The Dodgers scored 53 runs in their nine-game road trip, 5.89 per game.

Adrian Gonzalez and Howie Kendrick continued their power surge, guiding a suddenly hot Dodgers offense to a 9-6 win over the Cardinals on Sunday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

The win for the Dodgers secured a second straight series win, a winning road trip, and rather amazingly moved the club to within three games of San Francisco in the National League West. The Dodgers have cut their 6½-game deficit at the All-Star break by more than half in only 10 days.

For the second time in five days, the Dodgers jumped all over a pitcher making his major league debut. Mike Mayers was the victim on Sunday, called up from Triple-A Memphis only to see the Dodgers load the bases with nobody out in the first inning.

Gonzalez followed with a grand slam to center field, his second straight game with a home run, and the first time since July 12 & 17, 2015 that he hit home runs in consecutive games.

Four batters in, the Dodgers had a 4-0 lead.

Gonzalez on the night had three hits, and since his two days of not starting in Pittsburgh on June 26-27 is hitting .349/.433/.542 with 18 RBI in 22 games. He is the eighth different Dodger with four or more RBI in a game this season, and on Sunday had the fourth such game for the team on his road trip.

Kendrick followed with a double, and Mayers' first-inning troubles were far from over. Scott Kazmir got to bat in the first inning before he even took the mound, and helped himself with a two-run single up the middle, doubling his career RBI total.

But the Dodgers weren't done after a six-run first inning, tying their largest output in any single inning in 2016. With one out in the second inning, singles by Justin Turner and Gonzalez produced, with the help of a throwing error, one run, followed by Howie Kendrick muscling an opposite-field home run into the seats in right field for a 9-1 lead.

Mayers ended his night allowing nine runs while recording just four outs, the first pitcher to allow nine runs to the Dodgers in an outing that short since Taylor Phillips of the Milwaukee Braves on July 15, 1957 at Ebbets Field.

But his start was even more rare.

Kendrick on the night was 2-for-5, extending his hitting streak to 16 games, the longest active streak in baseball. The only hitting streak longer in Kendrick's career was an 18-game his streak from June 20 to July 9, 2011 with the Angels.

Pickle juice and mustard was on the menu for Kazmir's last start as he battled through calf cramps, but Sunday might as well have included Bartles & Jaymes, thankful for all the run support. But that's nothing new for Kazmir, who has seen the Dodgers score 111 runs in his 20 starts, an average of 5.55 per contest.

Kazmir allowed three runs in the first two innings, but was able to last through five without allowing the Cardinals to creep any closer. And he threw strikes for the most part, with no walks on the night.

Turner and Corey Seager each added two hits, making the Dodgers' 2-5 hitters a combined 9-for-19 (.474) on the night with two home runs, two doubles, seven runs scored and six RBI. Joc Pederson added two singles and two walks in the win.

All good things...

Adam Liberatore began the seventh inning with a 9-3 lead, but after a strikeout allowed a single and two walks to load the bases. It was just the second time this season Liberatore walked two in a game, also doing so on May 22 in San Diego.

That second walk was the end of Liberatore's night, which brought in Joe Blanton in relief. It also marked the end of Liberatore's scoreless streak, as Blanton allowed a sacrifice fly and a two-run double to cut the Dodgers' lead to 9-6.

Liberatore's scoreless appearance streak ended at 28, a Dodgers franchise record. The only other time Liberatore allowed a run this season was May 18 in Anaheim. Before Sunday, Liberatore bequeathed 12 runners in his 42 appearances, in games he left in the middle of an inning, and none of them scored. On Sunday, all three runners he left on the bases scored.

Such is baseball.

Kenley Jansen retired the Cardinals in the ninth inning for his 29th save of the season.

Up next

The Dodgers are off Monday, then open a brief interleague two-game set against the Rays at home. With trade winds swirling, Chris Archer starts for Tampa Bay in the opener on Tuesday, against Bud Norris, technically on three days rest after his 1⅓ innings of relief on Friday night in St. Louis.

Sunday particulars

The Dodgers go for a series win over the Cardinals on Sunday night, and will do so with the same lineup that scored seven runs in Saturday's win.

That means no Yasiel Puig still, his fourth straight game out of the lineup and third since leaving Thursday's game with tightness in his right hamstring.

Puig did appear as a pinch hitter in Friday night's game.

After a three-hit night on Saturday, the lefty-batting Andrew Toles gets the call again in right field, against the right-handed Mike Mayers, starting for St. Louis. Toles faced Mayers on May 10 in Tulsa when both were in Double-A, and was 3-for-3 against him with a stolen base.

St. Louis roster move

The Cardinals recalled Mayers to start Sunday night's game, his major league debut. To make room on the roster, right-hander Miguel Socolovich was optioned to Triple-A Memphis.

Socolovich pitched the final two innings for St. Louis on Saturday, with two strikeouts and a walk.

The Dodgers have a chance to conclude their second-longest road trip of the season with a winning record on Sunday night in their series finale against the Cardinals on ESPN.

This current nine-game trip has seen the Dodgers go 4-4 out of the All-Star break, and a win on Sunday would even their road record on the season, currently 25-26.

