The Dodgers’ depth has been tested in an uncommon fashion this season, and on Wednesday night the depths of their patience was tested while getting routed 12-2 by the Rockies, who have won the first two games of this three-game series at Coors Field in Denver.

Clayton Kershaw last pitched on June 26, and while the club has performed admirably in his absence, the toll on the rest of the pitching staff has been enormous.

On a day the Dodgers confirmed what most assumed or feared, that Kershaw would not return until Aug. 27 at the earliest, the club also lost two of its most trusted members of the bullpen, with Adam Liberatore and Louis Coleman also hitting the disabled list, extending the Dodgers’ own National League record with 25 players in the infirmary in 2016.

After the Dodgers were able to survive with four starters for two weeks thanks some well-timed off days, Brock Stewart was asked to fill in on Wednesday with his second major league start.

It did not go well.

Staked to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, Stewart allowed two singles to open the bottom of the inning then left a pitch over the plate to Nolan Arenado, who crushed a ball into the seats to give Colorado the lead.

After a single, Mark Reynolds followed with a home run to center field, one that Joc Pederson had a beat on but couldn’t quite catch, and lost his glove over the wall trying to make the grab.

The Dodgers have allowed five or more runs in a single inning eight times in 107 games in 2016, and Stewart was on the mound for two of them, one in each of his major league starts.

Though Stewart was able to settle down after the rocky first inning, he ran into more trouble in the fifth. After getting a combined 11 outs out of their starting pitchers in the previous two games, the Dodgers desperately needed length from Stewart, but it wasn’t to be.

He faced five batters in the fifth and retired none, allowing two more home runs as Colorado broke the game open.

Stewart allowed 9 runs on 10 hits while recording 12 outs on Wednesday, becoming just the fourth Dodgers pitcher in the last 104 years to allow five or more runs in each of his first two major league games, and the first since Terry Wells.

By all accounts, Stewart has had a wonderful 2016 season, climbing both the prospect list and the Dodgers organizational depth chart. He has a bright future and that hasn’t really changed. But his first two major league starts have been mostly terrible.

Dodgers starting pitchers have failed to finish five innings 10 times in their last 23 starts, averaging just 4.82 innings during that span, with a 5.59 ERA.

Meanwhile, Julio Urias pitched three innings of mop-up duty. He allowed three runs of his own so obviously isn’t beyond reproach, but if there is some rhyme or reason to his usage pattern I certainly haven’t figured it out yet.

And I’m not alone.

The Dodgers head into the weekend hoping to have Rich Hill ready at some point with his blister, and hope to have Bud Norris and his tight lat ready too.

Whether the Dodgers need to dip deeper into the pitching well remains to be seen, but whoever is on the mound will need to do better than what the Dodgers got in the first two games of this series.

Then again, San Francisco does seem to want to cooperate, falling 5-4 in Philadelphia on Wednesday night to keep the Dodgers still just two games out in the National League West.

Up next

The Dodgers try to avoid the sweep with Kenta Maeda on the mound on five days rest. Tyler Chatwood starts for Colorado in a 5:40 p.m. PT start.

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers recalled Brock Stewart from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make his scheduled start on Wednesday night against the Rockies at Coors Field in Denver, but that was far from the only move.

Josh Fields, acquired on Monday from the Astros, and Julio Urias were recalled from Triple-A Oklahoma City, while pitchers Adam Liberatore and Louis Coleman were placed on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation and right shoulder fatigue, respectively.

In addition, outfielder Andrew Toles was optioned to Oklahoma City to make room on the roster for Stewart.

The Dodgers also transferred Clayton Kershaw to the 60-day DL, which means the earliest he is eligible to return is Aug. 26. But given that he has yet to throw a baseball since his July 16 simulated game, that was basically already the case anyway, given the amount of rehab time he will likely need to return.

The move was necessary to make room on the 40-man for Josh Ravin, whose 80-game PED suspension ended on Tuesday. Ravin was reinstated and optioned to Oklahoma City.

Liberatore and Coleman are the 24th and 25th different Dodgers on the disabled list this season, a National League record, and just two shy of the major league record set by the 2012 Red Sox, a team that lost 93 games and finished in last place in their division.

The Dodgers this year are 59-46, on pace for 90 wins, currently leading the wild card race and two games out of first place in the National League West.

Liberatore tweaked his knee covering first base on July 24 in St. Louis, but this elbow situation is new.

"I know [Reddick] feels he's an everyday guy. I've seen him play every day in stretches, and have quality at-bats against left-handed pitching," said general manager Farhan Zaidi on Monday. "The fact that he brings Gold Glove-caliber defense adds to the value of him being out there every day. That's ultimately a question for [Dave Roberts], if he wants to address it."

