Theme of the night: Dingers.

The offense left nothing to chance for the Dodgers Friday, making Safeco Field look small and giving the bullpen plenty of wiggle room. The visiting team launched five home runs in support of a strong effort from Walker Buehler, cruising to an 11-1 win over the Mariners.

It was the sixth time the Dodgers have hit at least five homers this season. At least since 1908 — and it’s highly doubtful it was done before then — there have been only six teams to hit five homers in a game six different times in one season.

In list form:

The Dodgers have 5 homers tonight for the 6th time this season.
As good as Buehler was, the offense didn’t need quite that many home runs to win the game. The young flamethrower allowed just three hits over six innings, striking out eight against two walks.

Over his last four starts, Buehler has allowed just four runs in 25 1⁄3 innings as he continues to make his case as one of the best the Dodgers have in the rotation.

The only Mariner run came on a Ryon Healy solo shot in the fourth. Buehler finished his night having retired the final nine batters he faced.

By the time the Mariners scored their run, the Dodgers had already hit three homers of their own and had a 4-1 lead.

Yasmani Grandal got it going in the third with his 21st long ball of the year. With three hits in his last 36 plate appearances over ten games coming into the night, getting on base two times Friday was a change of pace.

The five home runs were somewhat symbolic of the whole team breaking out of an August slump. Manny Machado hit two of them to drive in three, hitting both to the deeper parts of the field between left and center. The Dodger shortstop had just nine extra-base hits in 26 game with the Dodgers before Friday.

Lefty Wade LeBlanc didn't last through the fifth, giving up seven runs to the Dodgers in 4 1⁄3 innings.

Then there was the two Dodgers who paved the way when the team was scorching hot in May and June, only to scuffle over the last month or so.

Max Muncy launched his 27th homer in the fourth and Matt Kemp smashed his 18th to center to cap a four-run seventh to put the game out of reach.

For Kemp, it was his 200th home run in a Dodger uniform. Only seven players have hit that many in Dodger blue, Kemp is the fourth to do it in Los Angeles.

All told, the Dodgers scored three or more runs in three different innings and started off the series by getting the offense flowing once again.

Up Next

The Dodgers and Mariners continue into the weekend with Rich Hill (5-4, 3.57) and Erasmo Ramirez (0-2, 6.75).

Taylor currently leads the NL in strikeouts

It hasn’t been a great year for Chris Taylor.

After a breakout 2017 campaign, Taylor has been struggling to recapture last years magic. Last season, Taylor hit .288 with 21 home runs and 72 RBI. He was one of the better surprises in all of baseball.

Currently for the season, Taylor is hitting .248. He has 13 home runs and 52 RBI. Not a huge drop-off by any means. In fact, he was near the leader board in runs batted in for the month of July. While his production isn’t at the level it was last year, he’s still one of the bigger offensive weapons the Dodgers have had this year.

The problem, and it’s a concerning one, are his strikeout numbers.

With 144 on the season, Taylor is currently leading the NL in strikeouts. He already has two more than last season while appearing in 20 less games.

Which brings up the question, why is Chris Taylor striking out so much?

For the 27-year-old, striking out is nothing new. In his career, Taylor has struck out 371 times in 1,245 career at-bats, which is just under 30 percent.

Among players with at least 440 at-bats, Chris Taylor is second in all of baseball with a strikeout percentage of 29.1 percentage.

Since June 28, Taylor has 64 strikeouts, by far the most across the MLB during that span. In only 158 at-bats, his 37 percent strikeout rate is also the highest across all of baseball.

The problem with Taylor is the fact he’s getting behind early on in almost two-thirds of his at-bats. 63 percent of the time, Taylor begins his at-bat with a strike, near the top among qualified hitters. When he starts the count 0-1, he strikes out 41 percent of the time.

If it seems like Taylor is behind in the count a lot, it’s because he is. He’s rarely ahead in the count, only seeing ball three 22.7 percent of the time.

A problem for Taylor is his inability to make contact, as he swings and misses on 13 percent of his pitches, which puts him near the top.

The slider has been Taylor’s biggest problem this season, as it’s responsible for 35 percent of his punch-outs. There’s no question that he’s aggressive on the pitch, as he swings at almost half of sliders thrown to him.

Last year, Taylor made a living off of hitting the fastball. He hit .322 and had an OPS of .942. This year it’s quite the opposite, as he’s hitting .208 with a .692 OPS.

22 percent of his strikeouts came on the fastball, where as this year it’s up to 28 percent.

With Taylor’s strikeout numbers up, and his swing percentage at an all-time high, its’ tough to really see if there is something Taylor has changed with his swing. At this point, it may just be a confidence thing in his head that’s only getting worse.

This weekend he will make his first return to Seattle since the trade. It will be interesting to see what kind of reception he receives from the fans and if he’s able to feed off of it and turn things around.

Where might he slot into a playoff rotation?

Coming into the season, folks wondered about Walker Buehler for a number of reasons — the most prominent being his innings restriction.

It was reported back in spring training that the official/unofficial number would be somewhere in the 140- to 150-inning range. This being his second full year back from Tommy John surgery, that’s more than a fair number.

