LA drops its longest game of the season

LOS ANGELES — There wasn’t much offense at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday night, but the baseball was still pretty entertaining. It didn’t end well for the Dodgers, however, who succumbed to a three-run 11th-inning rally by the Giants in a 4-1 loss to close out the series.

It was the third extra-inning game in the last five meetings between these two teams, all within the last eight days. In seven meetings this season, the Dodgers and Giants have played four one-run games, and two other games that went to extras tied at 1-1.

San Francisco did most of the offensive threatening all night, leaving 11 on base through 10 innings. But three hits and two walks against Grant Dayton in the 11th produced three runs for the win, with the go-ahead run delivered on an RBI double by Gorkys Hernandez.

The only way both teams scored in regulation was thanks to a misplay that sent a player to third.

In the sixth inning, it was a pop-up by Yasiel Puig down the line in shallow right filed to open the sixth inning, and caught a break when the ball popped out of Joe Panik’s glove. Puig kept running and beat the throw to third for a three-base error. Puig scored on a single by Chris Taylor, one of just three hits the Dodgers tallied against Jeff Samardzija.

The Giants got their run in the eighth when Hunter Pence, who singled, advanced two bases on a wild pitch by Ross Stripling. With one out, the Dodgers decided to play the infield back with Buster Posey at the plate, and he obliged the concession with an RBI ground out to tie the score.

“Buster’s up, an elite, elite hitter. When you’re at home to try to play for the tie, to still have an at-bat and try to extend the game, versus playing in, a seeing-eye gets through and then the inning keeps going and you could potentially lose,” manager Dave Roberts said. “I just felt with the batter-pitcher matchup, I’ll take the extended game.”

Puig showed off his arm with an absolute rifle throw in the fifth inning, though Joe Panik still managed to get his hand on second base for a double anyway. What made the play more exciting was that, as Panik’s drive bounced off the wall, just about everyone in Dodger Stadium was getting excited for what was about to happen. Then, when Puig barehanded the carom and fired to second, he managed to even exceed expectations, even though Panik was safe.

Samardzija showed off his old wide receiver skills in the eighth inning, jumping to receive a throw from Brandon Belt on a spectacular all-around play to retire Puig. But mostly, Samardzija was a beast on the mound, striking out 11 in eight innings.

Julio Urias got himself in and out of jams all night, and walked four batters, including Brandon Belt three times. But Urias was living right, inducing a pair of double plays then escaping a bases-loaded situation in the fifth with a fly out by Pence.

Belt walked four times and delivered an RBI single in the 11th. The Giants scored their third run of the inning on a sacrifice fly that would have been a hit if not for a spectacular diving catch by Andrew Toles.

Kenley Jansen pitched the ninth and struck out every batter he faced, giving him eight strikeouts in a row dating back to last Thursday.

Josh Fields followed in the 10th inning and loaded the bases with one out, but struck out Christian Arroyo and got Eduardo Nunez to fly out to end the threat.

Justin Turner was hit in the left calf by a pitch from Steven Okert in the 10th inning, the seventh HBP of the season for Turner to tie for the major league lead.

The Dodgers tallied a pair of hits against closer Mark Melancon in the 11th, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Corey Seager grounded out to end it.

Up next

The Dodgers are off on Thursday, then head to San Diego for a three-game weekend series at Petco Park. Kenta Maeda starts the series opener on Friday night, likely against Jhoulys Chacin for the Padres.

LOS ANGELES — Legendary Dodgers broadcaster Vin Scully returned to Dodger Stadium on Wednesday for his induction into the Dodgers ring of honor, and the Hall of Fame is enjoying every minute of his retirement.

“It’s easier than I thought because I’m totally and completely at peace,” Scully said before Wednesday night’s game. “I’m in the right spot in my life at the right time. I’ll be 90 in November, so I’m not a boy of summer anymore.”

The Dodgers unveiled a circular plaque with a microphone and Scully’s name at the top, displayed along the base of the club level down the left field line, at the end of the other 10 retired numbers in the franchise’s ring of honor. Amazingly, Scully called games of all 10 — eight players and two managers.

