The Dodgers were held without a hit until the sixth inning but made up for it in the seventh, scoring three times on their way to a 3-2 victory over the Padres.

The win moves the Dodgers a half-game ahead of the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West, the first time they’ve had sole possession of the division lead in 2018.

Padres’ starter Tyson Ross was in complete control until the game moved into the seventh, when the wheels fell off. Chris Taylor lined a one-out double down the left field line, and came in to break the scoreless tie three pitches later on an Andrew Toles bloop single, chasing Ross from the game.

Craig Stammen would be called upon to face the bottom part of the order but would hit both Kiké Hernandez and Chase Utley to bring Matt Kemp to the plate with the bases loaded. The All-Star would deliver a single to bring home another run, while Hernandez was thrown out at the plate.

Kemp is now 30-for-68 (.441) with runners in scoring position this season, driving in 45 of his 60 total RBI.

Joc Pederson immediately extended the lead, smashing a single to right to bring home the eventual winning run.

Ross Stripling fought through command issues all night in his last start of the first half. The Padres frequently had runners on in the early going, doubling in each of the first two and loading the bases in the fourth. But Stripling found his way out of each jam on his way to six scoreless innings.

Ross struck out to end the threat in the fourth, following an excellent play by Chris Taylor that prevented a run. With runners on first and second, Austin Hedges roped a ground ball to the hole at short. Taylor was able to get his glove on it to keep the ball in the infield.

Stripling would get seven of the last eight hitters he faced, striking out four of them. After striking out five with one walk Thursday, the right-hander end his incredible first half with a 2.08 ERA, striking out 108 against only 14 free passes.

Daniel Hudson got into a little trouble in the seventh inning, allowing the first two runners to reach before being replaced by Scott Alexander. The lefty struck out the next two batters but Will Myers lined a two-run double to center to bring the Padres within one.

Eighth inning is yours?

Since joining the Dodgers on July 8, Dylan Floro has pitched 3 2⁄3 scoreless innings and has pitched the eighth inning in each of the last two nights. The right-hander also has some filthy breaking pitches.

The Dodgers have had the least amount of offensive production from second base out of any position this season, but they have had the most players (7) to start at least one game there. The Dodgers’ second basemen are nearly dead last in baseball in combined batting average (.219), and they’re 12th in the NL in on-base-plus-slugging-percentage (.644). This even includes Max Muncy’s .360 average and four home runs in 25 at-bats at second.

The original second base combination that manager Dave Roberts started the season with in Logan Forsythe and Chase Utley have not produced much. Both are hitting right around the Mendoza Line, and this opened the door for Muncy to take an expanded starting role at second base.

As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, the Dodgers are rumored to have interest in not only Manny Machado, but also other position players such as Scooter Gennett, Brian Dozier and Asdrubal Cabrera.

Sources: Dodgers have stepped up pursuit of a position player and are looking beyond Manny Machado.
It’s no secret that the Dodgers could use some pitching reinforcements, both in the starting and relief department. Although management has shown over the years they’re persistently looking for upgrades to the roster, even incremental ones, the question of whether they really need an upgrade at second base is fair considering Muncy’s meteoric rise.

The Dodgers lucked out with Muncy, who has come from out of nowhere and become one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball in the first half of the season. Roberts has in turn played the hot bat and given Muncy more playing time at second base, pushing Forsythe and Utley to the bench.

Baseball doesn’t always go as planned, but the Dodgers’ 40-man roster was built with depth and versatility. Muncy was originally called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City to fill-in for the injured Justin Turner at third base. Once Turner returned after missing the first 40 games of the season, and Chris Taylor took over for Corey Seager at shortstop, it only made sense to pencil in Muncy at second to get his hot bat in the lineup.

Utley, in turn, only gets about one start per week. Forsythe’s role was diminished to less than a platoon situation with Muncy at second.

Roberts told Bill Shaikin of the LA Times that Forsythe would be limited to a platoon role with Muncy back on July 1.

