Max Muncy added to his incredible 2018 campaign Friday night, slugging another homer and having his hand in all three runs as the Dodgers took the opener with a 3-2 win over the Angels.

The Dodgers needed a late rally in the seventh inning, started by a Logan Forsythe leadoff single. After Joc Pederson doubled to put runners at second and third, Muncy lined a ball in the gap in right field.

The game would’ve been tied had right fielder Kole Calhoun not thrown it over everybody to the backstop. Instead, Pederson came home with the eventual winning run.

With his 22nd homer, Muncy is now 17-for-51 (.333) with six homers over his last 15 games.

“He’s a winning player, whether it be with the bat or on defense. He’s sort of in the middle of everything,” manager Dave Roberts said. “It’s nice to be able to rise to the occasion, get the big hit when you need it.”

Walker Buehler struck out five and allowed six hits over five innings in his first start since June 8, working around traffic on the base paths early on. The Angels had runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings but came away 0-for-6.

Both runs for the Halos came on two solo homers off the bat of Calhoun, one in the third and one in the fifth. The second long ball was the only hit over the last nine batters Buehler would face.

The Dodgers got two more solid innings out of the bullpen from Caleb Ferguson. The lefty pitched two scoreless innings to give his team a chance at the comeback and has opened some eyes as a reliever.

Ferguson has allowed only two earned runs over 13 innings (1.38 ERA) since going to the pen in late June. The 22-year-old has also struck out 16 while walking only one in those five appearances.

With Kenley Jansen unavailable after pitching the last two nights, left-hander Scott Alexander came out of the bullpen to try and nail down his first save in a Dodger uniform.

A Shohei Ohtani pinch-hit double and an infield hit for Jose Briceno put runners at the corners with only one out, but Alexander — ground-ball artist — induced a double play to end the game.

6-time All-Star will retire at the end of the 2018 season.

LOS ANGELES — Chase Utley spent the last few years of his illustrious baseball career in a different role as a player with the Dodgers. On Friday he announced another change, retiring at the end of the season to spend more time with his family.

“I transitioned to a part-time player, something that was new for me, but I took it in stride. I really enjoyed that time,” Utley said. “I’m also a part-time strength coach, a part-time pitching coach, occasionally a part-time catching coach, as well as a part-time general manager.

“The thing I’m having the most difficult time with is being a part-time dad. That’s really the reason I’m shutting it down, to be a full-time dad. It is a difficult decision, but one I’m comfortable with.”

Utley said he came to terms with the decision about a month ago, and told the team of his decision during a team meeting on Thursday in San Diego.

“Chase did it in an uncharacteristic, uncomfortable way for him,” manager Dave Roberts said. “But I think it was the right thing to do. He’s got some peace, and he’s looking forward to help us win baseball games.”

In 57 games this season the 39-year-old Utley is hitting .231/.313/.331 in limited duty. He’s 12th on the team in plate appearances (147), and has started 30 of the team’s 93 games. He was a six-time All-Star with the Phillies.

Utley in February signed a two-year, $2 million contract to return to the Dodgers, though the length of the deal seemed more to placate the Dodgers’ desire to stay under the competitive balance tax in 2018 than anything.

Now, any contributions Utley has next season would be in a non-playing capacity — Roberts suggested player development or special assistant — and largely dependent on allowing Utley time to spend with his wife and two sons, ages three and six.

“The impact he’s had on this organization is immeasurable,” Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. “To think about the 2019 Dodgers without Chase is difficult, but we will do everything we can to steal as much of those hours as Jen and the boys will allow.”

That impact was evident on Friday, when nearly the entire Dodgers team, including players and coaches, crammed into the small media room already filled with reporters. Several players, including Corey Seager, Clayton Kershaw, Rich Hill, Joc Pederson and Austin Barnes, were even sitting on the floor.

One of the many young Dodgers that Utley has impacted is Kiké Hernandez, who has playfully referred to Utley as “Dad” for a while, and even had bats made with Utley’s uniform number 26 for Hernandez to use.

“He’s changed everything. He’s changed the way I see the game, he’s changed the way I eat,” Hernandez said. “He changed the way I prepare in the offseason, and from now on if I end up having a pretty successful career, whether he likes it or not he’ll have had a lot to do with that.”

Hernandez recalled first meeting Utley as a rookie in 2014.

“When I first got to the big leagues, I got to second base when I was with the Marlins. I said, ‘What’s up’ to him and he just stared at me, mean-mugged me,” Hernandez recalled. “Then I started smiling and I think that made him mad, and I thought Chase was a total asshole.”

One year later, Hernandez was with the Dodgers and Utley was acquired in August.

“I went up to Jimmy Rollins, who laughed and said, ‘Yeah that’s the same Chase that I know. Just wait until he gets here, you’re going to love him from the first day.’ Sure enough, [Utley] adopted me. One of the reasons he is retiring is to spend more time with me.”