Yasmani Grandal hit his 16th home run of the season on Tuesday night. | Photo by Dustin Bradford/Getty Images

The calendar shifted to August, but Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal kept hitting like July, hitting another home run in Tuesday’s loss to the Rockies. He’ll look for more of the same in the middle game of the series on Wednesday night at Coors Field.

It’s no given that Grandal will start on Wednesday, with left-hander Tyler Anderson starting for the Rockies. Grandal has started just eight times in the 25 games the Dodgers faced an opposing southpaw this season, though he has started against four of the last six left-handers they have faced.

The home run the switch-hitting Grandal hit on Tuesday was hit right-handed.

It was his 16th home run of the season, matching his career high, set last season. This year’s total has come in 288 plate appearances, compared to 426 total PA in 2016.

As Grandal told reporters after the game on Tuesday night, as well as after hitting a home run on Sunday in Los Angeles, he is fully healthy and able to put good swings on the ball, with no remnants from his offseason shoulder surgery.

The shoulder injury sapped Grandal of his power in the final two months of last season.

One year ago today, he was hitting .292/.400/.514 with 15 home runs in 301 plate appearances, before starting a Pennsylvania road trip that would see him get hurt.

He ended last year just 9-for-102 (.088) with one home run in his final 33 games.

This year, he homered on the final day of June, then hit eight more home runs in July, hitting .324/.439/.691, second in the majors in OPS and wOBA (.467) only to Joey Votto for the month.

The home run on Tuesday gave Grandal 10 home runs in his last 23 games, the most in baseball since June 30.

No Dodgers catcher has hit 20 home runs since Paul Lo Duca in 2001, when he hit 25 (20 as a catcher).

Grandal, who hit all 16 of his home runs in 2015 as a catcher and who has hit all 16 of his homers this season as a catcher too, is the first Dodgers catcher with back-to-back seasons of at least 15 home runs since Todd Hundley, who hit 24 in both 1999 and 2000.

With 16 home runs as a catcher this season, Grandal is tied with Wilson Ramos of the Nationals for most in baseball, one more than Salvador Perez of the Royals. Grandal is also fourth in the majors in wRC+ among catchers with at least 200 plate appearances.

But it’s not just the home runs. Grandal has reached base by hit or walk in each of his last 15 starts, dating back to July 6. He’s 20-for-60, hitting .333/.452/.700 during that span.

Notes

The eight walks issued by Dodgers pitchers on Tuesday was one shy of a season high, set on April 24, also at Coors Field. LA also walked eight in two other games this season — May 20 in San Diego and June 28 in Milwaukee.

Brock Stewart walked two in his major league debut on June 29 in Milwaukee, though one was intentional. He hasn’t issued more than one unintentional walk in a start since May 11 for Double-A Tulsa against Arkansas. Since then, in 12 starts between Tulsa, Triple-A Oklahoma City and Los Angeles, Stewart has eight unintentional walks and 84 strikeouts in 74 innings, to go with a 2.68 ERA.

Tyler Anderson and his 56.1-percent ground ball rate — 10th-highest among the 185 pitchers with at least 50 innings this season — starts for the Rockies. The rookie has a 3.47 ERA in six home starts, with 35 strikeouts and eight walks in 36⅓ innings.

The Dodgers have alternated wins and losses in their last six games.

The Dodgers are back in the pitching hell hole of Coors Field in Denver beginning Tuesday night against the Rockies. Here is a look at the probable starting pitchers for the three-game series.

Tuesday, 5:40 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Brandon McCarthy struck out eight Rockies in five scoreless innings on July 3, his first start back off the disabled list. Jon Gray had quality starts in all five July outings, putting up a 1.89 ERA for the month, including three straight seven-inning games to end the month, with two total runs allowed.

Wednesday, 5:40 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Kenta Maeda has allowed one run in 13 innings in his two starts against the Rockies, with 17 strikeouts and two walks. Rookie Tyler Anderson has six quality starts in his nine major league starts and has lasted at least six innings seven times. In his other two starts, he went 5⅔ innings.

Thursday, 5:40 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Scott Kazmir has no walks in his last three starts, with 22 strikeouts since his last free pass, and 33 strikeouts against only three walks in July to go with his 3.58 ERA. Tyler Chatwood has at least as many walks as strikeouts in his last seven starts, with 27 walks and 21 strikeouts in 33⅓ innings during that span.

I'm guessing this might be the first time the Dodgers have faced two straight starting pitchers named Tyler.
