LOS ANGELES --- A pair of former Oklahoma City Dodgers led the Dodgers to a 7-4 win at Dodger Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Jose De Leon won his first career start and outfielder Yasiel Puig hit a three-run home run and also had a key walk in a two-run rally. Yasmani Grandal would also hit a home run and he drove in three runs.

Rob Segedin was all set to pinch-hit for Jose De Leon when in a span of a few pitches, Yasmani Grandal was thrown out attempting to advance to second base on a ball in the dirt and then Corey Seager struck out.

Manager Dave Roberts had Grant Dayton ready in the bullpen but instead De Leon returned to the mound to pitch the sixth inning. De Leon responded by striking out the side to finish his first career start with a flourish.

De Leon pitched six innings and struck out nine and walked none. That was the most strikeouts with no walks in a major league debut in Los Angeles Dodger history.

That was the second most strikeouts by a Los Angeles Dodger in a major league debut behind Pedro Astacio and Kazuhisa Ishii, who each had ten strikeouts in their first game.

The game was scoreless until the third inning, with two out and a runner on, Yangervis Solarte drilled a two-run homer to right.

The Dodgers answered, with one out, Justin Turner walked and then Adrian Gonzalez laid down a perfect bunt towards third base and there was no one there in time to field it. Yasiel Puig followed with his eighth home run to make it 3-2 Dodgers.

De Leon contributed to the Padres rally in the fifth. with one out and a runner on second, De Leon made a poor throw after he fielded Travis Jankowski's bunt, the throw hit the runner and allowed Alexi Amarista to tie the game.

Jankowski eventually scored on Solarte's sacrifice fly to give the Padres the lead.

But then again, the Dodgers came back in the bottom of the inning. Turner walked with one out, Kevin Quackenbush came in to pitch to the Puig.

The move did not work as Puig walked. Then back-to-back singles by Chase Utley and the pinch-hitting Yasmani Grandal made it 5-4.

Grandal added two insurance runs with his 23rd home run of the season.

Grant Dayton, Joe Blanton and Kenley Jansen each pitched a scoreless inning to finish up the game. Jansen recorded his 41st save of the season.

Up next

The Dodgers will start a three-game series on Monday as they host the Arizona Diamondbacks. Zack Greinke will be paired against Kenta Maeda in the first game scheduled to start late Monday afternoon.

Manager Dave Roberts said this morning that Clayton Kershaw will start on Friday at Miami. He also said that rotation for the upcoming Arizona series will be Kenta Maeda, Ross Stripling and Brock Stewart

LOS ANGELES ----- Manager Dave Roberts said that Clayton Kershaw will return to the Dodgers' rotation on Friday when he makes the start against the Marlins at Miami.

"It's a big lift, everybody in the clubhouse is excited, anticipating Clayton's return," Roberts said, "for Clayton, to watch his teammates play for this length of time I know was killing him, so to be active again and to help us win a baseball game, I think that he is over the moon."

Kershaw made a rehab start last night at Rancho Cucamonga when he pitched three scoreless innings and struck out five. Kershaw made 34 pitches in his start and then threw 15 more in the bullpen.a

"[Kershaw] is coming off 50 pitches, 35 in a game, there really is no hard number," Roberts said, "I'm going to be aware of the usage, as big as a start as it is, to get him back, I think the bigger picture is also going forward and managing it. Clayton is going to want to go as far as he can go but that's definitely my job to manage that."

Roberts said the rotation will be Kenta Maeda, Ross Stripling and Brock Stewart for the upcoming series against Diamondbacks.

Roberts gave updates on upcoming rehab appearances for Brandon McCarthy and Scott Kazmir. McCarthy will pitch on Monday September 5th for the Quakes at Rancho Cucamonga.

Scott Kazmir will start for the Oklahoma City Dodgers on Wednesday September 7th at Oklahoma City. That will be Game 1 of the Dodgers first round playoff series against the Nashville Sounds (Athletics).

"[Kazmir] is going to be [six innings and 90 pitches] and at that point and time, if it goes well as we expect," Roberts said, "then we will see him in one of those games against the Yankees."

Brett Anderson also made a rehab appearance at Rancho Cucamonga on last night, he pitched two innings and allowed six runs and nine hits. Roberts said that his blister continues to be an issue.

"Brett had a little bit of an issue with a blister resurfacing, Roberts said, "we got to re-assess with the medical staff about what we are going to do next with Brett."

Corey Seager is getting a day off with a day game following a night game. Austin Barnes is starting at catcher because he and today's starting pitcher, Jose De Leon, worked together in minors, most recently at Oklahoma City.