Since returning from the disabled list on June 22, Utley has started just four of 20 games, and Roberts at the end of June described Utley’s reduced role: “It’s a once-a-week thing, understanding his value is as a pinch-hitter, to give us a good at-bat off the bench.”

Utley this season is 9-for-22 (.409) with two doubles and a triple as a pinch-hitter this season, leading the Dodgers in pinch hits.

He thinks getting this retirement announcement out of the way now will help him focus on baseball down the stretch.

“It gives me some clarity with 2½ months left and possibly a full month of postseason, getting this out of the way now, getting it off my chest, I’ll be at ease a little bit more,” Utley said. “I can go into the last chapter of my baseball career with enthusiasm and excitement, but most of all a clear mind.”

When the Dodgers announced there would be a press conference for Chase Utley Friday afternoon, retirement was an immediate conclusion. There would be no surprise when Utley walked into the media room at Dodger Stadium at 3:15 p.m. PT.

“I just want you guys to know that I’ve signed a five-year extension here with the Dodgers,” Utley started with that rarely-seen smile. After the laughter subsided, the 39-year-old confirmed that he will indeed retire at the end of the 2018 season.

Utley came to the conclusion about a month ago that this season would be his last, with the team’s trip to Philadelphia in 10 days playing a factor in the timing of the announcement.

“There’s a lot of different tools, I believe, that kind of help guys perform at this level,” said Utley. “One of those tools in my opinion is confidence. The Philadelphia fans really brought that confidence out in me.”

Utley played 1551 games in a Phillies uniform over 13 seasons, ranking in the top 10 in several categories in the 136-year history of the franchise. The second baseman played in two World Series, winning one — much to the dismay of the Dodgers who lost in back-to-back National League Championship Series for Philadelphia to accomplish that.

Even after coming to Los Angeles in a part-time role, the intensity with which he played the game never stopped. A quality that has made him a beloved member of two organizations now.

What happens from here is unknown as far as baseball is concerned. Utley wants to spend more time with his two sons and wife, saying he was “ready to be a full-time dad.” I’m sure the Dodgers will try to keep him around in some capacity when 2018 is in the rear view. But for now, Utley will enjoy the final two and a half months this season has in store for him.

The Dodgers needed to make a roster move in order to activate Walker Buehler from the 10-day disabled list. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte was that move, ending his fifth stint with the Dodgers this year.

Venditte didn’t make an appearance this time around while on the roster, having last pitched back on June 8. In five games for the Dodgers this year, Venditte has given up four runs and eight hits over 4 1⁄3 innings.

Buehler comes off the DL to join a temporary six-man rotation that will carry through the first three weeks after the All-Star break. The almost 24-year-old is 2-1 with a 1.48 ERA in five starts at Dodger Stadium this year, allowing five runs in 30 1⁄3 innings and striking out 31 while walking only three.

When the Dodgers take the field Friday night, they will do so as a first place team. A position they’ve fought hard to get to after such an abysmal start. Standing in front of them and the All-Star break is three games with the Angels, a team that took two of three from them last weekend.

Making his first start since June 8, Walker Buehler takes the ball for the Dodgers. The right-hander has been on a wild ride since being placed on the DL some five weeks ago with a microfracture in one of his ribs on the right side.

The Dodgers plan of letting him pitch three innings out of the bullpen June 28 backfired when he allowed five hits and five runs over one-plus inning. The result was a rehab stint with High-A Rancho and a simulated game Sunday in Anaheim.

Manager Dave Roberts has signaled recently that the team could use a six-man rotation coming out of the All-Star break. With 17 consecutive games before another day off, it would allow the rotation an extra day of rest while the Dodgers figure out what to do with all their starters.

Much like Ross Stripling, Buehler has already contributed more than was expected before the season began. Now he will return to the rotation as the Dodgers look to stay ahead of the teams in their division.

The Angels have started to pull themselves out of the slump they were in recently when they had lost 25 of the 41 games between mid-May and June. But even winning four of the last six games, the Halos are still 13 games out of their division and 10 games behind in the wild card race.

There is still time to get tickets for this series through our partners at StubHub.
It would’ve already taken a miracle for the Angels to climb back in the playoff race before they got even more bad news about their already depleted starting rotation. It was announced Thursday that Garrett Richards will undergo Tommy John Surgery July 24, meaning the right-hander will miss the rest of this season and next.

Angel Manager Mike Scioscia has been forced to lean on a group of guys that ordinarily wouldn't be starting many games. That includes two of the three starters for this weekend at Dodger Stadium.

Friday, 7:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

The Dodgers will get their second look at Felix Pena after the right-hander held them to two two runs over 5 1⁄3 innings while striking out eight last Friday.

