The Dodgers continue to play in San Francisco like they are wearing shoes on the wrong feet, the latest misstep a 8-4 defeat at the hands of the Giants on Monday night at AT&T Park.

The game was tied at 1-1 in the fourth inning, because most Dodgers-Giants games are close affairs. Three straight hits, including a double by Brandon Crawford off the glove of fill-in first baseman Chase Utley, gave the Giants a go-ahead run.

Then, Eduardo Nunez grounded a ball up the middle that was fielded on the outfield grass by shortstop Corey Seager. It was good enough to score one run, and Crawford kept running as Seager threw toward home.

Starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, seeing Nunez stray off first base in front of him, cut the ball off, not realizing Crawford was a dead duck behind him. By the time McCarthy realize, he twirled toward home, then completed the 360 back toward second base just in time to make a throw too late to even get Nunez at second (in fairness to McCarthy, there was nobody yet at the bag to receive said throw had it been on time).

Before the Yakety Sax soundtrack could be stopped, Nunez picked McCarthy’s pocket and stole third base, then scored easily on a sacrifice fly.

All of a sudden it was 5-1 and the Dodgers were too stunned to realize they also weren’t getting anything on offense against Matt Cain. Again.

Cain kept the Dodgers off balance all night, allowing one run in 6⅔ innings, with five strikeouts and three walks. Cain has allowed all of one run in 12 innings this year against the Dodgers, and against everybody else has a 5.46 ERA.

After only reaching 90 pitches once this season, Cain was allowed to pitch the seventh inning on Monday even with 98 pitches through six. He recorded two outs in the seventh, and his 112 pitches were his most in a start since Apr. 12, 2014.

Adding to his night, Cain singled with two outs in the sixth inning, ending McCarthy’s night.

Much like their opener at Coors Field, a 10-0 deficit turned into a 10-7 loss, the Dodgers entered the ninth on Monday down 8-1 but rallied for a pair of runs against a pair of pitchers, forcing Bruce Bochy to call on acting closer Derek Law in a game he didn’t think he would have to pitch.

A passed ball brought home another run to make the score 8-4, but that’s where it ended, with Law recording the final two outs.

The Dodgers have lost 19 of their last 25 games in San Francisco.

Up next

Rich Hill gets the start on Tuesday night, with the main question of how will the Dodgers make roster room for him. The Giants will also go with a left-hander, with Ty Blach starting the middle game of the series, another 7:15 p.m. PT start.

Roberts mentioned on Saturday that Forsythe would likely be the designated hitter on Tuesday, per David Vassegh of Dodger Talk.

The Quakes open a homestead on Tuesday night against Lake Elsinore.

Gonzalez was placed on the DL on May 5 with right elbow soreness, and has also dealt with a sore back. Manager Dave Roberts described the rehab plan for Gonzalez as a “slow program” last week, but then one day later with Andrew Toles now out for the year, plans changed.

“The slow program got a little quicker. But that’s kind of what we said. We said we’ll take it slow, take the calendar out of it. But if some unforeseen injury or circumstance takes place, then we’ll speed it up,” Roberts said last week. “I’ve talked to Adrian, and he’s going to ramp it up.”

Forsythe suffered a fracture on his right big toe on Apr. 18, but has also been dealing with right hamstring tightness, first experienced in a game on Apr. 15. Forsythe started a rehab assignment previously with Rancho Cucamonga, but cut it short after two games, feeling more tightness in his hamstring on May 3.

Rotation order

Roberts also told reporters in San Francisco on Monday his rotation plans for the weekend, when the Marlins come to Dodger Stadium for four games.

Hyun-jin Ryu was pushed back a few days after allowing 10 runs on Thursday in Colorado. The Saturday and Sunday rotation slots are still not yet announced, and the Dodgers still have a lot to sort out this week.

Rich Hill will be activated form the DL on Tuesday and will need a corresponding move, and the earliest Kenta Maeda can be activated from his DL respite is Sunday.
McCarthy activated to start on the mound Monday night

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers on Monday activated Brandon McCarthy to start the series opener against the Giants, and to make room on the roster optioned outfielder Brett Eibner to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Eibner was called up just last Wednesday, one day after outfielder Andrew Toles tore his ACL. In Eibner’s second stint in the majors this season he was 2-for-5 with a home run and a walk in two games.

The home run on Saturday at Coors Field was Eibner’s first home run as a Dodger.

So far this season, Eibner is 3-for-10 (.300) with a home run and a walk in five games with the Dodgers, scoring twice and driving in two. Eibner has started three games in the majors this season, one game in each of the three outfield positions.

McCarthy is 3-0 with a 3.10 ERA in five starts this season, with 25 strikeouts and nine walks in 29 innings. He last pitched in a game on Apr. 29.