“I don’t see those numbers,” Scully explained. “When I look at what you call numbers, I see faces, I hear voices. I see those numbers moving.

“I looked at 39, and I don’t see 39. I see Roy Campanella. I see outside the kitchen at Vero Beach. I used to literally sit at his feet, with a lot of young ballplayers, and Campy would sit and tell stories. I can do that with every number up there.

“There’s a sense of looking back, and that was my graduating class. Those were the ones who started me on my career. It’s very emotional to look up and say ‘I don’t belong up here,’ because I’ve always just sat back and admired every single thing you always did.”

Just before the Dodgers’ game with the Giants, a video tribute was played at Dodger Stadium, then Scully was introduced by Charley Steiner. Scully emerged from the Dodgers dugout, then walked with manager Dave Roberts out to short left field, and the team soon followed.

The blue cover over Scully’s plaque was removed by fellow honorees Sandy Koufax and Tommy Lasorda.

Earlier Wednesday, Scully mentioned in a radio interview with KNX 1070 AM that tonight would be his “last hurrah” at Dodger Stadium. He elaborated a little before the game.

“The Dodgers have been so good to me, so thoughtful. Last year I had so many things that were overwhelming in saying goodbye. Then of course we had San Francisco, where the Giants were unbelievably nice and kind,” Scully said. “Now tonight I’ll go out and join the numbers, but I can’t think of another award I could get, unless it’s cleanliness.

“It’s the last time in my mind that I’ll be in the spotlight. … I plan to be here at times. No one will know.”

Scully was accompanied by his wife Sandi, who has helped him adjust to retired life after 67 years on the job.

“Every minute that I look at Sandi in the house, I know I’m in the right spot in my life. It’s the right time, and the right place,” Scully said. “I like sitting in the back yard and sipping on something cold around five o’clock, instead of being here going over my ad-libs.”

Scully said he doesn’t watch the games, but still keeps up with the news of the team, reading accounts of the game in his morning newspapers. Among the players he mentioned, Scully said, "I'm excited about Cody Bellinger."

What an endorsement.

He keeps up on politics and news with Sandi, and they find things to occupy their time. Scully was asked if he might go see the play Hamilton.

“I really don’t like that kind of music,” Scully said. “If I can’t hum it, I don’t want to see it.”

If there was just one word to describe Scully on Wednesday, it might be content. This was my favorite quote of his pregame meeting with reporters:

“I’ve spent so many thousands of yesterdays, but you get to an age where you say, ‘Yeah, but how many tomorrows?’ If somebody said to you, ‘You’re going to have 123 tomorrows as of today,’ the first thing you’d say is, ‘Whoa, they’re precious. I want to be with the most precious part of my life.’ That’s how I am. No matter how many tomorrows I have, I’m spending the todays exactly the way I wanted to.”

Today’s today was pretty special.

Infielder continues rehab with Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday night

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers are hopeful Logan Forsythe will return this weekend from the disabled list, but it might take a few days longer.

Forsythe is playing second base for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Wednesday night, the second game of his rehab assignment. He is on the disabled list with a fractured right big toe, hit by a pitch on Apr. 18.

But Forsythe is also dealing with some hamstring tightness, which cause him to leave a game early on Apr. 15.

He also left Wednesday’s game early.

“We’re still hopeful to activate Logan on Friday, but if it was a day or two delayed, it wouldn’t completely surprise me,” manager Dave Roberts said. “[The hamstring tightness] resurfaced a little bit. We just want to be sure he feels 100% confident, whenever we activate him.”

UPDATE: After the game, Roberts confirmed that Forsythe exited his rehab game Wednesday with hamstring tightness, and won’t be activated on Friday.

Chris Taylor has excelled in his opportunity with Forsythe on the disabled list, hitting .310/.429/.586 in 12 games. Roberts said that Taylor is playing so well makes it easier to give Forsythe more rehab time if needed.

“I encouraged him to make sure he’s 100%. We have seen guys come back a little bit too soon, then you go back [on the DL],” Roberts said. “To err again, with a couple of extra days, it’s nice to have Chris around.”

