In honor of the start of golf’s U.S. Open on Thursday, Rich Hill had a subpar performance in the finale of a three-game series against the Indians. Cleveland put a hurting on Hill and Ross Stripling in an 12-5 win over the Dodgers to stave off a sweep on getaway day at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

Things got wonky very early for Hill, who allowed three singles and hit a batter before recording an out in the first inning. A walk and a single with two outs made it a three-run opening frame, giving Cleveland their first lead of the series.

Hill allowed two more runs in the second inning, including a double by Jose Ramirez and a home run by Edwin Encarnacion.

Down 5-0, the Dodgers got on the board with a solo home run by Cody Bellinger in the fourth inning, his fifth home run in the last four games. Bellinger’s 18 home runs are the most by a Dodger through 67 team games since Matt Kemp hit 20 in 2011, a feat even more impressive since Bellinger was not called up until the Dodgers’ 21st game in 2017.

Doubles by Joc Pederson and Yasiel Puig cut into the lead in the fifth, then a two-run home run by Chris Taylor brought the Dodgers within 5-4, stirring thoughts of more late runs in this series by Los Angeles.

But that’s when everything fell apart for the Dodgers.

Hill, who needed 62 pitches to get through those first two innings, fought his way into the fifth, which started with a walk and a single, ending his day.

Stripling was brought in, and immediately allowed a three-run home run to pinch hitter Lonnie Chisenhall, giving Cleveland a four-run advantage.

Two of those runs were charged to Hill, who allowed seven runs in four-plus innings on Thursday. Hill has been nothing like the pitcher he was in 2016 this season, and through eight starts — none of which have lasted beyond five innings — the left-hander sports a 5.14 ERA and a 5.30 FIP, with 23 walks in 35 innings.

After getting the first two outs of the sixth inning, things went south for Stripling, who loaded the bases with two singles and a walk. Chisenhall continued his tormenting of Stripling with a two-run single, breaking the game open.

Another RBI single by Roberto Perez ended Stripling’s day.

Six of the Indians’ 12 runs were scored with two outs.

The 12 runs allowed by the Dodgers were one shy of their season high, which came on Apr. 21 in Arizona.

Up next

The Dodgers move 250 miles southwest in Ohio to face the Reds for a weekend series in Cincinnati, beginning Friday night. Alex Wood starts the series opener, facing off against Tim Adleman.

Thursday particulars

Home runs: Cody Bellinger (18), Chris Taylor (8); Edwin Encarnacion (13), Lonnie Chisenhall (8), Erik Gonzalez (1)

The Dodgers go for a second straight sweep, sending Rich Hill to the mound in the morning series finale against the Indians on getaway day on Thursday at Progressive Field in Cleveland.

It had been 14 years since the Dodgers last visited Cleveland, but they picked up right where they left off. The Dodgers swept a three-game series here in 2003, and have won the first two games of this series as well.

The games have been close, with a pair of two-run victories this season, and two one-run wins and a three-run triumph back in 2003.

So far against the Indians, the Dodgers have scored four total runs in the first seven innings of the first two games, and nine runs in the eighth and ninth innings combined.

During the Dodgers’ six-game winning streak, the team has scored 17 of their 36 runs in the eighth or ninth innings.

Trying to keep Cleveland at bay early in the series finale is Rich Hill, who faces an American League team for the first time since getting traded last Aug. 1 from the Athletics to the Dodgers. Before his final, five-pitch, blister-shortened start for the A’s on July 17, 2016, Hill pitched six consecutive quality starts for Oakland against AL opponents.

This year, Hill has allowed one run in five innings in two of his three road starts.

Rather than wait until the eighth inning on Thursday, the Dodgers will try to tally some early runs against Josh Tomlin, who has a 5.73 ERA in 12 starts.

Tomlin hasn’t walked a batter in any of his last five starts, but also sports a 5.53 ERA during that span, going 1-4 with five home runs allowed in 27⅔ innings.

The Dodgers are 14-6 in day games in 2017.

The Dodgers make their first trip to Cleveland since 2003 in starting up an interleague series with the Indians on Tuesday night. Here is a look at the pitching schedule for the three-game series.

Tuesday, 4:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA, Twitter)

Clayton Kershaw has faced the Indians just once — a no-decision at home, in 2008, his sixth career start — but has never pitched in Cleveland. Progressive Field will be his 27th career ballpark.

Former UCLA star Trevor Bauer has faced the Dodgers twice in his career, picking up his first major league win with the Diamondbacks in 2012 and earning a no-decision at Dodger Stadium in 2014 with Cleveland.

Wednesday, 4:10 p.m. (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Brandon McCarthy has allowed five total runs in his last four starts, with a 1.96 ERA, 21 strikeouts and five walks in 23 innings. But he is also 2-2 during that span thanks to one total run scored by the Dodgers in his last two starts.

Corey Kluber missed a month with a lower back strain, but since returning from the disabled list has 18 strikeouts in 12 innings, winning both of his starts with a 1.50 ERA.

Thursday, 9:10 a.m. (SportsNet LA, MLB Network)

Rich Hill has allowed one run in five innings in four of his seven starts this season. Josh Tomlin has 44 strikeouts against only four walks this season, but also has a 5.73 ERA in 12 starts, with opposing hitters .314/.326/.487 against him.