Sunday will be the 56th start by a Dodgers rookie pitcher this season

When Jose De Leon starts for the Dodgers on Sunday in the series finale against the Padres, he will join an ever-growing list of rookie contributors to the LA pitching staff in 2016.

De Leon will be the fifth Dodgers pitcher in 2016 to start in his major league debut, joining Kenta Maeda (April 6), Ross Stripling (April 8), Julio Urias (May 27) and Brock Stewart (June 29). If five rookie debuts seem like a lot, it’s because it is.

Even if we remove the 28-year-old Maeda, who joined the Dodgers with seven full seasons of experience in Japan, having four rookie starting pitchers make their debut is a ton. No Dodgers team has had more than two such debuts since World War II, when the 1944 Brooklyn club saw starters Ben Chapman, Frank Wurm and John Wells make their debuts.

The four previous debuts in 2016 for the Dodgers have ran the gamut from Maeda’s six scoreless frames in San Diego, to Urias unable to get out of the third inning in New York. On the whole, the quartet put up a 3.86 ERA in their opening games, with 18 strikeouts and 10 walks in 21 innings.

Though the Dodgers have lost three of the four games, the club is 31-24 in games started by rookie pitchers this season, with those starters posting a collective 3.98 ERA while averaging 5.35 innings per start.

De Leon’s start on Sunday will be the Dodgers’ 56th start by a rookie in 2016, tying the 1995 club for the most rookie starts in a season since the franchise moved west in 1958. That mark will be broken on Monday, when Maeda is expected to start against Arizona.

De Leon has a 2.61 ERA in 16 starts this season for Triple-A Oklahoma City, with 111 strikeouts and 20 walks in 86⅓ innings. The right-hander struck out 13 in 7⅔ scoreless innings against Colorado Springs on Sunday to clinch the American North Division in the Pacific Coast League for Oklahoma City, and has three straight starts of double-digit strikeouts.

De Leon has lasted seven innings or longer in five of his last six and six of his last eight starts. He has an active 17⅔-inning scoreless streak, and 40 strikeouts since his last walk.

He was originally scheduled to start Friday for Oklahoma City, which opens their postseason on Wednesday against Nashville.

Dodgers are 8-5 vs. San Diego in 2016

The Dodgers welcome the Padres to town to open a homestand beginning Friday night, and as usual TBD fights it out with TBA for prominence in the LA starting rotation. Here is a look at the probable, or possible, starting pitchers for the three-game series.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Julio Urias is the one pitcher we know will pitch for the Dodgers this weekend against the Padres, nearing ever closer to his innings limit, which will either end his season or necessitate a shift to the bullpen very soon. The left-hander has pitched six innings in back-to-back starts and is 4-0 in his last four games with a 0.92 ERA, 19⅔ strikeouts and seven walks in 19 innings.

Clayton Richard started the year in relief and with the Cubs, but got traded to San Diego last month. Richaed had a 6.46 ERA in 27 relief appearances, with nearly as many walks (9) as strikeouts (10). Since moving back into starting duty with the Padres, Richard has allowed four runs, two earned, in 18 innings.

Richard also is an ambulatory human who throws with his left hand, which has usually meant good things in 2016 against the Dodgers.

Saturday, 6:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Luis Perdomo starts the middle game for the Padres, and has by most accounts been pretty bad all year, with a 5.84 ERA and 4.62 FIP. But in his last seven starts he has a 3.52 ERA, including one earned run in 16 innings in his last two starts. The Dodgers have tagged him for 15 runs and 25 hits in 13 innings this season, and are hitting .410/.479/.541 in 71 plate appearances against the rookie.

Might this be where Rich Hill slots back into the rotation, after being held out Wednesday following a Tuesday rainout that saw him throw 41 pitches in preparing for the game.

This is also the obligatory spot where it must be mentioned that Jose De Leon is scheduled to start on Friday for Triple-A Oklahoma City, and that Saturday would be five days rest after his 13-strikeout, 7⅔-scoreless-inning performance last Sunday.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Christian Friedrich, another left-hander, has a 5.36 ERA since the All-Star break, with just 17 strikeouts in 40⅓ innings, and 14 walks.

It stands to reason that since Kenta Maeda pitched on Monday that he would be in line to pitch one of these weekend games, and Sunday would be on five days rest, something the Dodgers have tried to do with him whenever possible.

It also could be a day of multitasking, depending on which day Clayton Kershaw throws next, and whether that is (the much more likely option) in a minor league rehab game after his Tuesday simulated game or thrown straight into the major league rotation for his first game in 10 weeks.

The Dodgers weekend pitching scenarios will probably be made more clear on Friday afternoon, before the series opener, but for now this is where we are at.