Joc Pederson also played for the Quakes on Wednesday, playing seven innings in center field in his third and final rehab game. “He feels that if all goes well, he’ll be back with us on Friday,” Roberts said.

UPDATE: After Wednesday’s game, Roberts said Pederson would be activated Friday.

Kazmir headed to the desert

Scott Kazmir threw 36 pitches off the mound at Dodger Stadium before batting practice on Wednesday, with Roberts, pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, trainer Nate Lucero, president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman, and general manager Farhan Zaidi watching.

“It was coming out pretty good, the delivery repeating was good,” Roberts said. “He and Honey were working well together. I know he feels healthy and strong.”

Roberts after Wednesday’s game said Kazmir would head to Camelback Ranch in Arizona for a few weeks to participate in a throwing program designed to increase his velocity.

“We’re going to get him on a program to build up some more arm strength. It’s important for him to build up arm strength and hand speed, which equates to velocity,” Roberts said. “He’ll be in Arizona for the next couple of weeks.”

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers play their first home rubber game of the season on Wednesday night, trying to capture their fifth straight series win over the Giants at Dodger Stadium.

Contrary to their poor recent history in San Francisco — dropping 18 of their last 24 games at AT&T Park — the Dodgers have fared quite well at home against their chief rivals. The Dodgers have won their last four home series against the Giants and six of their last seven, winning 15 of their last 22 at home games against the Giants, dating back to September 2014.

All three home series against the Giants in 2016 were two games to one, which the Dodgers will try to duplicate on Wednesday night.

The Dodgers have yet to drop a series at home this season, though this is only their fifth series at Dodger Stadium, and two were splits.

Since the start of 2015, the Dodgers are 118-59 (.667) at Dodger Stadium, with seven more home wins than any other team in baseball during that span. The Cubs are next best at 111-62 (.642).

Life at 20

Julio Urias makes his second start of the season, after allowing one run in 5⅔ innings last Thursday against the Giants in San Francisco.

Wednesday night will be the ninth appearance and seventh start for Urias since turning 20 years old last Aug. 12. So far as a 20-year-old, he has allowed only five runs in 34⅓ innings, sporting a 1.31 ERA with 35 strikeouts and 15 walks.

If there is one concern with Urias in the early going this year, it’s his high walk total.

Last season, Urias walked four in his major league debut, and later walked six batters on June 28. But other than that, he never walked more than three in any of his other 16 appearances.

Urias walked four in his 2017 debut last Thursday, including one intentional pass. He also walked nine batters in 14 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City before his call up. Whether he is working out the rust from an odd and intermittent spring training we don’t know, but the left-hander’s walk rate in the majors and minors in 2017 is 16.5%, compared to 7.7% last year.

This will make 7 Dodgers LHP starters in 7 games against San Francisco

The Dodgers and Giants reconnect after last week’s affair, with a three-game series set to open at Dodger Stadium on Monday night. Here is a look at the scheduled starting pitchers for the division matchup in Los Angeles.

Monday. 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Dating back to the start of 2014, Clayton Kershaw is 32-6 with a 1.54 ERA at Dodger Stadium, and the Dodgers have won 36 of his 44 starts (.818). During that same span, Johnny Cueto has a 1.08 ERA at Dodger Stadium but is just 2-2 in his four starts.

Tuesday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Since joining the Dodgers in 2015, Alex Wood owns a 1.76 ERA in 63⅓ innings at Dodger Stadium. Wood pitched six scoreless innings last Wednesday night against the Giants in San Francisco.

Matt Moore’s 35⅔ innings against the Dodgers since the start of 2016 are the third-most by any major league pitcher — Cueto is first with 39⅔ — which is a bit of a surprise since Moore didn’t become a Giants until last year’s trade deadline. Two of his six starts against the Dodgers dating back to 2016 came with the Rays. He owns a 3.79 ERA in those games.

Wednesday, 7:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA, KTLA, MLB Network)

Julio Urias since last year’s All-Star break owns a 1.94 ERA in 46⅓ innings, with 44 strikeouts and 18 walks. Jeff Samardzija lost his first four starts this season before rebounding with a strong outing Friday against the Padres. Samardzija allowed three runs (two earned) in seven innings in a no-decision.
