Puig is appealing the suspension

LOS ANGELES — Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig was suspended one game for giving the double middle finger to some fans on Tuesday at Progressive Field in Cleveland, MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre announced on Wednesday.

Puig was also fined an undisclosed amount, and is appealing the suspension. He is starting in right field, batting ninth for the Dodgers on Wednesday.

Puig hit a two-run home run in the second inning on Tuesday, and on his way back to the dugout responded to some fans who had been heckling him during the game.

There aren’t a ton of comparable incidents to measure Puig’s punishment. But in April 2016, Tigers outfielder Tyler Collins flipped off home fans and was not suspended by MLB. Though he only used one finger, and not two.

Puig addressed the incident after Tuesday’s game, and didn’t seem to be expecting the suspension.

It was the Cody Bellinger show on Tuesday night in Cleveland as the rookie sensation assaulted Indians’ relief pitching, launching two homers. A solo shot leading off the eighth and a three-run job in the ninth gave the Dodgers a 7-5 victory.

It was the third straight game in which the Dodgers took the lead in the eighth inning or later. The win — the Dodgers fifth straight — also moves the Dodgers back into a first-place tie with the Rockies.

Bellinger now has a whopping 17 homers to go along with 39 RBIs on the season. No Dodger has ever had as many homers or runs batted in as Bellinger has now in their first 45 career games.

Both homers came against a pair of tough lefties in Andrew Miller and Boone Logan. Those two Cleveland relievers don’t give up the long ball very often.

The 21-year-old is also the first player — dating back to at least 1913 — with four multi-homer games in their first 45 games.

Yasiel Puig provided an early lead for the Dodgers in the second inning with a two-run blast. Batting in the ninth spot in the lineup, Puig went 2-for-4 on the night.

Clayton Kershaw was certainly appreciative of the effort, picking up his ninth victory of the season. The Dodger lefty tossed seven solid innings, allowing a pair of runs over seven innings on six hits, walking two while striking out four.

Tuesday was the fourth straight start in which Kershaw has allowed a home run, tying his career-high. It was of the solo variety to Cleveland catcher Roberto Perez in the fifth. It was also the 13th homer Kershaw has allowed in 2017, getting closer to his career-high of 16 in a season back in 2012.

Cleveland made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth with a three-run homer off Chris Hatcher. But the Dodgers turned to Kenley Jansen who was able to lock down the final out for the win.

Up next

The Dodgers will send Brandon McCarthy (5-3, 3.28) to the mound to square off with Corey Kluber (5-2, 4.38).

Yasiel Puig crushed a two-run homer in the second inning Tuesday to give the Dodgers an early 2-0 lead over the Indians. The stunning part came after the trot around the bases when Puig gave somebody in the crowd a double shot of the middle finger.

LHP has allowed 6 runs in last 6 starts in AL parks

The Dodgers are the last team in baseball to begin interleague play in 2017, and they start things off with the reigning American League pennant winners, facing the Indians for three games at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

After no interleague games in the first 64 games of the year, the Dodgers play 20 of their next 58 games against American League foes.

This is just the fourth time the Dodgers and Indians have met in interleague play, and the first since 2014. It is just the second time the clubs have met in Cleveland. The Dodgers swept a three-game series here from June 13-15, 2003.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts played in all three games that series, starting twice in center field. He was 2-for-9 with two walks — a .364 on-base percentage — and a stolen base, and scored three runs.

Clayton Kershaw starts the opener, putting the Dodgers’ best foot forward. The left-hander is 12-4 with a 2.22 ERA in 28 career starts with 208 starts in 190⅓ innings. Since the start of 2013, Kershaw has made six starts in American League parks and allowed six total runs, posting a 1.07 ERA with 48 strikeouts and five walks in 42 innings.

But the Dodgers have won only four of those six games.

Trevor Bauer starts for Cleveland, sporting an eye-popping 6.10 ERA in his 12 starts this season. He hasn’t quite been that bad, with 76 strikeouts in 62 innings and a FIP (4.17) nearly two runs lower.

Both bullpens figure to loom large in this series, with the Dodgers and Indians boasting arguably the two best relief units in the game. Cleveland is the only major league team with a better bullpen ERA (2.36) and FIP (2.95) than the Dodgers (2.68 ERA, 2.98 FIP), and LA (29.1%) and Cleveland (28.0%) rank second and third, respectively in relief strikeout rate, trailing only the Astros (31.1%).

Corey Kluber missed a month with a lower back strain, but since returning from the disabled list has 18 strikeouts in 12 innings, winning both of his starts with a 1.50 ERA.