“We know that there’s a lot more in there from Logan. He’ll get opportunities. But, right now, in the foreseeable future, it’s going to be more against left-handed pitching.”

Before the series in San Diego, Forsythe had only started once on July 8 vs. the Angels and has primarily come into the game for late innings in his six prior July appearances. With trade season heating up, Roberts started Forsythe in consecutive games on Tuesday and Wednesday.

He went 0-for-3 on Tuesday with three strikeouts. Unfortunately the struggling second baseman ran into some bad luck when one of the umpires took matters into his own hands, taking away a double from Forsythe. Roberts went with Forsythe again on Wednesday against left-hander Joey Lucchesi, and he fared a bit better going 1-for-2 with a RBI single, a walk, and a strikeout.

Meanwhile, Muncy is hitting .276/.416/.614/1.030 with 21 home runs in 210 at-bats this season. In his nine games at second base, he’s slugging .840 and OPSing 1.396 with four home runs in 25 at-bats.

Should the Dodgers acquire another position player at the trade deadline, they would need to find space on the roster. Forsythe and Utley are blatantly the weakest links. Utley does still have value off the bench and in the clubhouse as a mentor and “Dad” to many of the younger players. Utley was never seen as a starting solution at second base coming into the season. He’s hitting an even .200 as a starter and .409 as a pinch-hitter. Utley came up with another big pinch-hit on Wednesday at Petco Park.

An acquisition of Machado proportions would shake up the lineup and defensive configuration. If Machado took over primarily at shortstop, Muncy would shift to first base, Cody Bellinger would go to the outfield, and Taylor would also have to play more outfield. Muncy has played the majority of his games at first base (33) and second most at third (27).

Muncy not only also has been a solid contributor at the plate, but he’s been versatile all around the infield defensively. When he was asked to play second base, he re-learned admirably.

Gennett, NL batting leader, would certainly be an upgrade at second base from Forsythe and Utley. Of course it depends on what the Dodgers would have to give up for Gennett or another position player. A second baseman doesn’t need to hit bombs every night, but the cornerstone position is usually filled by someone who can provide solid defense and produce consistent offense. Forsythe has never quite looked like the same player who hit 20 home runs for Tampa Bay in 2016. His five hits in the World Series gave us a peek at Forsythe’s potential, but ultimately it’s not enough.

Forsythe is in the final year of his three-year $18.25 million deal.

If the Dodgers make a move, it would be hard to see Utley going anywhere after they signed him to a two-year, $2 million dollar deal this offseason, and he’s been very good off the bench.

The Dodgers lead the NL in home runs (125), and the offense is second in slugging (.430), so they’re producing with the guys they have. The scary thing is that Justin Turner is still not 100%, and that may play another part in the Machado saga. Perhaps the answer to their second base woes has already been answered in Muncy, but there’s always room for improvement and a trade deadline Manny.

Documentary will air Sunday night on MLB Network

MLB Network will air a documentary this Sunday on the 1988 Dodgers, entitled ‘Only in Hollywood,’ that does a great job in chronicling the last World Series winner for the franchise.

“The overwhelming theme was the emotion of this team. The emotion of Orel, and Kirk, and Tommy, because that’s what this team had. An incredible heart and togetherness,” former Dodgers general manager Fred Claire said at a viewing of the documentary on Tuesday. “I think they did a great job with this team because it portrayed what this team was all about.”

The film is narrated by lifelong Dodgers fan Bryan Cranston, and weaves from 2018’s opening day celebration of the 30th anniversary of that team to archival footage from 1988. The footage actually starts in 1987, when Fred Claire took over as general manager after longtime Dodgers executive Al Campanis stepped down after making racist comments on ABC’s Nightline.

“The saddest part in the film was the story on Al, because he was a great man, and a great baseball man,” Claire said. “I know it was a part of history so it was portrayed. That was really the only part I didn’t enjoy.”

That 1988 team will forever be the defining sports team of my lifetime, a team from my favorite sport and capturing my 12-year-old heart that was just waiting for a taker. If his documentary was 10 hours I would have enjoyed every minute of it. As it is, roughly 45 minutes or so, it has a crisp pace throughout.

