SAN DIEGO — As the Dodgers get ready for Game 2 of their doubleheader against the Padres, they have set their starting rotation through their next series, too.

The Diamondbacks come to Los Angeles beginning Monday night for three games, and will face the same three starting pitchers they pasted in Phoenix earlier this week. Rich Hill, Hyun-jin Ryu, and Kenta Maeda will start for the Dodgers against Arizona, after allowing a combined 19 runs on 24 hits in just 10⅔ innings in the three games.

Arizona entered Saturday with a 4½-game lead over Colorado for the top wild card spot in the National League, and looms as a potential NLDS opponent for the Dodgers. Of the three pitchers the Dodgers plan to pitch against the Diamondbacks, only Hill is likely in the playoff starting rotation, but manager Dave Roberts downplayed any gamesmanship in selecting his pitchers for the series.

“It doesn’t matter. They just didn’t pitch well. We’re gonna be at home, and they will pitch better,” Roberts said. “We’re not concerned about the matchup.”

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks have split 16 games this season, but Los Angeles is 6-3 in games started by Clayton Kershaw, Yu Darvish, Alex Wood, and Hill.

Saturday is the fifth day of a 16-day stretch that sees the Dodgers playing 17 games. Roberts said the Dodgers plan to continue with a six-man rotation at least through the series against Arizona.

“As we get to the middle of September, we’ll lock in on five guys,” Roberts said.

Late rally for naught

SAN DIEGO — The Dodgers rallied to tie in the ninth, but Yangervis Solarte made it all for naught with a walk-off home run to give the Padres a 6-5 win in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Petco Park.

Pedro Baez faced two batters in the ninth inning. After allowing a loud out tracked down by Yasiel Puig in right center field, Solarte found a way to hit a ball Puig could not get to.

It was the third home run Baez has allowed since Aug. 1, after allowing four total home runs in the first four months of the season.

“His last outing was a good one. This wasn’t as sharp. But for what he’s done for us, my confidence doesn’t waiver,” manager Dave Roberts said. “We’ve just got to work through some things.”

Down two runs in the ninth inning and facing closer Brad Hand, Rob Segedin doubled and Justin Turner hit a pinch-hit home run to tie things up. It was the Dodgers’ fifth pinch-hit home run in 2017, and the second for Turner.

Turner now has 18 home runs on the season, giving the club six different players with at least 18 home runs. The Dodgers have never had more than five players hit 20 home runs in a season.

The Dodgers got three consecutive hits to open the first inning against Clayton Richard, meaning Saturday’s Clayton allowed more hits to the first three batters of the game than Friday’s Clayton did in six innings. And the Dodgers matched their Friday offensive output within four batters on Saturday.

The Dodgers were only able to cash in one run in the first, on a ground out by Cody Bellinger, who later homered to tie Mike Piazza’s franchise rookie record.

Richard lasted six, pitching a quality start with three runs allowed and four strikeouts.

Brock Stewart had his most effective start of the season, though he lasted just four innings. He allowed only a run on two hits and struck out five, but also walked four -- one intentional.

“We would have liked for him to go deeper. For me, it was getting behind hitters. It was the four walks in four innings, and not being able to put them away,” Roberts said. “There were some 0-2 pitches he couldn’t finish with the slider and changeup.”

Wilmer Font made his Dodgers debut with a scoreless fifth inning, but allowed two runs on two hits and two walks in the six, allowing the Padres to tie the score. It was the first major league appearance for Font since July 14, 2013 with the Rangers.

In all, Dodgers pitchers issued eight walks in the game, one shy of their season high set May 24 against the Cardinals.

One of those walks was in the seventh inning to Jose Pirela, who was cashed in on a triple by Wil Myers on a ball that ricocheted over a leaping O`Koyea Dickson, who then fell down in left field.

That was part of a two-run seventh inning against Josh Ravin that gave the Padres their first lead of the series.

Intent

Dickson started in left field in his major league debut, and was 0-for-4 at the plate. He was intentionally walked by Richard in the sixth inning, putting Dickson in select company. He is just the fourth Dodger dating back to at least 1913 to be intentionally walked in his major league debut, joining Chico Fernandez (1956), Dick Nen (1963), and Bellinger (Apr. 25).

Short hop

Logan Forsythe started at second base, but moved to shortstop in the eighth inning, his first time at the position all season. It was his 20th career game atthe position, but his first game there since Sept. 24, 2014 with the Rays.

Up next

The day is only half over, with Game 2 of the doubleheader scheduled for 7:10 p.m. PT Saturday night. Yu Darvish starts for the Dodgers, facing right-hander Jordan Lyles for San Diego.

35 home runs matches Mike Piazza’s 24-year-old mark

“Miracle upon miracle, he’s hit another one!”

Those were the words of Vin Scully on Oct. 3, 1993, when Mike Piazza capped his incredible rookie season with two home runs on the season’s final day. Piazza set the Dodgers franchise record with 35 home runs by a rookie on that day, a mark that stood for 24 years, until Cody Bellinger tied it on Saturday afternoon against the Padres in San Diego.

