Hyun-Jin Ryu starred at the plate and on the mound, Justin Turner drives in five and Manny Machado hits go-ahead homer

LOS ANGELES — Before the game, manager Dave Roberts said this season’s bench might be the best he’s had in his three years with the Dodgers. After today’s game, he might have another right-handed bat to add to it.

After getting out of a bases loaded jam in the top of fifth, it was a little surprising to see Hyun-Jin Ryu batting with two outs and no one on in the bottom of the inning.

But then Ryu would get his second single of the game and that would begin a rally that would produce the go-ahead runs for the Dodgers. The Dodgers would go on to win 7-3 and sweep the Padres.

Back to the rally, after Ryu’s single, Brian Dozier walked. Justin Turner followed that with a double to left field that scored two runs that momentarily tied the game 2-2. Manny Machado then came up and hit the ball out to give the Dodgers the lead.

San Diego starter Robbie Ervin did not make it out of the fifth inning. He pitched 4⅔ innings and gave up four runs and eight hits.

Hyun-Jin Ryu seem to always have someone on base as he gave up 11 hits in 5⅔ innings. But he limited the damage to two runs. Ryu also struck out eight Padres.

In the sixth inning, the Dodgers took advantage of two walks and a wild pitch when Turner had his second consecutive two-RBI hit to make it 6-2.

Following Ryu, Pedro Baez got the last out in the sixth. Dylan Floro had to deal with some runners on base but he would pitch two scoreless innings.

Turner decided four runs batted it wasn’t enough, he hit another run-scoring double that produced the Dodgers seventh run. The five runs batted in for Turner matched a career high that he has now done five times, three times in 2018.

Yimi Garcia pitched the ninth inning. After he gave up a solo home run to Hunter Renfroe, he got the next three hitters to hit fly balls in the ballpark and the Dodgers finished off the Padres with a 7-3 win.

Up Next

The Dodgers will take a travel day tomorrow before playing their final regular season inter-league series at Texas. Walker Buehler (6-4, 2.96 ERA) will take the mound for the Dodgers while the Rangers have not announced their starting pitchers for the two-game series.
