LOS ANGELES ---- Before today's game, manager Dave Roberts commented on how confident he was that Kenta Maeda would pitch a good game this afternoon. Roberts' faith was rewarded with Maeda's seven-inning, 13 strikeout performance.

The one pitch that stood out today for Dave Roberts and Kenta Maeda was the slider.

"The slider was sharp, was late, throwing his breaking ball over for strikes, the curveball,' said Roberts, "it was all about the slider today."

"Also, he was throwing some fastballs, elevating the fastball," Roberts said, "making them conscious of the fastball and having that slider that was so dominant was great to see."

Maeda also believed his slider worked well today.

"Overall I was able to command all of my pitches, said Kenta Maeda through his translator, "especially with the slider. I was able to manipulate it so it looked like a strike going in and it became a ball."

The Padres were the first team Maeda has faced three times and that went into today's game plan.

"I was able to throw against them knowing their strengths and weaknesses so that helped a lot."

Maeda's assessment of his first half was one of balancing the good and the bad sections of his season.

"I've been able to experience both the good stretch and the bad stretch," Maeda said, "so I think that overall, it was a productive half season."

Catcher Yasmani Grandal thought this was another good Maeda game with his ability to throw his curveball and slider for strikes.

"He was commanding all of his pitches," Grandal said, "I felt we had a really good plan today."

Grandal passed on a simple message when he congratulated Maeda after he left the game.

"Just believe in the process in how to get the out," said Grandal, "just concentrate in executing."

The Dodgers will have the next four days off. When they return from the All-Star break, the Dodgers will start a nine-game road trip with a weekend series against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix. Bud Norris will take the mound for the Dodgers against a Diamondback to be announced.

Kenta Maeda entered the All-Star break spitting hot fire, obliterating his season high in strikeouts, but more importantly gave the Dodgers some much-needed length in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Padres at Dodger Stadium.

Maeda struck out 13 on Sunday, four more than his previous high, and walked none. He allowed only two hits, one a home run by Derek Norris in the fifth inning. But after the home run, Maeda struck out the next six batters and retired his final eight batters faced.

It was just the 15th game since 1913 by a Dodger with at least 13 strikeouts and no walks. The seven innings matched Maeda's longest start of the season, along with April 17 against San Francisco.

Even with the pile up of strikeouts he needed only 97 pitches to get through seven innings, the first time a Dodgers starter lasted that long since Clayton Kershaw on June 20, 19 games ago. But the situation was even more dire than that, with no Dodger starting pitcher lasting even six innings since July 2.

Entering the finale of the 10-game homestand on Sunday, Dodgers relief pitchers had thrown more innings (44) than the starters (42) in the last nine games, but Maeda was able to turn that around.

Maeda was the first non-Kershaw Dodgers starter to last seven innings since Scott Kazmir (8⅔) on May 14 against St. Louis.

That game against the Cardinals was also memorable for another reason, as it featured a home run by Adrian Gonzalez at Dodger Stadium.

On Sunday he hit another, his first home home run since May 14, snapping a dry spell of 115 plate appearances at Dodger Stadium. It was the first home run for Gonzalez anywhere since June 11, with a homerless span of 27 games and 111 plate appearances in between.

But outside of home runs, Gonzalez has been hot of late, ever since he took himself out of the starting lineup for the final two games in Pittsburgh on June 26-27. After that series against the Pirates, Gonzalez is 20-for-44 (.455) with six doubles, 10 walks and now a home run to go with his 11 RBI in his last 13 games.

The home run by Gonzalez gave the Dodgers a 3-1 advantage. The first two runs featured prominent involvement from another veteran heating up of late, with Howie Kendrick going 3-for-4.

Kendrick doubled in the first inning and scored on a single by Corey Seager, then singled in the second inning to drive home Scott Van Slyke. So far in July, Kendrick is hitting .351 (13-for-37) with six doubles, a home run and three walks in 10 games.

Joe Blanton struck out a batter in the eighth inning and Kenley Jansen fanned two in the ninth, giving the Dodgers 866 strikeouts as a team, the most in baseball this season, 12 more than Washington, who has played one fewer game.

The Dodgers head into the break on a high note, with three straight wins, and for the third consecutive season see themselves at 51-40.

LOS ANGELES --- While the Dodgers get ready go close out the first half, this morning brought an update about Clayton Kershaw as he works on his return to the Dodgers.

Manager Dave Roberts said Clayton Kershaw had a light bullpen today at Dodger Stadium. He threw about 20-25 pitches.

The rotation was also announced for the first five games after the All-Star break: Righthanders Bud Norris, Brandon McCarthy and Kenta Maeda will go against the Diamondbacks in Phoenix next weekend and then lefthanders Scott Kazmir and Hyun-Jin Ryu will pitch the first two games against the Nationals in Washington D.C.