The main points are certainly covered in the film, including the acquisition of Kirk Gibson as a free agent and his immediate impact on the team, Orel Hershiser’s record 59-inning scoreless streak and incredible postseason run, Mickey Hatcher and the “Stunt men,” both postseason battles and of course Gibson’s home run in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

“The one part of this film where enough credit is not given but is a part of the game, is the scouts,” Claire said. “Mel Didier, a dear friend that we lost, was not mentioned. It was his scouting report — Eckersley, 3-2, a backdoor slider is coming.”

Interviews with Hershiser and Gibson are featured throughout the film as well as several other players plus Tommy Lasorda, Claire and Bob Costas to name a few, but the standout to me in this area is Bill Plaschke of the Los Angeles Times, who covered that team. He has some of the best lines of the show, even if only to set up a highlight or two.

The film gets emotional at times, especially for Hershiser, who was also at Tuesday’s screening.

“You really start to believe it was the emotion of the team, the heart of the team, and what he was seeking when he went and got Mickey Hatcher, and knew Kirk Gibson would be the guy,” Hershiser said. “It was inside of a lot of us who were already Dodgers but Gibby and Mickey made it cool to care, and outwardly. As outwardly as Tommy Lasorda.

“Before everyone was like, ‘That’s Tommy, and we’re the professional baseball players.’ Then it became that there’s a few players on our team who care outwardly like Tommy does, and we said okay we can run with that. It gave us permission to show what was inside of us.”

‘Only in Hollywood’ will air on MLB Network on Sunday at both 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. PT.

Player of the day

Will Smith homered in his fourth straight game, and has five home runs in his last six. Smith’s home run was his 16th of the year, upping his season slash line to .296/.391/.614 at Tulsa. Smith also doubled and singled, coming up a triple shy of the cycle. He’s hitting .452 in his last ten games, is on a seven game hitting streak, with two or more hits in five of those games.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City was off Wednesday. They return to action Thursday at Round Rock, with Daniel Corcino scheduled to start.

Double-A Tulsa

Will Smith came up short in his attempt to single-handedly defeat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Royals) 9-5. Smith drove in three runs and also scored a pair. Jacob Scavuzzo also had three hits, including a double and two runs driven in.

Isaac Anderson did not fare well in his return to Double A, lasting just 3.1 innings while surrendering six runs. Michael Boyle struck out one in 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one run to cross. Corey Copping was the only Driller pitcher to keep the Naturals off the board, striking out a pair in a scoreless ninth.

Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

The Quakes middle order was held hitless in a 6-2 defeat to the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies). Cody Thomas, Cristian Santana, and Omar Estevez combined to go 0-13 in the 3rd-5th spots in the order. Gavin Lux and Connor Wong each had a pair of hits, with Wong going deep for the 13th time this season.

Austin Hamilton took the loss by allowing three runs in four innings of work. Ryan Moseley also struggled, walking three and giving up three runs while recording just two outs. Zach Pop continued his dominance with another shutout inning in the ninth.

Class-A Great Lakes

The Loons needed ten innings to record their first run, but it was still enough to defeat the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners) 1-0. Josh McLain singled in Luke Heyer in the tenth, McLain’s only hit of the game. Devin Mann also had a hit in three at bats.

Edwin Uceta was stellar to start, throwing six shutout innings while striking out seven. Jasiel Alvino took the win with a scoreless ninth and tenth inning, striking out three.

Short Season Ogden

The Raptors put forth the most complete game of the night with an 11-0 clubbing of the Missoula Osprey (Diamondbacks). The offense was led by Drew Avans, who went four for five with two home runs and five runs driven in. Matt cogen and Ronny Brito each homered, while Chris Amaya went three for five from the leadoff spot.

Jose Chacin earned the win after throwing five shutout innings, striking out four. Hunter Speer and Justin Hagenman each pitched a pair of scoreless innings in relief.

Rookie Level Arizona

The Dodgers were off on Wednesday. They will play the Indians Two on Thursday.