Buehler will make his sixth start at Dodger Stadium in 2018, having had great success in the first five. The almost 24-year-old is 2-1 with a 1.48 ERA, allowing five runs in 30 1⁄3 innings and striking out 31 while walking only three.

Saturday, 4:15 p.m. PT (FOX)

Andrew Heaney allowed a three-run homer to Yasiel Puig last Sunday night before shutting down the Dodger offense the rest of the way over seven innings.

Clayton Kershaw has allowed five runs in 20 innings over four starts since returning from the DL back on June 23. The last time out was the lefty’s first scoreless start of the year, holding the Padres to just two hits over six innings.

Sunday, 1:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

The Angels haven’t announced a starter for Sunday but it looks like it could be Deck McGuire. The Dodgers saw him last Saturday in a three-inning spot start as he struck out six and walked two.

Rich Hill has allowed four runs in two of his five starts since returning from the disabled list June 19. The lefty was bit by the home run ball his last time out, but has otherwise pitched well and looks like the blister issue is behind him for now.

Batter to watch

Among several Dodgers that are hitting well this month, Matt Kemp has been scorching the ball in July, hitting .412/.462/647 in 39 plate appearances.

Thursday night saw lots of offense among Dodgers minor league affiliates, and some standout performances both at the plate and on the mound from many of the names you might have seen in recent trade rumors.

Player of the day

Catcher Keibert Ruiz broke out for the Drillers against Northwest Arkansas with two home runs and a double, driving in four runs in Tulsa’s 14-3 road shellacking. Ruiz also walked, but the hits were a welcome sight for the switch-hitter who was 18 for his last 102, hitting just .176/.257/.245 in his previous 29 games before Thursday night.

Ruiz is hitting .251/.315/.397 on the season even with those struggles, and has also struck out just 20 times in 270 plate appearances (a minuscule 7.4% rate). The season-long performance gains even more perspective when realizing that Ruiz doesn’t turn 20 until next Friday.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City in their first game back after the Triple-A All-Star break fell to the Round Rock Express (Rangers), 8-4. Daniel Corcino allowed six runs and couldn’t get out of the fourth inning.

Alex Verdugo hit a two-run home run in his first at-bat back from the break, and Jake Peter added a two-run shot in the fifth. Zach Neal pitched scoreless ball in 3⅔ innings of relief.

Double-A Tulsa

The Drillers did most of the drilling on Thursday in their 14-3 road victory over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals (Royals). In addition to Ruiz’s big night, Tulsa also got home runs from second baseman Drew Jackson and first baseman Luke Raley. Yusniel Diaz had four hits, including two doubles, and a walk in the blowout. Diaz is 18-for-40 (.450) with seven extra-base hits and seven walks in 10 July games for a tidy .532 on-base percentage.

All that offense was in support of Mitch White, who pitched his best game of the season. White struck out six and pitched scoreless ball into the seventh, when he allowed a lone unearned run.

Advanced Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

Dustin May struck out a career-high 12 in the Quakes’ 8-4 win over the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies), continuing a strong run for the 20-year-old right-hander. May pitched 6⅔ innings in what was actually his shortest outing in his last four starts. He allowed three runs, two of which were earned, and owns a 3.09 ERA this season that ranks third in the California League.

Fellow 20-year-old Gavin Lux continued his hot hitting with a home run, a double and a single. Lux has a 14-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .383/.424/.550.

Marshall Kasowski struck out four in 1⅓ scoreless innings of relief. Since joining the Quakes, the 23-year-old right-hander — drafted in the 13th round in 2017 — has a 0.95 ERA with 35 strikeouts and eight walks in just 19 innings. Counting his time in Great Lakes this year Kasowski has 84 strikeouts in 47 innings and a 44.7% K rate.

Class-A Great Lakes

The Midwest League isn’t necessarily known for offense, but the Loons busted out on Thursday night with a season-best 18 hits in a 10-1 road win over the Clinton LumberKings (Mariners). Every Great Lakes batter scored a run and eight of the nine batters had a hit. The only Loon without a hit was 2018 fifth-round pick Devin Mann, who walked, scored and drove in a run.

Fellow 2018 Dodgers draftees excelled on Thursday, with third baseman Luke Heyer (eighth round) doubling twice and singling, and left fielder Josh McLain (ninth round) 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Rookie-level Ogden

The Raptors got drubbed 11-4 by the Missoula Batters (Diamondbacks), but Ogden did get home runs from both Drew Avans and Ronny Brito in the loss.

Transactions

Triple-A: Tim Locastro was activated from the disabled list, and pitcher Madison Younginer was placed on the DL retroactive to Monday.

Class-A: Great Lakes placed pitcher Victor Gonzalez on the disabled list, and pitcher Riley Richert was promoted to the Loons from Ogden.