Well here we are in the middle of August and Buehler is sitting at just 81 1⁄3 innings at the MLB level and 16 innings in the minors. The fact that he has missed time with injuries has been somewhat of a blessing in disguise, if that makes sense.

If Buehler hadn’t missed time with the microfracture in his rib, he’d be a lot closer to his innings limit than he is right now. And, oddly enough, the rest prevented the Dodgers from needing to implement a midseason shutdown or throttling his workload, much like they did with Julio Urias in the past. I’m glad they didn’t have to do that, but I’m also not exactly thrilled Buehler was hurt. It’s a double-edged sword.

Since Buehler has fully returned to the rotation (after the poor relief outing against the Cubs), he has been really good: 3.10 ERA, 4.64 FIP (inflated by six home runs allowed in 29 innings), 20.7 K-BB% and a .302 wOBA against. Even with the homers allowed, those are some solid numbers.

On the season — and he just turned 24 at the end of July — he has a 3.32 ERA, 3.36 FIP, 20.2 K-BB% and a .274 wOBA against. The MLB-average for ERA, FIP, K-BB% and wOBA are 4.16, 4.16, 13.6 and .315. He has been much better than that in every aspect. Buehler is truly showing why he was a composite Top 15 prospect in baseball coming into the season.

Not only is he pitching well, his limited workload should have him in line to make some postseason starts, should the Dodgers make it to the playoffs. FanGraphs depth charts projects him to throw 39 more innings this season, which would give him a total of 136 1⁄3 on the season. If his limit truly is as high as 150, he should be able to make a start or two in October. The only issue I could foresee is the Dodgers having too many healthy starters for October. I know that’s highly unlikely because baseball, but let’s see how Buehler might fit into a postseason rotation:

Clayton Kershaw (obvi)

Rich Hill

Walker Buehler

Alex Wood

Hyun-Jin Ryu

Kenta Maeda

Ross Stripling

It’s pretty obvious that Maeda and Stripling will pitch out of the bullpen in a postseason pitching staff, mostly because they’re more versatile and have already been moved to the ‘pen. And since there’s no need for a No. 5 starter come the playoffs, that leaves one spot for Buehler, Ryu or Wood.

Wood pitched well in the playoffs last season, but he seems like the most obvious guy who would go to the bullpen in this scenario. Ryu is going to have trouble pitching out of the ‘pen because he needs extra time to get loose, and Buehler is, frankly, too good to waste as a reliever (also, he hasn’t taken well to the role in the pros).

We’re getting a little ahead of ourselves here. The Dodgers are 1 1⁄2 games out of a playoff spot and are not guaranteed anything. But if they do make it, they could have a fireballing, young starter to use, which is something they haven’t had in years past.

The future is really bright for Buehler. He could anchor the Dodgers’ rotation for years to come. For now, he could be the wild card in October, but the bats have to get going first.

Rain outs and off days caused nearly half of the Dodgers farm system to not play a game.

Player of the day

Isaac Anderson shut the Storm down. In seven innings, the right-hander allowed zero runs while striking out nine. He also issued zero walks and only allowed four hits. His nine strikeouts are a season-high. It’s also the second time he’s gone seven innings.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

Oklahoma City had as many errors as they had runs, as they fell to the Omaha Storm Chasers (Royals) 4-3.

Tim Locastro was hit by a pitch to lead off the game and then came home to score on a double from Donovan Solano.

The Storm would score three in the third inning thanks to five singles, a walk and a sac-fly.

Trailing 4-1 as they head into the seventh inning, OKC put together a comeback. Connor Joe and Will Smith had back-to-back hits, putting runners on third and second with zero outs. Andrew Toles got an RBI groundout, and Rocky Gale followed with a sac-fly, cutting the Dodgers’ deficit to only one run.

The one-run cushion would be enough as Omaha held on for the victory.

Logan Bawcom got the start, and had his second-shortest outing of the year. The 29-year-old only lasted 2 2⁄3 innings, allowing three runs on four hits and three walks.

Advanced Class-A Rancho Cucamonga

Behind seven scoreless innings from Isaac Anderson, the Quakes defeated the Lake Elsinore Storm (Padres) 9-1.

The scoring began in the second inning when Brandon Montgomery doubled to left, driving in a run. Jared Walker would then hit his 14th home run of the season, making the score 3-0.

The Quakes hit back-to-back homers in the fifth, as Christian Santana (22) and Carlos Rincon (8) made it 5-0.

Three more runs were tacked on in the eighth as Nick Yarnall (5) went deep. A Christian Santana double would bring in two more runs, giving the Quakes a 9-1 lead and ultimately their 73rd win of the season.

Class-A Great Lakes

A two-out rally in extra innings helped the Lakes pick up a victory. With two outs, Hunter Feduccia singled to center field. Josh McLain then hit it to third base, but an error on the throw to first base would bring Feduccia in to win the game.

The Ogden Raptors were off Thursday night. They will host a weekend series versus the Billings Mustangs (Reds).
