Bud Norris was great in his debut with his new team, and the Dodgers offense tacked on some insurance runs late in a 5-0 win over the Rockies on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

It was the seventh straight home win for the Dodgers, who have won 15 of their last 18 games at Dodger Stadium.

The win was the Dodgers' ninth shutout of the season, matching Philadelphia for most in the National League.

Norris kept the Rockies off balance and, for most of the night, off base. He allowed a single, a double, a walk and hit a batter in his six innings. Only in the second did two of those group together, with two runners reaching with two outs. But Norris was able to escape by striking out Brandon Barnes swinging.

Norris matched his season high of eight strikeouts, the same total he had in his last start with Atlanta, on Sunday against the Mets. He went seven scoreless innings on Sunday, then six scoreless innings on Friday night with his new team.

Barnes nearly got Norris for a home run to center field, but his 391-foot drive died just in front of the wall, or as Vin Scully described on the SportsNet LA broadcast, "a paint-scraper for an out."

Chase Utley, making his first start against a left-handed pitcher in 2016, walked against Jorge De La Rosa in the fourth inning, then went to third on a single by Corey Seager, who extended his hitting streak to 14 games, and later added another single.

Adrian Gonzalez followed with an RBI single to right field for a 1-0 lead.

That was pretty much it against De La Rosa until the seventh inning, when Howie Kendrick and Yasiel Puig singled to open the inning, then each advanced on a passed ball by Nick Hundley. A balk by De La Rosa brought Kendrick home for a second run. The Dodgers tried to add another run with a fly ball to left field by Trayce Thompson, but Barnes unleashed a strong throw to home plate to nail Puig.

The Dodgers put the game away in the eighth inning with three runs, including an another RBI single by Gonzalez. His two RBI on Friday matched his total for his previous 14 home games. Justin Turner and Howie Kendrick both doubled in the inning, Kendrick's second hit of the night.

Up next

Scott Kazmir takes the mound for the Dodgers on Saturday night, a 7:10 p.m. PT game that will take place after the Old Timer's Game. The Rockies will go with right-hander Chad Bettis in the middle game of the series.

Friday particulars

Home runs: none

WP - Bud Norris (4-7): 6 IP, 2 hits, 1 walk, 8 strikeouts

LP - Jorge De La Rosa (5-5): 7 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 4 walks, 4 strikeouts

A little more than 14 months after last appearing in a major league game, pitcher Brandon McCarthy will start for the Dodgers on Sunday against the Rockies, completing his return from Tommy John surgery, manager Dave Roberts told reporters on Friday.

McCarthy threw 72 pitches in five innings on Monday night for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga, his fourth minor league rehab start. His last major league game was April 25, 2015.

Slotting in McCarthy on Sunday works in two ways. For one, he is on five days rest after his Monday start. But it also gives Julio Urias an extra day of rest after throwing 100 pitches for the first time in his professional career in his six-inning win on Tuesday in Milwaukee.

The Dodgers will need to make a corresponding move to add McCarthy back to the 40-man roster since he is currently on the 60-day disabled list.

Hyun-jin Ryu could soon follow McCarthy on the comeback trail. Ryu will make one more rehab start on Friday night for Rancho Cucamonga, expected to pitch five or six innings tonight after seeing his Tuesday rehab start with Triple-A Oklahoma City cut short by rain.

LOS ANGELES -- The Dodgers placed outfielder Joc Pederson on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right AC joint before their weekend series against the Rockies on Friday night, three days after he injured his shoulder crashing into the center field wall at Miller Park in Milwaukee.

Will Venable was promoted from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Pederson's place on the active roster. To make room on the 40-man roster, pitcher Layne Somsen was designated for assignment. The Dodgers claimed Somsen off waivers on June 22.

The Dodgers also placed Clayton Kershaw on the 15-day DL with mild disc herniation and activated new acquisition Bud Norris, who will start Friday night against the Rockies. Norris will wear No. 28 for the Dodgers.

Pederson left Tuesday night's game in Milwaukee after making a terrific catch of a drive by Chris Carter, but in doing so ran into the wall at full speed. Pederson laid on the ground for a few minutes before finally walking off the field on his own power, though he was keeping his right arm immobile against his body while walking to the clubhouse.

