The Dodgers hit two pinch-hit home runs in the same inning for the first time since 1975

It was a low-scoring pitcher’s duel at Coors Field on Thursday night through six innings before the bullpens took the wheel. Ross Stripling’s toe looked fine, and he only allowed one run on four hits in six innings of work in his first start off the disabled list. Tyler Anderson had an equally strong outing as well for the Rockies.

The Dodgers’ offense continued to struggle to gain any traction even in the thin air at Coors Field until Joc Pederson and Max Muncy hit two pinch-hit solo home runs in the seventh.

Then Pedro Baez happened, and a four-run seventh inning looked as though it was going to doom the Dodgers in the series opener, but Cody Bellinger tied up the game Coors Field style with a two-run home run in the eighth and Chris Taylor and Brian Dozier both hit home runs in the ninth to give the Dodgers a 8-5 win.

———

The Dodgers got on the board first in the second inning. Enrique Hernandez doubled and scored on a Taylor sacrifice fly.

Kiké’s hit was great, but even MLB’s Cut4 knows what we really want.

There were a few defensive gems on the night. Yasmani Grandal made a great throw to mow down Nolan Arenado on a steal attempt in the bottom of the second to end the frame.

Arenado did make a rare error at third base in the first inning, but he followed that up with one of his signature highlight reel plays at the hot corner.

Charlie Blackmon also made a sensational running catch to rob Hernandez of extra bases after a 12-pitch at-bat in the fourth.

The Rockies tied it up in the home half of the fourth. The Rox cashed in a two-out walk to Carlos Gonzalez. Arenado, who had three hits on the night, took advantage of a poorly located 3-2 cutter up and over the plate from Stripling with a RBI double.

The Dodgers wasted another scoring opportunity in the sixth. Manny Machado had two hits on the night and started off the sixth with a single to center field, his 1,000th career base hit, but the Dodgers failed to get a clutch hit off Tyler Anderson with Machado in scoring position. Justin Turner and Matt Kemp both grounded out, and Cody Bellinger struck out.

Once the Dodgers were able to get to the Rockies bullpen in the seventh, the game started to unravel for Colorado. Joc Pederson blasted a pinch-hit solo shot off Scott Oberg. Then Max Muncy came off the bench and went the opposite way for a home run, giving the Dodgers a 3-1 lead. That was Muncy’s first home run since July 25.

Pedro Baez took over for Chicken Strip in the bottom of the seventh, and things got dicey when the Rockies loaded the bases with one out. Grandal and Baez get crossed up, and Arenado was able to come home to score after a passed ball was deflected off Grandal’s glove. Then Chris Iannetta went deep for a three-run blast off Baez to give the Rockies a 5-3 lead.

You can never say never at Coors Field. In the eighth inning, the Dodgers rallied with two outs when Cody Bellinger tied up the game 5-5 with a two-run home run off Seunghwan Oh.

The Rockies threatened in the eighth, but Caleb Ferguson was able to get the game to the ninth inning with the tie intact.

Ferguson’s scoreless inning was key, because Taylor opened the ninth with a leadoff homer off Wade Davis to take back the lead 6-5. Then Brian Dozier hit a doozy, a two-run home run to extend the Dodgers’ lead to three runs.

Scott Alexander shut the door on the Rockies in the ninth, and the Dodgers move back into a first place tie with the Arizona Diamondbacks with the win.

The Dodgers move their road trip to Denver on Thursday night as they look to put some distance between them and the Rockies in the standings. Colorado was eight games behind in the division as recent as June 28, but have come charging back into the playoff race.

The Rockies have the best record in the National League since June 28, winning 22 of 34 games that includes 10 of 13 within the NL West. Their hot streak has come to a bit of a halt recently though, losing seven of the last 10.

Colorado took two of three at Dodger Stadium at the end of June after losing five of the first six meetings between the two clubs this year. The Dodgers swept a three-game series at Coors Field to begin June, in a typical Coors slugfest, scoring 33 runs that weekend.

Nearly .500 this season at home, the Rockies have turned it on recently with 17 wins in their last 24.

Pitching Probables

Thursday, 5:40 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Ross Stripling tries to turn his second half around after giving up nine runs over his last two starts, failing to finish five innings in either. Tyler Anderson makes his third start against the Dodgers this season. The lefty is 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA, allowing five runs in 13 innings.

Friday, 5:40 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Like Stripling, Kenta Maeda has also struggled in the second half. The right-hander has allowed 13 runs in 17 innings over three starts since the All-Star break.

Jon Gray goes for the Rockies in his fifth start back since being recalled from a stint to the minors in early July. Gray is 2-0 with a 1.52 ERA over that time and the Rockies have won all four games.

Saturday, 5:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

Walker Buehler is starting to gather a little momentum as he continues building strength in his return from a rib injury earlier this season. The right-hander has looked more like himself the last two times out. Buehler gave up four runs over five innings back on June 2 at Coors Field in a 12-4 Dodgers win.

Kyle Freeland has been excellent for Colorado, going 10-7 with a 3.04 ERA this year. The lefty has allowed two or less runs in eight of his last 10 starts.

Sunday, 12:10 p.m. PT (SportsNet LA)

The Dodger starter for Sunday hasn’t officially been named yet but it’s likely that it’s Rich Hill. Opposing him will be Chad Bettis, who has given up at least five runs in six of his last eight, including nine in his last start. The Dodgers were one of the six games, putting five on Bettis in a 10-7 win at Coors.

The Dodgers on Thursday officially activated Ross Stripling from the 10-Day disabled list and optioned switch-pitcher Pat Venditte to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

After a stellar May and June, Stripling struggled through July as he approaches the most innings he has thrown in his professional career. The 28-year-old has already surpassed his big league career-high, hurling 104 innings in 2018. Mostly in the bullpen in 2017, Stripling only tossed 74 1⁄3innings last year in 49 appearances (two starts).

Despite a 4.73 ERA in five starts last month, the right-hander refused to give in to walks. With 30 strikeouts to just five walks in July, Stripling has struck out 119 overall against 15 walks.

Venditte didn’t appear during the series in Oakland while he was in his fifth stint with the Dodgers this year. In five games in the big leagues this season, Venditte has allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 1⁄3 innings.

The 33-year-old hasn’t appeared in a major league game since June 8.
