Dodgers power overflows into July with 3 more HR

Rich Hill continued his redemption quest, controlling the Padres both on the mound and at the plate in the Dodgers’ 8-0 win at Petco Park on Saturday night in San Diego.

Hill unleashed his revised delivery on San Diego, and the improved command he talked about on Monday was in full effect on Saturday. Hill struck out 11 in his seven scoreless innings, allowing only four hits and a walk.

The 11 strikeouts matched a career high for Hill, a number he hadn’t reached since June 7, 2007 with the Cubs.

After failing to reach the sixth inning in any of his first nine starts, Hill has lasted seven innings in back-to-back starts.

But that wasn’t all! Hill grounded a two-out single through the infield in the fourth inning, bringing home the Dodgers’ second run. The single snapped an 0-for-30 skid for Hill — including 0-for-14 in 2017 — that dated back to June 19, 2009.

For good measure, Hill singled again in the sixth inning, giving him the first two-hit game of his career.

Hill wasn’t alone on the comeback trail in sunny San Diego.

Logan Forsythe beat out an infield single in the first inning to drive in the Dodgers’ first run, then he doubled and scored in the fourth inning. He added another double in the fifth inning, then singled in the seventh.

Forsythe, who was 4-for-4 with a walk on Friday, is the first Dodger with back-to-back four-hit games since Andre Ethier on Aug. 24-25, 2012. He struck out in the eighth inning to end an impressive streak.

Forsythe had hits in eight consecutive at-bats, two shy of the club record shared by Ethier. Forsythe also reached base in nine consecutive plate appearances, five shy of Pedro Guerrero’s franchise record set from July 23-26, 1985.

The veteran infielder came into the series on Friday night hitting .208/.333/.282 on the season. He is now hitting .247/.363/.329.

It took a little while for the Dodgers to get to Dillon Overton, put the third time through the order proved to be the charm. That’s when Corey Seager and Justin Turner hit back-to-back home runs against Overton, who allowed 14 home runs in 225 plate appearances between the majors and minors this season before Saturday.

Slam dancing

But the Dodgers weren’t done after Overton departed. Chris Taylor hit a grand slam against Craig Stammen in the seventh inning, doubling the Dodgers’ lead.

It was the third grand slam of the season for Taylor, tying a Dodgers franchise record. Taylor, who was 2-for-4 with a walk on the night, joined Kal Daniels (1990), Mike Piazza (1998), Adrian Beltre (2004), and Matt Kemp (2009) in the three-slam club.

Taylor has 11 career home runs — 10 this season — and four are grand slams.

Power surge

After setting a franchise record with 53 home runs in June, the Dodgers hit three more home runs on Saturday, the first day of July. The Dodgers have hit three or more home runs 17 times this season, 11 of which have come in their last 20 games.

The Dodgers are 16-1 when hitting three or more home runs in 2017.

Up next

The Dodgers go for a series sweep on Sunday afternoon, sending Kenta Maeda to the mound for the 1:40 p.m. PT finale. The Padres will counter with opening day starter Jhoulys Chacin.

Saturday particulars

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers made a roster move of their own before Saturday’s game against the Padres, recalling relief pitcher Josh Fields from Triple-A Oklahoma City and sending utility man Mike Freeman down to Triple-A.

Fields is one of eight Dodgers relievers to pitch in at least 20 games this season, though he was optioned to Oklahoma City on June 19 after a stretch of giving up home runs in four of five appearances.

On the season, Fields has a 3.00 ERA and 4.55 FIP in 27 games, with 32 strikeouts and eight walks in 27 innings. After getting sent down, Fields pitched three scoreless innings in three appearances, allowing just one hit with three strikeouts. He last pitched on Thursday, throwing 15 pitches in one inning.

Freeman was claimed off waivers from the Mariners on May 26. In four games with the Dodgers, he was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts. The lefty-batting Freeman appeared three times as a pinch hitter, and played the final four innings at third base in Friday’s game.

With this transaction, the Dodgers are back to 13 pitchers and 12 position players on the 25-man roster.

Roberts, Green, and Alex Wood also fined

LOS ANGELES — Dodgers manager Dave Roberts was suspended one game for his actions during an argument with Padres skipper Andy Green during Friday night’s series opener at Petco Park.

Roberts, who was also fined an undisclosed amount, will serve the suspension tonight.

