Hill has a 2.68 ERA over his last 17 starts

LOS ANGELES — Rich Hill ended his regular season in style on Wednesday night against the Padres, and now — like a few of his rotation mates — begins the long wait before making his first playoff start.

The National League Division Series doesn’t start until Friday, Oct. 6, and the Dodgers haven’t announced their rotation, other than the known constant of Clayton Kershaw starting Game 1. The earliest Hill would start next in a game is Oct. 7, and possibly a few days after that.

“It all comes down to effort and the way you go about your business. It doesn’t matter when the game is. It’s about keeping that effort consistent. When you do that, you give yourself a chance,” Hill said. “I just have to make sure to do my routine.”

Up next for Hill will be a simulated game at some point during the Dodgers’ four-day layoff between the end of the regular season and the start of the NLDS, with the first two games at Dodger Stadium.

He won’t be alone in simulation land. The Dodgers end their regular season with three games against at Coors Field against the Rockies, a potential opponent in the first round. Hyun-jin Ryu starts Friday and Kershaw on Saturday, but the regular season finale on Sunday is to be determined, with several relievers likely lined up.

“It’s going to be essentially a bullpen day, but we don’t know who that starter is going to be,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Yu Darvish and Alex Wood, who pitched the first two games of this series against the Padres on Monday and Tuesday, respectively, won’t pitch in Denver, either. They are lined up to pitch simulated games, too, after the Dodgers return home.

Whenever Hill pitches next, he sure ended his season on a high note. He struck out 10 on Wednesday, his third double-digit strikeout game of the season. Only two Padres reached second base in Hill’s seven scoreless innings, and one was thanks to an error.

“It was a good night for Rich. Complete command,” Roberts said. “He was pretty much stress free all night.”

“I had all my pitches working,” Hill said. “It was a good way to end the season, and look forward to the playoffs.”

Hill’s fastball varied between 87-94 mph most of the night, per Gameday, and his curve was 73-76 mph.

“He’s got a different fastball. It’s pretty special,” said catcher Austin Barnes. “That speed differential, when he throws that curveball so slow then comes with the fastball, it really gets on hitters.

“He’s been doing well, there’s a lot of confidence in him right now.”

That confidence is thanks to Hill allowing just six total runs in five starts in September, with 40 strikeouts and eight walks in 29 innings, the final 12 of which were scoreless.

“Good timing, I guess,” Hill said. “Right in time for the postseason.”

Up next

The Dodgers will travel to Denver on Friday, then open their final regular season series on Friday against the Rockies, who own a 2½ game lead over the Brewers and 3½ game advantage over the Cardinals in the race for the second National League Wild Card spot.

Ryu starts Friday for the Dodgers, with Chad Bettis pitching for the Rockies, in a 5:10 p.m. PT start.

LA outscored SD 28-5 in the three-game series

LOS ANGELES — The Dodgers ended the home portion of their 2017 schedule the same way they began it -- with a bludgeoning of the Padres. Wednesday night saw a 10-0 victory over San Diego that moved the Dodgers one step closer to clinching home field advantage through the World Series.

Rich Hill was brilliant on the mound, allowing only two singles and two walks while striking out 10 in his seven scoreless innings. In five September starts, Hill has a 1.86 ERA with 40 strikeouts and eight walks in 29 innings.

He also helped out at the plate with an RBI single in the second inning, his second run-scoring hit on the homestand. The Dodgers were also able to provide Hill with much more support.

Austin Barnes matched his career high with three hits, including a pair of doubles, and Yasiel Puig was 2-for-4 with his 27th home run of the season. They batted seventh and eighth on Wednesday.

“You take a look at all the guys we have, it’s the lineup we sort of envisioned,” manager Dave Roberts said.

Barnes is hitting .292/.412/.495 on the season.

“I’m sticking with the same approach, trying to control the zone. I just keep working in the cage. It’s a constant battle every day, tinkering with your swing,” Barnes said. “I’m staying on top of it, and trying to put good swings on the ball.”

Curtis Granderson, who entered the game as a pinch runner in the first inning — Chris Taylor suffered a left knee contusion running to first base — hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Granderson has five extra base hits — three home runs and two doubles — in his last nine games and 29 plate appearances.

Corey Seager followed in the sixth inning with his second home run in as many nights, showing signs of breaking out of his September slump after making some alterations to his batting stance. Before this two-game, two-homer stretch, Seager had two home runs in his last 46 games.

The Dodgers scored 28 runs in the series sweep, the first time ever they have scored nine or more runs against the Padres in three consecutive games. Los Angeles outscored San Diego 121-58 this season, winning 13 of their 19 matchups.

Clayton Richard took the brunt of the damage from the Dodgers offense, allowing eight runs in his five innings. Since tossing eight scoreless innings on Apr. 4 at Dodger Stadium, in the second game of the season, Richard allowed 26 runs (24 earned) on 40 hits in 26⅓ innings in his final five starts against the Dodgers in 2017.

The series sweep by the Dodgers was their 14th sweep of at least three games in 2017, matching the 1953 Brooklyn squad for the franchise record, per STATS LLC.

With 102 wins on the season, the Dodgers matched their high since moving to Los Angeles, set in 1962 and matched in 1974. They also extended their record for most home wins since moving to Los Angeles, finishing the season 57-24 at Dodger Stadium.

