is a career 0-4 with a 4.91 ERA in 8 games (5 Starts) at Dodger Stadium.

Chase Utley is the only Dodger in the lineup that has had much success against Hammel, going 5-for-10 with a triple, homer and three RBI in 14 plate appearances.

The Dodgers will send Julio Urias to the mound for his 12th career start. After giving up 8 runs over 7.2 IP in his first two starts, the 20-year-old has allowed only 14 earned runs in nine starts since and has won his last three decisions.

Three of the five homers Urias has allowed this year came in his second career start which came against the Cubs back on June 2. Javier Baez, Jason Heyward and Kris Bryant all went deep in that game. Baez and Bryant are in the lineup for the Cubs.

Kershaw will need one minor league rehab game before activation

LOS ANGELES — Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw took another step closer to returning to the team before Tuesday’s game against the Giants, throwing two simulated innings in a bullpen session at Dodger Stadium.

He threw an estimated 41 pitches to catcher A.J. Ellis, going through mock game situations, with a rest period between simulated innings.

"That was the hard part for me before. Sitting down in between innings, it wasn't very comfortable to sit,” Kershaw said. “It was a positive step, sitting between innings and not even thinking about it.”

Kershaw last pitched for the Dodgers on July 26, and has been sidelined with a mild disc herniation in his back. He threw a four-inning simulated game on July 16 at Dodger Stadium, but was shut down after feeling discomfort. This time around, Kershaw for the moment is pain free.

"Today was a good day for us,” manager Dave Roberts said.

The next step will be a few days of rest for Kershaw before taking the next step, whether it is another glorified bullpen session or actually facing hitters. Kershaw has a clear preference.

"I think it's time to see some hitters, and make sure I can still get some guys out,” Kershaw said. "I'm optimistic [of a September return], but I need to face hitters to know. I need to know that with the added intensity that I'll come out of it okay.”

Kershaw will eventually need a rehab start before being activated from the disabled list. That’s a singular start.

"We talked about potentially two games, but that became one,” Roberts said, smiling. “He's obviously the aggressor, and that's what makes him great.”

The Dodgers could really use Clayton Kershaw as the season winds to a close. The left-hander threw a light bullpen session Saturday of around 25 pitches and talked with reporters afterwards.

Kershaw sounded optimistic of where he is at in the process without offering substantial information on what that means for when he'll be back.

"I felt good," said Kershaw. "Until you face hitters, you don't really know for sure. I feel 100 percent right now, so that's a good sign."

It's unlikely that Kershaw returns from the 60-day DL as soon as he is eligible on August 27, unless he somehow avoids a minor league rehab stint. After being on the shelf for two months, a game or two in the minors is realistic.

Kershaw is on the 60-day disabled list, and the earliest he can be activated from the DL is Aug. 27. It is unknown what Kershaw’s exact timetable is, but this is at least a step in the right direction toward a regular season return.

While Kershaw won’t start anytime soon for the Dodgers, they will have Julio Urias start on Monday night against the Phillies, a selection that was pretty obvious once Jose De Leon made his scheduled start on Saturday night for Oklahoma City. There simply aren’t many healthy options at this point.

Urias pitched three innings of relief on Wednesday at Coors Field, putting him on regular rest for the series opener against Philadelphia. Monday will be the final start for Urias as a teenager. He turns 20 on Friday.