Roberts also spoke about today's starter and what he thinks he needs to do to be successful

"When guys face Kenta, they're looking out over it, sometimes sitting soft," said Roberts, "I've said it before, I think that Kenta's got more room inside than I think [Maeda] does inside for the fastball."

Roberts added that ultimately, Maeda has to be confident in his ability to throw the fastball inside.

"But when you take that mound, you are 60 feet, six inches from Matt Kemp," Roberts said, "you still have to be convicted to execute it in there for fear of not getting hit."

With all that, Roberts sees Maeda having a good outing this afternoon.

"He's prepared and we've got a good scouting report so like I said, I expect him to throw well today."

The Dodgers close out their first half trying to win their four-game series against the Padres at Dodger Stadium, trying to head into the All-Star break on a three-game winning streak.

It's not really the halfway point, as Sunday marks the 91st game of the season, with 71 remaining. Should the Dodgers win on Sunday they will be 51-40 for the third season in a row.

A win on Sunday could also give Kenley Jansen a chance at another save. At 26 saves to date this season, Jansen is one shy of his most before an All-Star break, set in 2014. But two years ago the Dodgers played an absurd 97 games before the break, and Jansen through 91 team games that year had 26.

The only Dodger with more saves before the All-Star break is Eric Gagne, who saved 32 games before the break in 2002 (in 88 team games) and 31 games in 2003 (in 93games).

But first things first. Kenta Maeda will be on the mound to start on Sunday, making his 18th start of the season, five days after his last start.

In eight starts with extra rest (seven times with five days rest, once with seven days), Maeda is 4-1 with a 2.60 ERA, with a 23.7-percent strikeout rate, a 7.9-percent walk rate, three home runs allowed, and four quality starts.

In nine starts with regular four days rest, Maeda is 3-5 with a 3.48 ERA, with a 24.1-percent strikeout rate, 7.9-percent walk rate, six home runs allowed, and five quality starts.

Maeda is 3⅓ innings away from 100 on the season, which would trigger a $250,000 bonus for the right-hander.

Christian Friedrich starts for the Padres, as the Dodgers try to even their record this season (9-10) in games started by opposing left-handed pitchers.

The Padres come to town to finish off the pre-All-Star break schedule, with four games against the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Here is a look at the schedule for the series as well as the probable starting pitchers.

Thursday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Hyun-jin Ryu makes his first start in a major league game that counts for the first time in 640 days, since Game 4 of the 2014 NLDS. Ryu before shoulder surgery was 4-0 with a 0.84 ERA in five career starts against the Padres, with 32 strikeouts and five walks in 32⅓ innings.

Drew Pomeranz has been a bright spot for the Padres this season, putting up a 2.65 ERA and 3.20 FIP in 16 starts, with 109 strikeouts in 95 innings. His 10.1-percent walk rate is on the high side (National League starting pitchers have a 7.7-percent walk rate in 2016), but in his last three starts he has two total walks to go with his 20 strikeouts and a 1.80 ERA in 20 innings.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Scott Kazmir has faced the Padres twice this season, both in San Diego, and had wildly different results. The left-hander retired his final 17 batters faced on April 5, with six scoreless innings, five strikeouts and no walks. Kazmir also struck out five in 5⅔ innings on May 20 at Petco Park, but also walked a career-high seven while allowing five runs, including two home runs.

Andrew Cashner has been on the disabled list twice this season, missing 14 games in May with a right hamstring strain, then missing 19 games in June and July with a strained neck. Since returning from that second DL trip, Cashner has made only one start, and it was a good one, striking out six in six innings, allowing two runs (only one earned) in a no-decision against the Yankees on Sunday.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. (Fox)

Brandon McCarthy makes his second start since activation from the disabled list, following up his eight-strikeout performance in five scoreless innings in his 2016 debut on Sunday. He also gets an extra day of rest this time through the rotation, as does Kazmir.

Luis Perdomo is the second Luis Perdomo to pitch for the Padres, and both are right-handers from the Dominican Republic. This incarnation is a 23-year-old who was a Rule 5 pick from the Cardinals in December, with a 7.93 ERA, 53 strikeouts and 26 walks in 59 innings. In six starts, that ERA is 6.75, with 29 strikeouts and 10 walks in 29⅓ innings, compared to a 9.10 ERA in 29⅔ innings in relief.

Matt Vasgersian, John Smoltz and Ken Rosenthal will call the game for Fox, which has exclusive broadcast rights to Saturday's game.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Kenta Maeda needs to record 10 outs on Sunday to reach 100 innings and earn a $250,000 bonus. He has allowed four runs in 11 innings to the Padres this season, with 10 strikeouts and one walk. Maeda is coming off what was tied for his shortest outing of the year at four innings, and he allowed four runs, a limit Maeda has reached six times in 17 starts but to date has yet to allow more than four runs in a start.

Christian Friedrich, the second southpaw along with Pomeranz the Dodgers will face this series, has allowed 21 runs in 21 innings in his last four starts, with no fewer than four runs in any of those starts, and five home runs allowed during that span.
