Dodgers winning streak ends at nine games, Bellinger becomes the youngest Dodger to hit 30 home runs

Tyler Flowers hit a two-out two-run homer off Pedro Baez and that provided the difference in the Braves 5-3 win over the Dodgers on Wednesday night at SunTrust Park.

The loss ended the Dodgers nine-game winning streak as the Braves are now the two-time winning streak enders against the Dodgers this season. The Braves are also the only team to beat the Dodgers since July 3rd, as the Dodgers are 3-3 against the Braves and 17-0 against everyone else.

After the Braves tied the game in fifth inning, it became a battle of the bullpens and the Braves won with Rex Brothers getting the win and Arodys Vizcaino got his third save.

The Dodgers took a lead which for the last 53 times they did that, they won, when Cody Bellinger homered in the second. However, the lead was short-lived when Danny Santana hit a two-run homer in the bottom of that inning.

The Dodgers would score single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to re-take the lead but then a bobble by Corey Seager may have cost the Dodgers a double play in the bottom of the fifth. Freddie Freeman would drive home that runner on a base hit and the game would be tied at three until the eighth.

Both starting pitchers had no decisions

Brock Stewart pitched four innings and gave up his first earned runs of the season when Danny Santana hit a two-run homer off him in the second inning. Stewart gave up those two runs, three hits, and three walks in four innings.

Julio Teheran pitched five innings and gave up three runs and four hits while striking out four.

Another Dodger record for Cody Bellinger

At age 22, Bellinger became the youngest Dodger to hit 30 home runs in a season. Duke Snider had been the youngest at 23 when he 31 home runs for the 1950 Brooklyn Dodgers. Mike Piazza was 24 when he set the all-time Dodger rookie record with 35 home runs in 1993.

Up next

The Dodgers and Braves play their season series finale and this one is for a series win. A pair of left-handers, Alex Wood against Sean Newcomb, will face off starting at 4:35 p.m.

Tuesday particulars

The Los Angeles Dodgers, in search of their tenth win in a row, send Brock Stewart to the mound to face the Atlanta Braves in the middle game of their three-game series.

This is Stewart’s second start of the season. One week ago today the rookie right-hander lasted only 3 2⁄3 innings against the Minnesota Twins but was partly undone by the Dodgers defense as all five runs he allowed were unearned. The Dodgers scored in five of the last six innings to win that game 6-5.

Justin Turner gets the night off while Logan Forsythe mans the hot corner; Chase Utley starts at second base and leads off.

Newly acquired Yu Darvish was activated today and issued jersey number 21. He threw a bullpen session today to Austin Barnes with various coaches in attendance. Josh Ravin was optioned back to Oklahoma City to make space on the active roster.

Atlanta is reeling. Since winning two games to start their series in Los Angeles, they have lost nine games in their last ten tries. Julio Teheran toes the rubber attempting to reverse that. In his last start he was roughed up in Philadelphia for eight runs in 4 2⁄3 innings.

Brandon Phillips starts at third base for Atlanta. When he takes the field, it will mark his first time at the position in his 16 seasons in the major leagues.

The Dodgers begin a nine-game road trip in Atlanta, starting with a three-game series against the Braves, who were the last team to defeat the Dodgers, back on July 20 and 21. But this time they don’t have to face Jaime Garcia who’s been traded twice since. Here is a look at the starting pitching matchups for the midweek set.

Tuesday, 4:35 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Kenta Maeda takes the mound in the opener, sporting a 5.65 ERA on the road. He did not face Atlanta in Los Angeles. Righthander Lucas Sims makes his major-league debut for the Braves. The 23-year old was 7-4 in Triple-A Gwinnett, with a 3.75 ERA, striking out 10.3 batters per nine innings while walking only 2.8.

Wednesday, 4:35 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Brock Stewart makes his second start in place of Clayton Kershaw. He last only 3 2/3 innings in his other outing, although the Dodgers defense contributed to the five unearned runs he was charged with. Julio Teheran has struggled this year with an ERA above 5, a career-low strikeout per nine innings of 6.8 and a career-high BB/9 or 3.5.

Thursday, 4:35 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Alex Wood looks to avenge his only loss of the season in his return battle with Atlanta, to whom he allowed nine runs in a 4 2/3 innings start. in his last five starts, with 44 strikeouts and six walks in 31 innings. Lefthanded rookie Sean Newcomb makes his tenth start of the year and second versus the Dodgers. Nine days ago Newcomb made a quality start, allowing three runs in six innings for a no-decision in a game the Dodgers went on to win.
