LOS ANGELES — Trailing by two runs in the middle of the game, the Dodgers’ began their comeback with a pair of walks against Cubs starter Jose Quintana.

With one out in the fifth inning, Logan Forsythe drew a five-pitch walk, one of two he had on the night. Austin Barnes followed with a seven-pitch walk. It’s no surprise those two reached base via the free pass; Forsythe (15.7%) and Barnes (14.9%) had the two highest walk rates on the team among Dodgers with at least 10 plate appearances.

Both would score. The 30-pitch fifth inning saw the Dodgers tie the game, and ended Quintana’s night.

“I thought he had it,” Joe Maddon explained. “Emotionally he was pretty much drained at that point. The couple walks were indicators of that.”

Forsythe and Barnes weren’t alone. Justin Turner was 0-for-2 against Quintana, but saw 18 pitches in those two at-bats.

“Even from the beginning, from the first pitch I thought our at-bat quality was very good. Yeah, those walks got him in the end. But you look at what J.T. did his first two at-bats against him,” Dave Roberts said. “We just kind of continued to grind those at-bats and fortunately we broke through.”

They saw a total of 158 pitches in eight innings in Game 1 of the NLCS, their lowest total in four playoff games so far. They have seen 688 total pitches in those four games, an average of 20.8 per inning.

Dodgers pitchers threw 127 pitches on Saturday night, in nine innings.

Opposing starting pitchers have recorded 46 outs against the Dodgers in these playoffs. Relievers have recorded 53.

Once Quintana was out of the game, the Dodgers scored three runs off Chicago relievers, including home runs by Chris Taylor and Yasiel Puig.

“We have to get our bullpen in order. That’s probably the biggest difference between both seasons,” Maddon said “We have to be able to hold small deficits or small leads in the middle and then hopefully get to Wade Davis in a positive situation.

“I think standing out right now, their bullpen is pretty firm, and we have to really get our feet back on the ground.”

The Dodgers bullpen has indeed been firm, retiring all 12 batters they faced in Game 1, including four strikeouts in four batters faced by Kenley Jansen.

In four playoff games, LA relievers have a 1.72 ERA with 15 strikeouts and one walk in 14⅔ innings. Kenta Maeda has retired all nine batters he faced in his three relief appearances, with four strikeouts.

“The credit goes to Kenta as far as buying in and understanding that every out in the postseason is important,” Roberts said. “So when he gets his opportunity, he’s been light’s out.”

First blood

Saturday was the Dodgers’ first Game 1 victory in the NLCS since 1985. They lost their last five such games — 1988, 2008, 2009, 2013 and 2016.

The Dodgers have won four consecutive postseason games since winning the final four games of the 1981 World Series. The franchise record is five straight postseason wins — the final game ofthe 1959 World Series, followed by a sweep of the 1963 World Series.

Rich Hill gets the ball for the Dodgers in Game 2 on Sunday night, a 4:38 p.m. PT start. The Cubs will turn to Jon Lester, four days after he pitched 3⅔ innings and threw 55 pitches in relief in Game 4 of the NLDS.

“It’s kind of just work in between [starts]. You just got to do it in the game as opposed to on the side,” Lester said Saturday. “I don’t think it’s a problem. This time of year you have to adjust and figure it out.”

LOS ANGELES — Chris Taylor and Yasiel Puig hit home runs to key a comeback, and aggressive use of a stellar bullpen closed out the Cubs in Game 1 of the NLCS, a 5-2 Dodgers victory on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.

In addition to the expected contributions from Taylor and Puig, the Dodgers got production from their shortstop as well, which normally wouldn’t be news. But with Corey Seager off the roster for this series, Charlie Culberson stepped filled in admirably, driving in the tying run with a sacrifice fly, then adding some insurance in the seventh inning by scoring after hitting a double.

Culberson had all of 15 major league plate appearances in the regular season.

“That sac fly he got there to score that second run was huge. He got behind 0-2 and dug a breaking ball out and lifted it to left field,” manager Dave Roberts said. “I think it was big for his confidence, and to get another hit later, a leg double, was great.

“We trust Charlie. He’s a part of what we’re doing right now, and he’s a heck of a baseball player.”

Taylor gave the Dodgers the lead in the sixth inning against reliever Hector Rendon, with an opposite-field home run, one of his two hits on the night.

“In big spots, he has the ability to zone in and swing at strikes and take balls. So he’s done that all year for us,” Roberts said. “To get that big homer to right center really didn’t surprise us. Just another thing to add to his special season.”

Puig added another run with a solo shot in the seventh, offering a contrast in styles. Earlier in the game, Puig drove in the Dodgers first run with a double, and flipped his bat thinking it was a home run.

Puig said he thought the ball would be caught by Kyle Schwarber in left field, but then it carried. “The wind helped me out tonight,” Puig said, then blew on the microphone.

Puig is 7-for-15 (.467) this postseason, with two doubles, a triple, a home run, two walks and six RBI in four games.

“He loves the big stage, and his only focus is helping us continue to win baseball games,” Roberts said. “So right now he’s playing at a high level, and not only the fans, but his teammates are feeding off of it.”

The game was scoreless until the fourth inning, when catcher Willson Contreras singled to open the frame against Clayton Kershaw.
Almora hit the next pitch into the left field pavilion for a 2-0 Cubs lead, the fifth home run allowed in 11⅓ innings this postseason for Kershaw, who gave up a career-worst 23 home runs during the regular season.