Things got heated when Alex Wood was unhappy with San Diego’s a Jose Pirela relaying location to batters from second base in the first inning. According to a pool report after the game, home plate umpire Greg Gibson said second base umpire D.J. Reyburn told him he heard Wood tell Pirela, “I’m going to f—king drill you.”

This prompted warnings for both benches between innings, and after both managers went to home plate for further explanation, Roberts was unhappy with what Green was saying. As umpires were separating the two managers, Roberts broke free and charged at Green, bumping him.

Two different times after the benches-clearing incident was dying down, Roberts was seen yelling across to Green in the Padres dugout, pointing at him and shouting, “You and me.”

That extracurricular effort got Roberts suspended for a game. Green was fined an undisclosed amount, as was Wood.

Dodgers bench coach Bob Geren will manage the Dodgers on Saturday night.

Corey Seager is back in the lineup on Saturday night after a planned off day Friday, coming back from a right hamstring strain that caused him to miss six of the last seven games. Seager strengthens a Dodgers lineup that has had their way with the Padres in 2017.

Seager, who made his major league debut at Petco Park in 2015, is 7-for-25 (.280) with two doubles and a home run against the Padres this year, but there have been several other Dodgers who have feasted off San Diego pitching.

Justin Turner, who homered and went 3-for-3 on Friday night, is 12-for-23 (.522) with three doubles, a home run, three walks, and a hit by pitch this season against San Diego.

Cody Bellinger has only played three games against the Padres — all in San Diego — and is 6-for-13 (.462) with three home runs and nine RBI against them.

Yasiel Puig also has three home runs against San Diego, and it 9-for-25 (.360) with five walks against them.

Austin Barnes went off on Friday with two home runs and seven RBI, and is 4-for-13 (.308) with two walks against the Padres this season.

Chris Taylor is 4-for-9 (.444) with four walks (.615 on-base percentage) against San Diego. Logan Forsythe is 7-for-18 (.389) with five walks (.522 OBP).

All except for Puig are in the lineup on Saturday night for the Dodgers, and he’s been dealing with hamstring and knee soreness of late. Kiké Hernandez gets the call in right field on Saturday.

Padres roster move

San Diego recalled Dillon Overton from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday night. Right-handed reliever Jose Valdez was optioned to Triple-A, one night after pitching 1⅔ innings in relief, and allowing Barnes’ three-run home run in the sixth inning.

After setting franchise records in June, the Dodgers look for that to carry over into July as they battle the Padres on Saturday night at Petco Park in San Diego.

Sure, the game will be enticing enough, with Rich Hill on the mound against Dillon Overton for the Padres. But the fun might start before the game even starts, like when lineup cards are exchanged at home plate.

Though, Dave Roberts and Andy Green have probably cooled off considerably after Friday night’s kerfuffle.

The offense got all the headlines in June, but the Dodgers did a great job of preventing runs as well. The Dodgers allowed 97 runs in June — 3.46 per game — the only team to allow fewer than 101 runs in the month. On the season, the Dodgers have allowed only 3.43 runs per game, half a run fewer than any other team in baseball.

Hill seems ready to rejoin the run prevention parade, especially after finding his command thanks to a revised delivery unleashed in his last start. Hill allowed three runs and lost on Monday night, but lasted seven innings and was pounding the strike zone all night, striking out seven.

“[I] felt more like myself than any game I have pitched all year,” Hill said Monday night. “The ball came out of my hand the way I want to.”

The Dodgers have seen success on all sides against the Padres this year. San Diego has scored just 2.71 runs per game against the Dodgers this season, and never more than four runs in any of their seven meetings, six won by Los Angeles.

On offense, the Dodgers have scored 7.86 runs per game against the Padres in 2017, including four games double-digit runs and another eight-run contest.

That offense gets to face the 25-year-old left-hander Overton, who will be called up from Triple-A El Paso to start Saturday night for the Padres. Claimed off waivers from the Mariners on June 19 by San Diego, Overton has been lit up like a Christmas tree in 2017. In 17 games between Triple-A and the majors this year, opposing batters are hitting .290/.333/.560 against Overton, with 14 home runs in 225 plate appearances.

Including Friday night’s win, the Dodgers are 15-9 when facing left-handed starting pitchers this season, including five straight wins and 12 wins in their last 14 such games.

The Dodgers were dead last in the majors across the board against lefties in 2016, hitting .213/.290/.332 with a 72 wRC+.

This season, the club is hitting .258/.346/.454 against southpaws, third in OPS (.800) and third in wRC+ (113).