Initial X-rays were negative, showing no fracture, and the team said Pederson had a bruised shoulder and a sore AC joint.

This will sideline Pederson through at least the All-Star break.

Pederson has been one of the Dodgers' best all-around players this year, hitting .236/.328/.476 with 13 home runs and 16 doubles in 75 games at a premium defensive position in center field.

Venable appeared in six games for the Dodgers in June, including two starts, going 1-for-10 with a double and a run scored. The Dodgers signed Venable to a one-year contract on June 14. He was designated for assignment on June 24 and accepted an outright assignment to Triple-A Oklahoma City one day later.

Somsen appeared in one game for Triple-A Oklahoma City, pitching a scoreless inning with two walks and a strikeout.

LOS ANGELES -- The Bud Norris era begins on Friday night, with the new Dodgers acquisition starting in the opener of a three-game weekend series against the Rockies. It opens a 10-game homestand at Dodger Stadium, where the Dodgers have turned things around after an early-season malaise.

The Dodgers were 4-8 at home after dropping their first two games against the Padres to end April, ending the month with six consecutive home losses. But in the two months since the Dodgers are 19-7 at home, including wins in their last six straight games at Dodger Stadium.

Since May 1, the Dodgers have lost only one of eight home series (they also tied a four-game series against the Mets, and split two against the Angels), and that was against the Rockies, who won two of three games from June 6-8.

The Dodgers are just 16-15 against National League West foes this season, including 6-6 at home.

Colorado is 21-20 against the division in 2016, including 11-8 on the road.

Jorge De La Rosa and Bud Norris both started the year in the rotation, then saw time in the bullpen before returning to starting, and both are coming off strong Junes. De La Rosa added missed time, about four weeks on the disabled list with a left groin strain.

De La Rosa, in his ninth season with Colorado, has quality starts in his last two outings, and in June had a 1.96 ERA, with 19 strikeouts and nine walks in 23 innings.

Norris hasn't allowed more than three runs in a start since returning to the rotation, and in June put up a 2.08 ERA with 29 strikeouts and eight walks in 30⅓ innings.

The Dodgers are back home with the Rockies in town for a weekend of divisional play at Dodger Stadium. The rapidly-changing Dodgers rotation features a newcomer in the opener. Here is a look at the probable starting pitchers this weekend in Los Angeles.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Bud Norris makes his Dodgers debut, the 10th starting pitcher used by the team in 2016. Norris allowed just one run in five innings at Dodger Stadium on June 4, though he had more walks (four) than strikeouts (two). Since that start, Norris walked four total batters in four starts, with 27 strikeouts and a 2.22 ERA during that span.

Jorge De La Rosa has had a terrible year so far with a 6.47 ERA, but he has been much better of late. In his last four games, including three starts, De La Rosa is 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA in 22 innings. The left-hander is the Rockies all-time franchise leader in wins (83) and strikeouts (926). Friday will be his 186th start for Colorado, passing Jeff Francis for second place on the franchise list, 20 shy of leader Aaron Cook.

Saturday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Scott Kazmir has a 3.97 ERA in eight starts at home this season, with 51 strikeouts and 16 walks in 45⅓ innings Chad Bettis has a 5.84 ERA on the season, and has allowed nine home runs in nine road starts, compared to only three home runs in seven stars at Coors Field in 2016.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts after Thursday's game in Milwaukee would only commit to Norris and Kazmir in his weekend rotation, with Sunday still TBA. But unless the club makes another acquisition or calls someone up, this start will likely go to Julio Urias, though perhaps the issue is trying to find him extra rest after setting a professional high with 100 pitches thrown in six innings on Tuesday.

Jon Gray has had a solid rookie season in his own right, and the future ace has lasted seven innings in six of his last 10 starts. He has a 3.45 ERA in his last seven starts, with 44 strikeouts in 44⅓ innings, but he has also allowed at least one home run in each of those games, nine in all, after giving up only two long balls in his first six starts of the year.
