Dodgers finish road trip 5-5, head home up 5 in NL West

Brandon Drury singled home Paul Goldschmidt in the 12th inning to give the Diamondbacks a 10-9 walk-off win over the Dodgers, spoiling what was a comeback from down six runs earlier in the game.

With San Francisco’s loss on Sunday, the Dodgers maintained their five-game lead in the National League West, with 13 games left to play. Their magic number to clinch the division is nine.

Ross Stripling pitched four innings in relief and had two outs with nobody on in the 12th inning, but a hustle double on a line drive to center field by Goldschmidt put a runner in scoring position. He scored on a single to left by Drury, who drove home the game-winner in the other extra-inning game between these two teams, on July 16.

The Dodgers used 24 players on Sunday, including nine pitchers. They had three different center fielders and three different second baseman. This was all Yasmani Grandal getting the day off, as did relievers Kenley Jansen, Joe Blanton, Grant Dayton and Pedro Baez.

It was the only run allowed by Stripling, who suffered the loss.

The game seemed destined to point out many of the Dodgers’ flaws, but ended up illuminating some of their strengths, too.

The Dodgers have struggled against left-handed pitchers this season, at or near the bottom in most categories, hitting .213/.292/.334 against southpaws on the season, and including just .191/.273/.289 since Aug. 1.

Robbie Ray on Sunday seemed to drive that point home, retiring his first 14 batters faced until Kiké Hernandez homered in the fifth.

Down 7-1 in the sixth, the Dodgers still had their work cut out for them, with Ray still on the mound. But back-to-back doubles by Howie Kendrick and Justin Turner got the Dodgers another run, then a walk and single brought home another, ending Ray’s day.

Randall Delgado in relief walked his first two batters faced to force in a run, loading the bases in a 7-4 game. Adrian Gonzalez was up, but rather than face the right-hander he saw southpaw Edwin Escobar instead.

Gonzalez smashed a double into the right field corner to clear the bases, tying the game at 7-7.

Kendrick hit a two-run double to give the Dodgers a 9-7 lead in the eighth inning, but in the bottom of the inning Chris Owings hit a two-run home run to tie things up again. Arizona loaded the bases after that home run against three Dodgers relievers, but a fine play by Kendrick at third base ended the threat to keep the game tied.

Kendrick had just moved to third base earlier in the inning on a double switch, in a game he started in left field and also played second base. It was the third time Kendrick has played three positions in one game in 2016, having also done so on May 4 and May 20.

Rough start

Jose De Leon got hit around a little bit, which is to be expected in just his third major league start. He allowed six runs and couldn’t get out of the fourth inning, the big blow a two-run home run from Mitch Haniger, part of a three-run inning that gave Arizona a surmountable 6-0 lead.

De Leon struck out two and walked two, though one of the walks was intentional.

Goldschmidt happens

Goldschmidt scored the winning run but was 1-for-6 with a walk on Sunday. It capped a rough series for Goldschmidt, who was 2-for-18 (.111) with nine strikeouts this weekend.

The Dodgers held Goldschmidt in check in 2016, holding him to just .211/.265/.368 with 25 strikeouts and six walks in 19 games. In his career, Goldschmidt has hit .314/.375/.570 with 24 home runs, 22 doubles and 77 RBI in 95 games.

Up next

The Dodgers return home on Sunday night, and host the Giants in a showdown series beginning tomorrow at Dodger Stadium. Both teams have set up their starting rotations the last few weeks for this series, which starts with Clayton Kershaw against Madison Bumgarner at 7:10 p.m. PT on Monday night.

Sunday particulars

Home runs: Kiké Hernandez (7); Mitch Haniger (3), Brandon Drury (15), Chris Owings (4)

The Dodgers have a chance to come home on Sunday night with a winning road trip, a chance to return to Los Angeles with a winning record on the road, with one more crack at the Diamondbacks at Chase Field in Phoenix.

LA is 5-4 so far in their season-high 10-game road trip, and enter play on Sunday 37-37 away from home.