On his fourth day back from the disabled list after missing nine games with a right ankle sprain, Bellinger’s 35th home run came against Clayton Richard in the fourth inning, a solo shot to right center field.

Bellinger still has plenty of time left in the season to build on the record, with 31 games remaining in the season, and his current total is even more amazing given that he spent the first 20 games of the major league season in Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Almost from the jump, Bellinger started hitting, and he hasn’t really stopped, helping to fuel an absurd Dodgers surge from a 9-11 start to the season to their current 92-41 record, on pace for 112 wins.

Entering Saturday, the Dodgers were 77-23 in games Bellinger has started, and 15-18 when he has not.

Bellinger hasn’t let up since the Home Run Derby, either. After hitting 25 home runs in 70 games with a .619 slugging percentage before the All-Star break, he has 10 home runs and a .579 slugging percentage in 35 games since. In August, Bellinger has seven home runs in 20 games.

Bellinger has hit his 35 home runs in just 105 games. The only player in major league history with more home runs in their first 100 career games is Mark McGwire, with 37 home runs in 1986-87.

In addition to tying the Dodgers record, Bellinger is also closing in on the National League record for home runs by rookie. Only three NL rookies have ever hit more home runs than Bellinger — Wally Berger (1930) and Frank Robinson (1956) share the record at 38, with Albert Pujols (2001) close behind at 37.

McGwire owns the major league record for home runs by a rookie, hitting 49 in 1987 for the A’s.

SAN DIEGO -- The Dodgers on Saturday added a few more players to their September mix, recalling Brock Stewart promoting Wilmer Font from Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Stewart will start Game 1 of the doubleheader against the Padres on Saturday. He last pitched on Aug. 22 in Pittsburgh, then was optioned to the minors the next day. Stewart had to remain in the minors for 10 days before returning, and Friday was day 10.

Font was the Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Year, leading all of Triple-A with 178 strikeouts while posting a PCL-best 3.42 ERA and 1.109 WHIP in 25 starts. The secret to his success?

“Attacking the hitters, trusting my fastball, then trusting my secondary pitches after getting a first-pitch strike,” Font said.

The Dodgers signed the 27-year-old to a minor league deal this offseason. Font last pitched in the majors in 2013 with the Rangers. He will wear No. 62 with the Dodgers, and for now will pitch in relief.

The Dodgers added six players on Friday. Saturday’s moves put the active roster at 33 players.

To make room on the 40-man roster for Font, the Dodgers designated Jordan Jankowski for assignment. The club claimed the right-handed pitcher off waivers from the Astros on Aug. 20. In four relief appearances with Oklahoma City, Jankowski allowed four runs -- all on Friday night — on two hits and five walks in three innings, with two strikeouts.

Lineups

O`Koyea Dickson makes his major league debut in Game 1, starting in left field. Several regulars are resting in Game 1. Manager Dave Roberts said that likely only Yasiel Puig or Alex Verdugo would start both games on Saturday.

“It’s a combo of matchups and getting guys rest,” Roberts said. “To have guys play two games today doesn’t make a lot of sense.”

The best part about the lineup is that bench coach Bob Geren on his initial lineup card in the clubhouse had Font’s name in a different font than everybody else. It’s the little things.

SAN DIEGO -- The Dodgers and Padres get together for a rarity for both teams on Saturday, playing a doubleheader at Petco Park.

The series finale back on May 7 in San Diego was rained out, so the two teams will play two games today, a day/night doubleheader, with the first game at 12:40 p.m. PT and the second at 7:10 p.m.

It is just the second doubleheader in the history of Petco Park, which opened in 2004. The other one was on July 1, 2006 against San Francisco.

This is the sixth straight season the Dodgers have played at least one doubleheader, but all of those were in cold-weather cities with actual weather. They haven’t played a doubleheader in the state of California since Sept. 27, 2003 in San Francisco.

Brock Stewart gets the start in the first game, looking for his stuff to translate into performance in his fourth start of the year. As a starter this year, Stewart has a 6.52 ERA with eight walks and five strikeouts in 9⅔ innings, and that’s not counting the five unearned runs he also allowed while starting.

As a reliever, Stewart has a 1.26 ERA in 14⅓ innings, with 12 strikeouts and three walks.

“I think Brock’s got really good stuff. When he middles and doesn’t attack and isn’t aggressive, it’s a tough go for him,” manager Dave Roberts said. “When he’s attacking with his fastball, his slider, and plus change, he can get hitters out.

“When he takes the mound, we’ve talked to our guys about throwing as hard as you can for as long as you can. Whether it’s 50 pitches or 90 pitches, whatever the number, the mindset has to be a certain way.

Clayton Richard starts the opener on Saturday for the Padres, his fifth start against the Dodgers in 2017. After tossing eight scoreless innings at Dodger Stadium in the second game of the season on Apr. 4, Richard has allowed 15 runs on 24 hits in 15⅓ innings in his three starts since, with 14 walks and 13 strikeouts.
