Giant’s bullpen pitches 5⅔ scoreless inning in 3-1 win

The Giants used nine singles, five walks and a well-timed stolen base to beat the Dodgers 3-1 and leave both teams at 2-2 after the weekend series. The Giants used six relief pitchers and they pitched 5⅓ scoreless innings to hold down the Dodgers on Sunday night.

After scoring 17 runs in the first two games, the Dodgers only scored five runs in the last two games of the series.

Neither team produced an extra-base hit until A.J. Pollock doubled to lead off the bottom of the ninth. But the Dodgers could do nothing more and they will head out on the road carrying a two-game losing streak.

As they had done in two of the first three games of this series, the Giants scored first when Darin Ruf singled home Mike Yastrzemski in the top of the third inning.

The Dodgers answered the Giants with their own run in the bottom of the third. Mookie Betts singled and with two outs, stole his first base of the season. Justin Turner walked and Cody Bellinger lined single to right to score Betts and tie the game.

In the sixth inning, two singles against Brusdar Graterol gave the Giants an opportunity to take the lead and after Adam Kolarek got a Brandon Crawford to fly out, Mauricio Dubon singled to left to make it 2-1 Giants.

The Giants used a rare stolen base by Ruf and a two-out single Donovan Solano to extend their lead 3-1 after the top of the seventh. Ruf had one career stolen base before stealing that base.

The Dodgers had their best chance to tie the game when Turner and Bellinger had back-to-back singles with one out in the bottom of the eighth. After Chris Taylor grounded out, Corey Seager was maybe hit by a pitch (replay showed that the ball might have just hit the bat).

That meant Kiké Hernández was up with the bases-loaded but he would ground out to third to end the threat.

The Dodgers would end the game going 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position but with four of those at-bats coming in their last five plate appearances, it was more a case of non-action than any frustration with leaving runners on this night.

Solid start for Urías

Julio Urías pitched five innings, allowing one run and five hits. He had three strikeouts and three walks. The Giants had at least one runner on base in every inning but did not square up too many pitches against Urías.

Urías faced 22 batters, made 78 pitches with 51 strikes. His next start will likely be in Phoenix next weekend against the Diamondbacks.

Jansen makes his first appearance of the season

Kenley Jansen 2020 debut was not in a save situation but having gone the first three games without pitching, it was inevitable that he would pitch on Sunday.

Jansen came into the game trailing by two runs in the ninth inning. He retired the side in order, striking out Yastrzemski to get the first out of the inning.

The Dodgers begin their longest road trip of this season as they go to three cities in nine days. Their first stop will be in Houston for a two-game series starting on Tuesday evening. Right-hander Walker Buehler will make his 2020 debut against Astros left-hander Framber Valdez, first pitch is scheduled for 6:10 p.m. PT.

Pollock was in Arizona, where he and his wife brought their daughter, born premature in March, home for the first time on Saturday.

A.J. Pollock is back in the Dodgers lineup on Sunday night, starting at designated hitter and batting eighth in the series finale against the Giants. But the more important news is why he was away in the first place.

Pollock didn’t play the last two games because he was in Arizona, where he and his wife Kate brought home their daughter, Maddi Mae, from the hospital. Their daughter was born three months premature on March 19, and was in the hospital the last four months.

“Yesterday was special,” Pollock posted on Instagram on Sunday. “After 128 days Kate and I finally got to see our little girl together. Even better is we got to take her home. Welcome home Maddi Mae!”

It was a trying four months for the Pollocks. In an interview with UCLA Health in June, Pollock said due to coronavirus regulations at the hospital, he and his wife couldn’t be with Maddi Mae in the hospital together, so they alternated shifts one at a time.

To make matters worse, Pollock tested positive for COVID-19 in June. It delayed his reporting to Dodgers summer camp, but more importantly he and his wife had to quarantine. He couldn’t see Maddi Mae for 14 days, and his wife couldn’t see the baby for 10 days.

“It was tough, especially on her,” Pollock said told reporters on July 17. “When you tell a mom you can’t see her baby, it’s not great. It’s a really strange feeling. You have a lot of joy seeing your daughter, but she’s one pound. There’s no relief she’s born because of all the challenges ahead. It’s been a wild ride. It’s been emotional, it’s been amazing, it’s been scary, it’s been frustrating. She’s in a really good place now. When she’s ready to come home she’ll come home.”

Now, she’s home, which is wonderful news.