The Dodgers are 12-6 against the Diamondbacks in 2016 and, for lack of a better term, have owned Arizona for the last three seasons. The Diamondbacks won the season series 10-9, though that ended with a division-clinching win for the Dodgers and a trip to the Chase Field pool.

In 2014, the Dodgers won 15 out of 19 against the Diamondbacks, beating them on two continents, then went 13-6 against them in 2015. That makes 40-16 since the start of the 2014 season for the Dodgers against their division rivals, which according to STATS LLC is the most wins vs. one opponent for any team in baseball during that span.

It holds up pretty well historically for the Dodgers, too, at least since they moved to Los Angeles in 1958. Thanks to the trusty Baseball-Reference Play Index, I searched for the Dodgers' best three-year records against every National League team.

I wanted these records to be against teams they played a decent amount, so out with the Dodgers' 17-3 (.850) mark against the Reds from 2006-08, or their 16-3 (.842) record against the Pirates from 2003-05. Nor will I count the 14-4 (.778) record against the Brewers from 2001-03.

The minimum worked out to be basically 30 games over a three-year span, or really anything over 20 based on how these shook out, but that basically means divisional foes of the last two decades or just about anyone from when there were fewer teams in baseball.

(Remember the glory days when the Dodgers used to play 18 games against NL West teams and 12 games against NL East teams? Get off my lawn!)

Here are the Dodgers' best three-year records against National League teams since moving to Los Angeles:

47-7 (.870) vs. Mets, 1962-64

24-7 (.774) vs. Expos, 1980-82

47-15 (.7581) vs. Phillies, 1960-62

50-16 (.7576) vs. Phillies, 1959-61

39-15 (.722) vs. Giants, 1977-79

26-10 (.722) vs. Expos, 1969-71

40-16 (.714) vs. Diamondbacks, 2014-16

38-16 (.704) vs. Padres, 1972-74

38-16 (.704) vs. Astros, 1974-76

36-16 (.692) vs. Braves 1987-89 or 1988-90

40-18 (.690) vs. Cubs, 1961-63

37-17 (.685) vs. Astros 1963-65

The Dodgers really took advantage of the Mets in the first three years of the latter's existence, and around that same time beat up on Philadelphia something fierce.

A win on Sunday would keep the Dodgers' mark against the D-backs the last three years in the same relative spot, though with a .719 winning percentage. A loss puts them at .701 and knocks them down a few spots.

Jose De Leon makes his third major league start in the series finale, looking for his third win. The Diamondbacks will counter with left-hander Robbie Ray, who has 87 strikeouts in 63 innings since the All-Star break.

The Dodgers are 18-20 against southpaw starters this season, and are set to face left-handers in three of their next four games, with Madison Bumgarner and Matt Moore scheduled to bookend the Giants series in Los Angeles.

Bud Norris gets spot start Saturday in Phoenix

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Wednesday set his starting rotation for the club’s upcoming series against the Diamondbacks, with Bud Norris and Jose De Leon starting Saturday and Sunday in Phoenix.

More than finalizing the pitching matchups in Arizona, it sets up what has been obvious for over a week — that Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill and Kenta Maeda will start the three games next week against the Giants, from Sept. 19-21 at Dodger Stadium.

In addition, Julio Urias as expected will move to the bullpen after his start last night in New York, per David Vassegh of Dodger Talk.

But first things first, Kershaw still needs to start the series finale against the Yankees. Then, here are the pitching matchups against the Diamondbacks, which include three pitchers the Dodgers faced last week at Dodger Stadium.

Thursday, 6:40 p.m. PT: Rich Hill vs. Archie Bradley (SportsNet LA)
Friday, 6:40 p.m.: Kenta Maeda vs. Zack Greinke (SportsNet LA)
Saturday, 5:10 p.m.: Bud Norris vs. Shelby Miller (SportsNet LA)
Sunday, 1:10 p.m.: Jose De Leon vs. Robbie Ray (SportsNet LA)

Saturday is the first start for Norris since Aug. 31. He had a 4.40 ERA in his first seven appearances with the Dodgers, including six starts, with 32 strikeouts and eight walks. But after a stint on the disabled list, Norris has an 11.08 ERA in five games, including three starts, with more walks (13) than strikeouts (10).