That .500 mark is near where the Dodgers have mostly lived away from home this season. In their three previous longest trips in 2016, the club went 4-3, 3-4 and 3-4. There is one more seven-game trip planned this season, Aug. 16-22 in Philadelphia and Cincinnati, and a 10-game trip from Sept. 9-18 against the Marlins, Yankees and Diamondbacks.

On this current road trip, the Dodgers have hit well, scoring 44 runs (5.5 per game) while hitting .278/.337/.437. The main culprits are exactly who you might imagine.

Justin Turner has five home runs and 14 RBI during the eight-game trip, hitting .378 (14-for-37).

Howie Kendrick, owner of an active 15-game hitting streak, and during this trip is hitting .400/.488/.543 with seven runs scored.

Corey Seager is hitting .407 (11-for-27) with five doubles, and the only thing that kept him down was a stomach flu that wiped him out for three games.

But there have been other contributors too on the trip. Andrew Toles and Scott Van Slyke have combined to form one very productive outfielder, hitting .389 (14-for-36) with three doubles during the trip, and Chris Taylor has slugged .591 in his 24 plate appearances, including his six-RBI game in Arizona.

On the season, the Dodgers are third in the National League in scoring on the road, averaging 4.69 runs per game away from home.

That offense will face Mike Mayers, who will be called up from Triple-A Memphis to make his major league debut for the Cardinals. The 24-year-old right-hander, drafted by St. Louis in the third round in 2013, is 8-5 with a 2.62 ERA in 18 minor league starts this season, nine each for Double-A Springfield and Triple-A, with 86 strikeouts and 36 walks in 106⅔ innings.

The only Dodger to have faced Mayers is Andrew Toles, who was 3-for-3 against Mayers on May 10, for Double-A Tulsa at home against Springfield. In addition to the three singles, one of the infield variety, Toles also stole a base against Mayers.

Scott Kazmir starts for the Dodgers, coming off a seven-inning start on Tuesday in Washington. That was his second-longest start of the season, behind only an 8⅔-inning gem against these Cardinals on May 14 at Dodger Stadium.

Beginning with that start against St. Louis, Kazmir is 6-0 with a 3.61 ERA in 12 starts, with 78 strikeouts (a 27.5-percent strikeout rate) and 27 walks in 67⅓ innings. Opponents during that span are hitting .213/.295/.361 against him.

The Dodgers conclude their road trip with three games against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Here is a look at the schedule and probable starting pitching matchups for the weekend series.

Friday, 5:15 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Brandon McCarthy has 22 strikeouts and four walks in 16 innings since returning from the disabled list, allowing no runs in two of his three starts. Right-handed batters are 4-for-37 (.108) with two walks and 15 strikeouts against McCarthy this season.

The Dodgers tagged Michael Wacha for six runs at Dodger Stadium on May 13, the start of a five-start skid that saw him allow 27 runs in 23 innings. But since then, Wacha has a 3.35 ERA in his last seven starts, with 39 strikeouts and 13 walks in 42 innings.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Kenta Maeda looks to rebound from allowing a season-worst five runs on Sunday, now facing the Cardinals for the first time. This will be a lucrative start for Maeda, who will receive $1 million for making his 20th start and once he's able to complete two innings will earn another $250,000 for reaching 110 innings on the season.

Mike Leake had 66 strikeouts in 104 innings in his first 17 starts, a 15-percent strikeout rate. But he enters this weekend with consecutive double-digit strikeout starts, giving him four total such games in his career. With 21 strikeouts and two walks in 13 innings in those two starts, Leake has a 1.38 ERA to go with his 42-percent strikeout rate.

Sunday, 5:05 p.m. (ESPN)

Scott Kazmir is coming off one of his best starts of the year, with eight strikeouts and no walks, allowing just a run while reaching seven innings. He has a 2.25 ERA in three July starts, with 23 strikeouts and just three walks in 16 innings.

The Cardinals haven't yet announced their Sunday starter. The spot came open with Tuesday's rainout, which moved Carlos Martinez up to Wednesday to pitch in a doubleheader, taking him out of commission for Sunday unless the club wants to start him on short rest.

Lyons, a 28-year-old left-hander, has a 3.54 ERA in 27 games in relief for St. Louis this season, with 42 strikeouts and 12 walks in 40⅔ innings. He faced two batters, throwing 10 pitches on Wednesday, his only outing since the All-Star break.

Lyons has had four relief appearances of at least three innings this season, topping out at 4⅔ on June 25.

The final game of that series against the Cardinals will now be a 5 p.m. PT start, with Dan Shulman, Jessica Mendoza and Aaron Boone calling the game along with Buster Olney for ESPN, which has exclusive broadcast rights on Sunday night.

This will be the sixth time the Dodgers play on 'Sunday Night Baseball' in 2016, including a loss to the Cardinals at Dodger Stadium on May 15, a series in which the Dodgers won the other two games. The Dodgers beat the Giants on April 17 at home and beat the Mets on May 29 in New York. They lost to the Giants on June 12 in San Francisco and to the Pirates on June 26 in Pittsburgh.

The July 24 game in St. Louis is the final game of the Dodgers' road trip, and they are off the next day before opening a five-game homestand back in Los Angeles.