The Dodgers kept Pollock’s absence a secret, to avoid letting the Giants know they were playing shorthanded.

“That’s something that obviously, for a competitive advantage, we want to keep under wraps,” manager Dave Roberts said via conference call Sunday.

As for the rest of the lineup, with left-hander Drew Smyly starting on the mound for San Francisco the Dodgers are beginning their alternating hitters on the right side first, with Mookie Betts batting leadoff followed by Max Muncy hitting second, and so on.

Chris Taylor gets the start in left field, and Kiké Hernandez gets the call at second base. Will Smith starts behind the plate, catching Julio Urías.

For the Giants, Mauricio Dubón is making his first major league start in center field after playing the final two innings there on Saturday. It’s his first professional outfield start since starting five games in the Arizona Fall League in 2016.

It’s the third position Dubón will have started at in four games. He played second base in the first two games of this series, started at shortstop Saturday, and now center field. Neat.

LA has 9 doubles in their first 3 games

The Dodgers of the last three years have their top three home run seasons in franchise history, a combination of incredible talent in the current era of baseball. But it’s not just home runs where this team has excelled. Since 2017 the Dodgers have had three of their six best years hitting doubles, too.

Corey Seager is the usual go-to for Dodgers doubles talk. He’s only 26 and is already is one of only six Dodgers with multiple seasons of 40 or more doubles. Seager co-led the National League with 44 doubles last season, and he seemingly had a double in every Dodgers intrasquad game.

Seager kept that up with doubles on both Thursday and Friday.

Justin Turner did him one better, hitting a double on Thursday, one more on Friday, then hit two doubles on Saturday. Turner is one of only eight Dodgers with a double in each of the team’s first three games. No Dodger has doubled in the first four games of the season.

Mookie Betts hasn’t double yet this season, but he’s topped 40 doubles in each of the last five years — nobody else in the majors has more than three such seasons — averaging 43 per year. Fenway Park helped him, no doubt, but Betts also averaged 21 doubles on the road the last three seasons.

We’re only through three games so far this season, but the Dodgers already have nine doubles. Keeping up that pace over a season of any length seems impossible, given that the club record for doubles per game is 1.97, by Brooklyn in 1930. In 2017, when the Dodgers hit a franchise-record 312 doubles, they averaged 1.93 doubles per game.

The major league record for doubles in a season is 376 by the 2008 Rangers, who averaged 2.32 per game. The record for most doubles per game is 2.42 by the 1930 Cardinals.

To top that record in 60 games would require hitting at least 146 doubles. The Dodgers record for most doubles in a 60-game stretch is 135 (2.25 per game), by the 1930 Brooklyn club from their third through 62nd game that year.

I’m not sure if that’s doable for these Dodgers, but maybe hitting two doubles per game is. We have 57 more games to find out.

One of the many adjustments for the 2020 MLB season

While the game on the field is mostly the same, just about everything else surrounding baseball is different than any other year in major league history.

Players can’t come to the ballpark as early as many are used to, which no clubhouses open more than five hours before game time. There’s no milling around in the clubhouse, and meetings — now much smaller in nature — can’t last longer than 15 minutes in any confined space.

Extra dugout and bullpen space was added, and players for the most part are socially distanced throughout the game, and any celebrations are somewhat muted, or at least are supposed to be to limit extra touching.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts noted the frequent Zoom calls, and less traffic when getting to the Dodger Stadium this season, but one change about 2020 stood out the most.

“Wearing a mask in a game is probably the strangest because I just feel a little bit suffocated at times, but it’s certainly worth it,” he said.

All Tier 1 individuals — which includes players, coaches, bullpen catchers, training and medical staffs — are required to wear “appropriate face covering at all times in club facilities,” with the exception of players during games, per the MLB operations manual. Others in uniform, like Roberts, aren’t required to wear the masks while on the field during a game, but otherwise need to wear them.

Roberts during workouts and intrasquad games during summer camp often wore a particular mask, that covered a large portion of his face and wrapped around his neck.

“I had this really good one, this gray one, but my daughter said I was wearing it too much, even though I washed it,” Roberts said Saturday. “She got tired of seeing that one so I had to change.”

Roberts since then has worn a variety of masks, including a Black Lives Matter mask. He said the Chargers sent him one as well, and on Saturday was doing his daily interview in the press room with a disposable blue medical mask around his neck that he said he has about 100 of in his office.