Kershaw fell behind in the count at some point with at least two balls on nine of his 20 batters, and was at 87 pitches through five innings. He was pinch hit for in the bottom of the fifth with a runner in scoring position, with Roberts roactively removing his ace at his first reasonable chance. Roberts said had Kershaw’s spot in the order not come up, he would have likely only faced one more batter, the left-handed Anthony Rizzo, to start the sixth.

It was something Roberts hinted at on Wednesday.

“No one wants it more than he does, but to have the guys in the pen who I feel very confident in going to lends itself to not pushing him,” Roberts said.

Roberts pushed the right buttons with his bullpen though, mixing and matching for the final 12 outs, with Tony Cingrani (one out), Kenta Maeda (three), Brandon Morrow (two), Tony Watson (two), and Kenley Jansen (four) slamming the door shut on the win.

LOS ANGELES — With Corey Seager off the Dodgers’ roster for the NLCS, Charlie Culberson gets the start at shortstop for the Dodgers in Game 1 against the Cubs on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.

Seager, who suffered a back sprain in Game 3 of the NLDS, received an epidural injection on Tuesday. He still hasn’t been cleared by the training staff to run or hit, which made it an easier decision to leave him off the NLCS roster.

“Having Charlie being able to catch the baseball at short and like him against a left-handed pitcher, it just made sense for us to kind of not have Corey on the roster.”

Culberson is a career .251/.278/.345 hitter in the majors against left-handed pitchers, compared to .217/.267/.308 against righties. In 2017, Culberson hit .300/.319/.527 in 113 against left-handers in Triple-A and the majors combined.

The options with Seager out really aren’t that great, and Culberson is the Dodgers’ best defender at the position. The other shortstop options — Chris Taylor and Kiké Hernandez — are starting in center field and left field in Game 1.

Hernandez, who hit .270/.367/.579 with 25 extra-base hits in 177 plate appearances against lefties in 2017, bats cleanup against Jose Quintana on Saturday, the fourth time he has batted fourth this season.

Against left-hander Clayton Kershaw, there is no Jason Heyward and no Ben Zobrist, with Albert Almora Jr. in center field and Jon Jay in right field. Left-hander Kyle Schwarber is in the lineup though, batting seventh.

LOS ANGELES — A key factor in the National League Championship Series just might be plate discipline, something the Dodgers have excelled at this season.

Dodgers batters led the majors with 649 walks in 2017, and the Cubs were second with 610. Both teams were first and second in walk rate as well — 10.5% for the Dodgers, 9.9% for the Cubs.

It’s not all about drawing walks, however. It’s more about controlling the zone, and doing damage with strikes. That worked like a charm for the Dodgers in the NLDS, where they drew 16 walks in three games against the Diamondbacks, but also hit .297 with a .462 slugging percentage, and scored 20 runs in their sweep of Arizona.

The Dodgers were experts in controlling the zone on both sides in 2017. As hitters, they swung at the fewest percentage of pitches outside the strike zone (26.2%), and as pitchers they induced the highest percentage of swings outside the zone (32.8%).

“There is a fine line between being passive, as opposed to being aggressive in your zone,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said last week. “I think that the best hitters are aggressive in their zone.”

Cubs hitters, while drawing a ton of walks, also swung at 31.3% of pitches outside the zone, sixth-highest in baseball. Their pitchers were in the middle of the pack, ranking 14th in inducing hitters to swing at 30% of pitches outside the zone.

Only five players in baseball in 2017 among the 144 players with qualified plate appearances had more walks than strikeouts, and two of them will hit third in this series. Justin Turner had 59 walks and 56 strikeouts during the regular season, while Anthony Rizzo had 91 walks and 90 strikeouts.

Dodgers pitchers had the second-best walk rate in the majors (7.5%), while Cubs pitchers had the seventh-worst (9.1%). Since the All-Star break, Chicago relievers have a 12.1% walk rate, the highest in the majors.

In Game 5 against the Nationals, seven different Cubs pitchers issued a walk, just the second postseason game ever with that many pitchers walking a batter. The other such instance was by the White Sox in Game 3 of the 2005 World Series.

Chicago walked 25 batters in five games against Washington in the NLDS.

Clayton Kershaw will start Game 1 for the Dodgers.

Quintana started Game 3 of the NLDS against the Nationals, allowing just one unearned run in 5 innings, striking out seven. He also pitched in relief on Thursday night in Game 5, though he threw just 12 pitches to his four batters faced, retiring two.

It was his first relief appearance since Sept. 25, 2012, his rookie campaign.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said on Friday the choice for Game 1 was between Quintana and John Lackey, who didn’t pitch at all in the NLDS. Jon Lester, who pitched 3⅔ innings in relief in Game 4 on Wednesday, is a candidate to start Game 2 on short rest.

“Lester threw what, 55 pitches the other night? Not bad, not bad. Kind of a heavy workout moving forward, so he's not far off,” Maddon said. “Quintana [Thursday] night, 12 or 13, so that's not awful either. That's almost like a workout night for a side piece as it turned out. So he's not bad.”

Chicago’s Game 2 starter hasn’t yet been named, but we’ll probably find out later Saturday afternoon, since that pitcher is scheduled for 2:20 p.m. in the interview room at Dodger Stadium.
