With the way the season has started for the Dodgers, scoring runs in critical moments has escaped them for the most part. Wednesday’s game was anything but pretty to watch but the runs did come across eventually, just not anywhere close to the usual ways.

After loading the bases for three innings in a row, the Dodgers finally broke through for three in the sixth inning to break a 1-1 tie. They would eventually hold on to beat the Diamondbacks by the score of 6-3 to split the series.

Three of the first four hitters of the sixth singled to bring up the bottom of the order for the Dodgers. Kyle Farmer lifted a run-scoring flyball to left, Chris Taylor took a ball to the ribs two batters later to score another and a wild pitch brought home the other run that gave them a 4-1 lead.

Arizona would not go quietly however, getting two back in the seventh to bring the Dodgers lead to just one.

The two teams had combined to go just 2-for-19 with runners in scoring position as the game moved into the bottom of the eighth. The one-run lead was no guarantee for a game that saw the first five runs of the game scored on a fluke inside-the-park homer, two wild pitches, a sac fly and a hit batter.

Chase Utley would provide some much needed insurance with a two-run double, giving Kenley Jansen the breathing room to toss a perfect ninth inning.

The two starting pitchers didn’t figure in the decision but both were tough over five innings, working out of trouble in each inning. Alex Wood scattered five hits and three walks to go with four strikeouts, making it the fourth time he allowed one run or less in his first eight starts.

That only run against Wood came on a flyball to center that caromed off the wall, allowing Nick Ahmed to run all the way around the bases.

Welcome Back

Yasiel Puig had three singles and two runs scored in his first game back from the disabled list.

Up next

The Dodgers welcome the Reds to town Thursday to start a four-game series. Walker Buehler (2-0, 1.13) will take the ball against Tyler Mahle (2-4, 4.35).

The Dodgers optioned Alex Verdugo Wednesday to make room for Yasiel Puig as he returns from the 10-day disabled list. Puig, who will make the start in right field and bat seventh in the series finale with the Diamondbacks, missed nine games due to a left hip contusion.

Verdugo appeared in all nine of those games, batting .265 (9-for-34) with three runs, four doubles and one RBI. The 21-year-old will head back to Triple-A due to the roster crunch in the outfield.

Puig isn’t the only one the Dodgers brought back Wednesday. The team also recalled left-handed reliever Scott Alexander and right-handed pitcher Brock Stewart from Oklahoma City. To create room on the active roster, the Dodgers placed left-handed reliever Tony Cingrani on the 10-day DL and optioned right-hander Yimi García back to the minors.

Alexander struggled earlier this season, allowing eight runs in 11 1⁄3 innings while giving up nine walks and 12 hits to the 51 batters he faced. While in Oklahoma City, Alexander pitched four scoreless innings.

Cingrani goes to the disabled list with left shoulder inflammation after dealing with it over the last week. In 18 games this season, he has gone 0-2 with a 5.79 ERA and has struck out 22 batters against just four walks.

Getting Closer

A pair of Dodgers took the next step in the rehab process on Wednesday. Justin Turner hit in a simulated game batting practice and Clayton Kershaw played catch for the first time since Saturday.

There is still no timetable for either to return but Turner said he hopes to return to the Dodgers by next weekend when the team is Washington.

The Dodgers and Diamondbacks will close out the two-game series at Dodger Stadium Wednesday with a pair of lefties who are on opposite sides of the win-loss column, much like their respective teams.

Alex Wood will take the ball for the Dodgers in search of his first win on the season. The 27-year-old has allowed three or less runs in five of his seven starts, totaling six earned runs over 30 1⁄3 innings pitched in those games. Despite those numbers, Wood is still 0-3 with a 3.38 ERA.

It was at this point in 2017 that Wood really took off, cutting down every team in his path on his way to an 11-0 start. From May 8 to July 15, Wood gave up just six runs in 62 innings, striking out 74 against 14 walks.

The area of concern for the Dodgers at the moment is the stockpile of players on the disabled list. They hope they won’t have to add Wood to that growing list after he battled hamstring cramping in his last start.

Corbin (4-0, 2.15) has been a different story for the Dbacks this season, developing into the ace he always had the potential to be. The 28-year-old has been stingy, giving up just 26 hits and 11 runs in 46 innings, while striking out 60 with nine walks.

Corbin has allowed just one run to the Dodgers in two starts but the Dodgers took one of those games when these two pitchers squared off less than a week ago in Arizona.

This will be the last meeting between these two teams until August 30. The Dodgers could use the break since they’ve lost eight of the 11 games so far this season.