“If you look back at the great Dodgers teams and teams in baseball history, we’re in an elite group,” Roberts added. “It’s something we should be proud of.”

The victory also moved the Dodgers’ magic number for home field advantage in a potential World Series matchup to just one over both the Indians and Astros.

The Dodgers are off on Thursday, but could clinch home field through the World Series with losses by both Cleveland (9 a.m., vs. Twins) and Houston (4 p.m., at Red Sox).

Wednesday particulars

LOS ANGELES -- Dodgers center fielder Chris Taylor suffered a left knee contusion and left Wednesday night’s game against the Padres in the first inning.

Taylor led off the game with a ground ball to shortstop, and reached base on a throwing error by Yangervis Solarte. Taylor had to maneuver to avoid leaping first baseman Wil Myers, then had his left foot slip as he hit the top of the bag.

After a meeting with trainer Nate Lucero and manager Dave Roberts, and some jogging down the foul line and back, a limping Taylor remained in the game momentarily. But after Corey Seager walked, Curtis Granderson entered the game to pinch run for Taylor at second base.

“It was more of a scare,” Roberts said. “It’s not a good feeling seeing your center fielder and center fielder hobbling out there.”

Taylor iced his knee after he left the game, and both he and Roberts said he expects to be in the lineup on Friday night when the Dodgers open a three-game series against the Rockies at Coors Field.

Taylor is hitting .287/.354/.498 with 21 home runs, and leads the club with 34 doubles and 17 stolen bases. He has started 72 times batting leadoff, hitting .300/.370/.534 from the top spot in the lineup.

Back tightness ends an injury-plagued 2017

LOS ANGELES — The final at-bat for Adrian Gonzalez in 2017 turned out to be bittersweet. One day after hitting a home run and a double against the Padres, the Dodgers first baseman has been shut down for the remainder of the season with a bad back.

“Last night was such an emotional night, a special night. But coming in here today, the back tightened up. It’s obviously been his most difficult year of his career, very emotional for him to try to fight through it,” manager Dave Roberts said. “Right now, as it stands, we’re going to shut him down so we don’t cause more damage. We’ll get him ready for next year, and expect him to respond to rest.”

Gonzalez missed 67 total games in two separate stints on the disabled list this season, first missing 12 games in May with elbow soreness, then missing two months with a herniated disc in his back. These were the first career DL trips for Gonzalez, who averaged 159 games played from 2006-16.

The injuries torpedoed his season, with Gonzalez hitting just .242/.287/.355 with three home runs and 17 doubles in 71 games. In August he played in the first 13 games since returning from the disabled list, starting 11, but in September Gonzalez has played in only nine games, starting four, while amassing just 20 plate appearances in 26 team games.

“With the way the season has gone, I’ve had a number of setbacks,” Gonzalez. “You don’t want to go into the postseason, play a game and the next day have a setback and figure out if they have to make a move or be down a day. There’s just too many question marks.”

On Tuesday, Gonzalez started for the first time in two weeks and had a pair of extra-base hits, including a home run to left field in the seventh inning. But rather than that propelling Gonzalez into a potential postseason role, that home run was his final at-bat of the year.

“On the heels of last night, and how well he played, helping us win a big league ballgame,” Roberts said. “Then to show up this morning and be tight and a little locked up, I know he’s very disappointed.”

“I felt great last night. The swings felt good, and everything felt right. It is what it is,” Gonzalez said. “That was encouraging, and I’ll take that into my preparation for next year.”

Gonzalez said he won’t travel when the team goes on the road this postseason, as airplane travel isn’t good for his back. His plan is to be an everyday player again in 2018, the final season of his contract with the Dodgers.

Health permitting, of course.

LOS ANGELES — Rich Hill makes his final start of the regular season on Wednesday night against the Padres, part of what has been a collective group effort by Dodgers starting pitchers in 2017.

This is the 25th start of the season for Hill, the fourth Dodgers starter to reach that mark this year, along with Clayton Kershaw, Alex Wood and Kenta Maeda. Hyun-jin Ryu will make his 24th start of the season on Friday.

But for the first time in a non-strike season since moving to Los Angeles, the Dodgers won’t have a single pitcher make 30 starts. In 1957, the club’s final year in Brooklyn, Don Drysdale led the Dodgers with 29 starts, one of seven pitchers with 10 starts.

If Yu Darvish starts Sunday in Colorado, this year’s team will have seven pitchers make at least 10 starts. All nine Dodgers pitchers to make at least two starts in 2017 have spent at least one stint on the disabled list, and four pitchers have had multiple DL trips.

Kershaw will lead the 2017 team with 27 starts, and with 171 innings heading into Saturday’s outing, will be the only pitcher on the team to qualify for the ERA title, too (the requirement is one inning per team game). Alex Wood is second with 152⅓ innings.

This is just the second season in franchise history in which the Dodgers only have one pitcher qualify for the ERA title. The first year was 2016, when Maeda was the only one to do it.

Hill struck out nine in six innings in Friday’s division clincher, and in four September starts has a 2.45 ERA with 30 strikeouts and six walks in his 22 innings. Opposing batters this month are is hitting .158/.238/.276.
