The Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday acquired third baseman David Freese in a trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for minor league infielder Jesus Manuel Valdez.

Freese has played in 94 games for Pittsburgh this season, hitting .282 with 29 runs, 10 doubles, one triple, nine home runs and 42 RBI along with a .780 OPS. The veteran infielder hits lefties well, going 31-for-109 (.284) this season. Freese has similar numbers this season against righties, hitting .281 (36-for-128).

The 35-year-old has mostly played third base in his career, but can also play first base. After Friday night’s win against Arizona, manager Dave Roberts said that the Dodgers will use him at both positions against left-handed pitching.

“We’re going to use him against left-handed pitching. He’ll be a bat off the bench against righties,” Roberts said. “He can play the corners, first and third. He’s a veteran presence, offensive, and a great clubhouse guy.”

Freese was part of the St. Louis Cardinals’ 2011 World Series championship team where he earned the World Series MVP Award. In 51 career postseason games, Freese owns a .281/.357/.517 slash line with eight homers and 30 RBI.

Valdez, 20, made his professional debut with the DSL Dodgers this season after signing with the organization on July 20, 2017. In 60 games with the DSL Dodgers Guerrero, he has hit .230 with 44 runs, 11 doubles, four triples, six home runs and 27 RBI along with a .343 on-base percentage.

To create room on the 40-man roster, the Dodgers transferred right-handed pitcher Erik Goeddel to the 60-day disabled list (right elbow inflammation).

As always, Eric Stephen has the math for the payroll.

The Dodgers have relied so heavily on the long-ball this season. They’ve been even more reliant on the solo homers as well.

Tonight was no different, as two late solo shots helped the Dodgers earn a crucial 3-2 victory over the first-place Diamondbacks.

Kike Hernandez hit a pinch-hit solo home run in the seventh to tie the game, and Justin Turner hit a solo homer in the eighth to give the Dodgers the lead, and the win.

The D-Backs jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to a two-run shot from Paul Goldschmidt. For Arizona, this is the second night in a row all of their runs have come via the home run.

Hyun-Jin Ryu shut the D-Backs down the rest of the way. Ryu would go seven innings, striking out five and not issuing a run the rest of the game. Over the course of the next six innings, Arizona failed to get a man into scoring position.

Cody Bellinger led off the second inning with a double, but the offense was unable to bring him in.

For the second inning in a row, the Dodgers started the inning with a base hit. Yasiel Puig singled, and eventually would find himself on third after a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch advanced him.

Joc Pederson, who has struggled over the last few weeks, singled to right, bringing in Puig with his 48th RBI of the season, cutting the deficit to one run.

Turner would follow with a single to put runners on first and second with one out. Manny Machado struck out, and Bellinger lined out, ending the chances for LA to tack on more runs.

The Dodgers offense was non-existent until the 7th inning, when the long ball helped them tie the game.

Pinch-hitting for Ryu, Kike Hernandez hit a 2-2 fastball over the right-field fence, tying the game at two.

Dylan Floro pitched the eighth, relieving the brilliant Ryu.

Ketel Marte would reach first on an error to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and wild pitch, Marte stood at third base with two out. Steven Stouza stepped to the plate, with a chance to give the D-Backs the lead. After working an eight-pitch at-bat, Floro got Souza to ground out, escaping the inning untouched.

Zack Greinke went back out there in the bottom of the eighth, and it proved to be a costly decision. On the first pitch of the inning, Justin Turner hit his 11th homer of the year, putting the Dodgers ahead by one run.

After a rough week, Kenley Jansen came in and got the save. A one-out Goldschmidt double would put a runner on second base. Jansen proceeded to strike out David Peralta, and got Eduardo Escobar to ground out, ending the game and moving the Dodgers to one game out of first place.

Up Next

The Dodgers look to move into a first-place tie on Saturday night, as they’ll send Clayton Kershaw (6-5, 2.39 ERA) to the mound to face Patrick Corbin (10-5, 3.15 ERA)

The Dodgers went out and added yet another bullpen arm, acquiring right-hander Ryan Madson from the Washington Nationals. On the season, Madson is 2-5 with a 5.28 ERA.

August has been particularly rough for the 38-year-old. In 6 2⁄3 innings, he’s allowed seven runs. His ERA is the highest it’s been since 2006.

Last year, Madson saw one of the better seasons of his career. In the first-half with Oakland, he owned a 2.06 ERA with a 0.78 WHIP. After being traded mid-season to Washington, he was even better, posting a 1.37 ERA.

Hopefully for Madson and the Dodgers, he can recapture what has made him a successful pitcher throughout his career and help LA make a postseason push.

And yes, the Dodgers are able to remain under the luxury threshold.

It was a tough day for minor-league affiliates, with four teams allowing a combined 37 runs.

Player of the day

Daniel Corcino did it all on Thursday night. The right-hander threw six innings of one hit ball, while striking out eight. He helped his own cause, by having three base hits of his own.

Triple-A Oklahoma City

A three-run fourth inning would be the difference maker in OKC’s 4-2 victory over the Iowa Cubs.

Andrew Toles led the fourth inning off with his seventh homer of the season. Matt Beaty and Edwin Rios would have back-to-back hits, and would then come in to score an a single from Rocky Gale.

Daniel Corcino held the Cubs in check all night. The 28-year-old had eight strikeouts in six innings, while allowing only one run. Helping his own cause, Corcino had three base hits on the night, raising his average to .385.

Double-A Tulsa

The Naturals (Royals) needed only eight hits to score eight runs, defeating the Drillers 8-4.

Through three, the game was knotted at three. It was in the fourth where Northwest Arkansas opened the flood gates.

After two walks and an error, Alex Liddi stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded. He singled, bringing in two. Anderson Miller followed with a single of his own, making the score 6-3.

They’d tack on two more in the fifth to give them a five-run cushion.

DJ Peters would hit his 27th home run in the eighth.

Single-A Rancho Cucamonga

Carlos Rincon would hit three home runs, but it wouldn’t be enough, as the Quakes fell to the Lancaster JetHawks (Rockies) 11-7. Lancaster scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Rincon gave the Quakes the lead in the second after hitting a two-run homer to center. He hit a two-run shot yet again in the sixth, putting Rancho back on top, 4-3.

The Quakes headed into the bottom of the eighth down one, but quickly lost control, allowing six runs to fall behind seven.

Rincon would hit his third homer of the game in the ninth, but the rally fell short.

Class-A Great Lakes

The Loons would have the same amount of hits as the Lugnuts (Blue Jays), 12. Unfortunately, they would score eight fewer runs, falling to Lansing 10-2.

The Lakes were 2-for-12 with runners in scoring position and left 13 runners on base.

Eight of the nine starters had base hits, with four players having multi-hit games.

Short season Ogden

Four base hits would bring in two runs for the Chukars (Royals), as a ninth-inning rally sparked an 8-6 victory over the Raptors.

A single, walk and a while pitch would help Ogden score three in the eighth to tie the game at six.

Kevin Malisheski would allow four runs and four walks in 4 1⁄3 innings of work.

Rookie Level Arizona

A six run sixth inning would be the difference maker, as the Dodgers defeated the Cubs 7-3.

A walk and a hit-by-pitch would put two on. With two outs, Ismael Alcantara singled, plating a run. Juan Zabala would triple, bringing in two more. Back-to-back errors by the Cubs would help the Dodgers score another.