With this roster move, the Dodgers have 13 pitchers and 12 position players on the active roster.

Kiké Hernandez starts at 3B vs. SF

Justin Turner gets a rare day off in the Dodgers’ series opener on Monday night against the Giants at AT&T Park in San Francisco.

Turner had two hits and an RBI in each of the last two games over the weekend at Coors Field in Denver, but in May is hitting just .262/.373/.286 with one double and five walks in 12 games.

Turner started each of the last 13 games for the Dodgers. Only Cody Bellinger had a longer streak of active starts on the team heading into Monday. The third baseman has played in 36 of the club’s 38 games this season, including 34 starts, the latter good for third on the team.

Kiké Hernandez gets the start at third base in place of Turner on Monday, his second start at the position this season.

Yasmani Grandal, with 14 hits in his last 23 at-bats, moves into Turner’s third slot in the batting order in the series opener. It’s just his sixth career start batting third, and first since joining the Dodgers.

SF roster move

The Giants made a move before the series, placing outfielder Hunter Pence on the disabled list with a strained left hamstring. The club called up Mac Williamson to take his place on the roster.

Pence homered against Clayton Kershaw on May 1 at Dodger Stadium, his first career extra-base hit against the lefty in 70 plate appearances. But since that home run Pence was 7-for-41 (.171) with a home run, no walks, and 10 strikeouts.

The Dodgers are in San Francisco for a second time this season, battling the Giants for three games beginning Monday night at AT&T Park.

So far this season, the Dodgers and Giants have alternated wins in every other game, with San Francisco holding a 4-3 advantage in the season series. The Giants also won the last game, so if the pattern holds the Dodgers would have their first series win at AT&T Park since Sept. 12-14, 2014.

The Giants have been mostly terrible this season, sitting at 15-24 with the second-worst run differential (-61) in the National League. But they enter Monday as winners of three straight games.

Dueling catchers

Buster Posey has been especially hot for the Giants in May, hitting .395/.480/.791 with five home runs in 50 plate appearances, with five walks and just two strikeouts. He hit just one home run in April. Four of those May home runs came in five starts last week, including a walk-off home run on Friday after catching 17 innings against the Reds.

Yasmani Grandal has been on fire in May as well, hitting .429/.459/.629 with a home run and four doubles, and two walks. His last game of April was a three-hit game, giving him four three-hit games in his last nine starts, raising his season line from .194/.303/.373 to .292/.367/.481 in just over two weeks.

Grandal carries an eight-game hitting streak into Monday’s game, and has 14 hits in his last 23 at-bats.

Welcome back

Cody Bellinger is now a grizzled veteran compared to his last trip to AT&T Park, where he played his first three major league games, from Apr. 25-27. Bellinger was 1-for-10 with two walks in those three games, with a cue-shot infield single up the third base line against the shift as his only hit.

Since then, he hasn’t had two straight games without a hit. Bellinger has reached base by hit or walk in nine straight games, and in 14 of his last 15 games.

For starters

Bellinger missed Matt Cain in that first series against the Giants. Cain pitched the series opener on Apr. 24, one day before Bellinger’s call up, and shut the Dodgers down with six scoreless innings.

Believe it or not, this is Brandon McCarthy ‘s first start against the Giants since joining the Dodgers. McCarthy did pitch once against San Francisco last season, but it was in relief in the series opener in the season’s final weekend. McCarthy faced six batters and did not record an out. They all scored.

So long, NL West

The Dodgers are 15-14 against their own division this season, with 29 of their first 38 games coming against the National League West. This series will make 32 of their first 41 games, but then the Dodgers have a stretch of 33 straight games outside of the division.

After this series against the Giants, the Dodgers won’t play a National League West team until June 23, when they host the Rockies at Dodger Stadium.

Monday, 7:15 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Brandon McCarthy will see his first game action since Apr. 29 when he is activated off the disabled list to start Monday’s series opener. He’s coming off a strong April that saw him strike out 25 and walk nine in 29 innings while posting a 3.10 ERA.

Matt Cain pitched six scoreless innings against the Dodgers in San Francisco on Apr. 24. He had one blow-up start this month, allowing nine runs to Cincinnati on May 5, but has otherwise allowed three or fewer runs in five of his last six starts.

Wednesday, 12:45 p.m. (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

If there is such a thing as a quiet 6-2, 2.43 ERA start, Clayton Kershaw has found it. Maybe it’s because his ERA for a season hasn’t been that high since posting a 2.53 mark in 2012.

The day game getaway day finale is a great pitching matchup, with Johnny Cueto pitching for the Giants. These two matched up on May 1 at Dodger Stadium, with the Giants prevailing.
