Cody Bellinger hit two home runs, leading the Dodgers to an 8-2 win over the Padres on Friday night at Petco Park in San Diego.

Believe it or not, this game was a close contest most of the night, with the Padres leading 2-1 after six innings. But the Dodgers scored a pair of runs in the seventh, one in the eighth, then put the game away with four in the ninth.

Three came on Bellinger’s second home run of the night, a shot to dead center. He is the first Dodger with a pair of two-homer games in the first 10 games of his career, dating back to at least 1913.

The rally

Andrew Toles hit a two-run double in the seventh inning, turning a deficit into a lead. The Dodgers got consecutive singles by pinch hitters Chris Taylor and Franklin Gutierrez, both against left-handed reliever Jose Torres. That brought up the left-handed Toles, who drove a ball into the right center field gap to score both runners.

Toles with that two-run double extended his hitting streak to eight games, a streak even more impressive since he didn’t start two of those contests. During the streak, Toles is 12-for-31 (.387) with five extra-base hits.

Yasiel Puig singled with two outs in the eighth inning, then stole second base and advanced to third base on an errant throw. Taylor drove him in with another single, giving the Dodgers an insurance run.

Taylor, who didn’t start on Friday, was 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. He’s 5-for-8 (.625) in games he doesn’t start this season, and hitting .375/.474/.625 in 38 plate appearances overall.

Flashy fourth

The fourth inning saw both teams score, and provided a pair of Dodgers highlights. First was this Bellinger home run, a no-doubter well into the right field seats for the first run of the game.

In the bottom of the frame, the Padres tied the game on an RBI single by Ryan Schimpf, but Puig kept San Diego out of a big inning with a howitzer throw on the fly to third base to erase Yangervis Solarte.

For Schimpf, one of the most unique players in baseball, that was just his fifth single of the season. Three of those five singles have come against the Dodgers.

The middle innings

Bellinger’s eagerness cost the Dodgers in the fifth inning, when on a sacrifice bunt attempt he tried to get lead runner Erick Aybar at second base. Before the throw had a chance to be late, it was wild, and after ending up in center field, Aybar made it to third base, and scored easily on a sacrifice fly, giving the Padres the lead.

Both pitchers pitched into the sixth despite fighting it for a good portion of the night. Chacin had a 32-pitch first inning but escaped unscathed, while Maeda had three different four-pitch walks. Maeda was able to escape some damage thanks to eight strikeouts in his five-plus innings, including six in a row in the second and third innings.

The bottom of the sixth had designs on being a big inning for the Padres, but it was also a quirky inning. Three different Dodgers pitchers — Maeda, Luis Avilan, and Sergio Romo — faced six Padres batters, and none of the first five put the ball in play. After two strikeouts and three walks, Erick Aybar lined out to a diving Justin Turner at third base, on the 37th and final pitch of the inning.

Notes

Puig’s stolen base in the eighth inning was his third of the season, which is tops on the Dodgers.

Yasmani Grandal threw out Jabari Blash trying to steal second base in the seventh inning, preventing the Padres from getting what at the time would have been the tying run in scoring position. Grandal has thrown out 7-of-15 (46.7%) of would-be base stealers this season.

After pitching the seventh inning, Pedro Baez got a rare plate appearance in the eighth inning, just the second of his career. The former minor league third baseman struck out. Baez faced two batters in the eighth inning and got one out.

Josh Fields got the last out of the eighth inning. He entered in a 4-2 game with the tying run at the plate. After the Dodgers scored four in the ninth, there was no need for Kenley Jansen, so Fields finished the game. But since Fields entered in a save situation himself, then finished the game, he picked up the save, the first Dodgers pitcher other than Jansen to get a regular season save since Chris Hatcher on Oct. 4, 2015, the final day of that season.

Up next

The Dodgers shuffled their rotation a bit for the rest of the series, and now Clayton Kershaw will pitch Saturday evening, a 5:40 p.m. PT start in San Diego. The Padres will send Clayton Richard to the mound, making the middle game of the series just the second battle between these Claytons, and the first since July 13, 2012.

With the Dodgers playing the Padres, it gives us a chance to see Ryan Schimpf, who is one of the most unique players in baseball. So far in 2017, he has doubled down on his distinctness.

Schmipf bats fifth on Friday, playing third base for the Padres.

In 2016, Schmipf had just 60 hits in 330 plate appearances, yet produced a 131 OPS+ in 89 games, hitting .217/.336/.533. Of those 60 hits, 20 were home runs and 42 were extra-base hits.

No other player has had 70% of their hits as extra-base hits in at least 200 plate appearances in a season. Barry Bonds came the closest, with 68.6% when he hit 73 home runs in 2001.

This season, Schimpf is just 12-for-84 (.143). But he’s also walked 20 times and driven in 14 runs in 27 games, hitting .143/.302/.405. Of his 12 hits, eight are for extra bases, including seven home runs. That’s 66.7% of his hits for extra bases.

Schmipf homered against Clayton Kershaw on opening day this season, and was 3-for-15 in that opening series at Dodger Stadium. Two of his four singles this season have been hit against the Dodgers.

Joc Pederson is back in the lineup for the Dodgers, batting sixth and playing center field in his first day back off the disabled list.

Cody Bellinger shifts to first base for the short term, with Adrian Gonzalez getting placed on the disabled list earlier on Friday.
LOS ANGELES — Adrian Gonzalez was placed on the 10-day disabled list on Friday with right elbow soreness, the first time the Dodgers first baseman has been placed on the DL in his major league career.

The move made room for the activation of Joc Pederson from the disabled list, after missing 10 games with a groin strain.

Gonzalez is hitting .255/.327/.309 with no home runs. five doubles, and 11 RBI in 29 games this season. He missed over two weeks during spring training with elbow tendinitis, and is also dealing with a herniated disc in his back.

The club has been trying to manage Gonzalez’s health all season.

“He’s not 100%,” manager Dave Roberts said Tuesday. “With that right forearm area, and the back, you’re talking about torque, you’re talking about extension. When those are compromised, it’s tough to be consistent.”

Gonzalez was the only Dodger to play in all 29 games this season, including 23 starts. He has been one of the most durable players in the majors since his first full season in 2006, averaging 159 games played and 154 starts in the last 11 years.

“With a player like Adrian, for a guy who’s never been on the disabled list for his entire career, it says a lot about the character and the will to want to post,” Roberts said Tuesday. “In the conversations I’ve had with him, he feels like he can still go out there. I have to continue to count on that, but we’ll see.”

The move of Gonzalez to the disabled list opens the door for an elongated major league stint for Cody Bellinger, the Dodgers top prospect. Bellinger had a productive first nine games, hitting .303/.361/.576 with two home runs.

The Dodgers will try for their first road series win of 2017 this weekend, facing the Padres for three games, beginning Friday night at Petco Park.

So far this season the Dodgers have dropped three road series — losing to of three games in Denver, Chicago, and Phoenix — and split another (in San Francisco), and are just 5-8 on the road.

The club was 5-4 at Petco Park last season, but that included the Padres winning the final two series after the Dodgers outscored them 25-0 in a season-opening sweep in 2016.

Dating back to last season, the Dodgers have gone seven road series without winning one, though there are two four-game splits in there. The Dodgers won two of three games at Yankee Stadium last Sept. 12-14, and have since gone 8-15 away from home.

The Dodgers are averaging just 3.38 runs per game this season on the road.

Friday also marks a stretch of 17 straight days with a game, and 33 games in the next 34 days. The 17-day stretch is the second-longest of the season, behind only the 20-game stretch on the schedule from June 13 to July 2.

Kenta Maeda gets the start in Friday’s opener for the Dodgers. Last year he was 10-5 with a 3.10 ERA in 18 starts against the National League West, including 2-1 with a 3.27 ERA against the Padres, with 27 strikeouts and two walks in four starts.

In 2017, Maeda is 1-2 with an 8.05 ERA against the NL West, which included his first four starts of the season, Maeda lost to the Padres on Apr. 4 in Los Angeles, allowing three runs in five innings.

The Dodgers hit the road for a quick three-game road trip beginning Friday night against the Padres at Petco Park in San Diego. Here is a look at the probable starting pitchers for the weekend.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Kenta Maeda will start the opener for the Dodgers, looking to build off his strong seven innings last Friday against the Phillies. Friday will be Maeda’s second start on six days rest this season; in his other such start, he allowed four home runs in Arizona on Apr. 22.

Jhoulys Chacin has settled down since the Dodgers tattooed him for nine runs on opening day. The right-hander posted a 3.82 ERA in his last five starts, with 25 strikeouts and 10 walks in 30⅔ innings.

Saturday, 5:40 p.m. (SportsNet LA)

Brandon McCarthy makes his first start in San Diego since Apr. 26, 2015, when he tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, causing him to miss nearly 15 months after Tommy John surgery.

Clayton Richard is the lone left-hander the Dodgers will face in this series. Since owning the Dodgers with eight scoreless innings on Apr. 4, Richard has a 5.53 ERA in five starts, with 18 strikeouts and nine walks in 27⅔ innings.

Sunday, 1:40 p.m. (SportsNet LA, KTLA)

Clayton Kershaw hasn’t pitched in San Diego since opening day in 2016, and his 11 career starts at Petco Park are his fewest at any National League West ballpark — he has started 18 times each at AT&T Park and Coors Field, and 12 times at Chase Field. In San Diego, Kershaw has a 1.92 ERA.

Trevor Cahill has 37 strikeouts in 30 innings this season, and at Petco Park is 2-0 in two starts, allowing two total runs (one earned) for a 0.69 ERA to go with 13 strikeouts and just one walk.
