4-run 7th against Jake McGee the difference

The Rangers rallied for four runs in the seventh inning to beat the Dodgers, 6-2 in the opener of their weekend series on Friday night in Arlington.

Jake McGee is one of the many contributors to a deep and thriving Dodgers bullpen this season, and before Friday he allowed one run on four hits in his 13 appearances, facing 42 batters.

The left-hander faced five batters in the seventh inning on Friday, but allowed four hits and all of them scored. The go-ahead hit was a solo home run to lead off the inning by Derek Dietrich, who was a late addition to the lineup at first base when the Rangers placed Danny Santana on the injured list with an elbow sprain.

Three singles followed against McGee, then a double and sacrifice fly against Dylan Floro capped the big inning.

The Dodgers had no real answer for Rangers starter Mike Minor, who kept them off balance through six scoreless innings, but it wasn’t for lack of opportunities. They had two runners on base with zero or one out in three of the first four innings, but everyone was stranded thanks to Minor limiting them to 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

One of those outs was arguably the most important of the game, when Justin Turner had designs on a three-run home run, but center fielder Leody Taveras had other ideas.

Once Minor was out of the game, the Dodgers immediately pounced on reliever Joely Rodriguez in the seventh. Doubles by Will Smith and Corey Seager plated one run, and a single by Turner tied the game.

Turner then stole second base, but felt something in his hamstring in doing so, and left the game with a trainer. Dave Roberts said after the game that they are hopeful it’s more a cramp than a mild strain, but that Turner won’t play on Saturday.

The Dodgers were within striking distance in the seventh thanks to Dustin May, who continued to put down roots in the starting rotation. May lasted six innings for the third time in his last five starts, allowing only two runs in a third-inning rally.

May has allowed one or two runs in each of his seven starts this season.

On Friday he also induced a season-high nine swinging strikes, and struck out three.

Mitch White made his big league debut in the eighth inning, allowing a single but pitching a scoreless inning, with one strikeout. On a conference call earlier Friday, White talked about what his major league debut might be like.

“I’ll be juiced, whenever it comes,” White said. “Usually I get a little anxious beforehand, when I know it’s possible. Then I start throwing the ball and it’s like, ‘Alright, here we go.’”

Dodgers are 8-1 in interleague play this season

The Dodgers get their first look at the new Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas, with their weekend series against the Rangers.

It’s not to be confused with Globe Life Park, the Rangers’ old home, where the Dodgers were 9-6 in interleague play, including winning both games in their last trip there in 2018. That stadium had many names, including The Ballpark in Arlington and Rangers Ballpark in Arlington in games the Dodgers played there.

“It’s a beautiful ballpark. The turf, the playing surface is comparable, pretty similar to Arizona,” manager Dave Roberts said on a conference call Friday. “The outfield is quirky, the wall and left center field. In center field, right center, there’s some nooks and crannies there.

“It’s playing bigger than people have expected. So I think that that’s probably why some of the home run numbers for the home team are down.”

There have been 24 home runs hit in 16 games at Globe Life Field this season, including only seven by the Rangers. But in Texas road games, 39 home runs have been hit. Rangers games have averaged 7.94 runs in Texas, and 10.21 runs on the road.

Texas has lost 10 of its last 11 games.

The Rangers are dead last in MLB in runs scored (3.6 per game), wRC+ (62) and offensive fWAR (-1.6), and 29th in OPS+ (71). They are last in batting average (.208), 29th in on-base percentage (.286) and slugging percentage (.337), and 28th in home runs (24).

Texas has scored no more than four runs in any of their last 10 games, including nine total runs in the last five games.

Dustin May faces that lineup, while Mike Minor starts for Texas.

The roof will be closed for this game, per the Rangers.

Roster move

The Rangers had two lineup scratches. Danny Santana was set to start at first base, but was placed on the injured list with a right elbow sprain. Rougned Odor was scratched with a right eye infection.

Texas recalled Ronald Guzman to take Santana’s place on the roster. In the lineup, Nick Solak moved from left field to second base for Odor, Derek Dietrich now starts at first base, and Scott Heineman starts in left field.

Robinson: “If you’re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion, you’re wasting your life.”

Jackie Robinson Day is being celebrated throughout Major League Baseball on Friday, and the league released a video narrated by Dodgers outfielder Mookie Betts, directed by Randy Wilkins, which honors his legacy and quotes Robinson throughout.

Here is the transcript of Betts’ narration:

The most luxurious possession, the richest treasure anybody has is his personal dignity. If I had a room jammed with trophies, awards, and citations, and a child of mine came into the room and asked what I had done in defense of those fighting, and I had to tell that child I kept quiet, that I had been timid, I would have to mark myself a total failure in the business of living.

I cannot say I have it made while our country drives full speed ahead to a deeper rift between men and women of varying colors, speeds along a course towards more and more racism. Life is not a spectator sport. If you’re going to spend your whole life in the grandstand just watching what goes on, in my opinion, you’re wasting your life.

Until every child can have an equal opportunity in youth and manhood, until hunger is not only immoral but illegal, until hatred is recognized as a disease, a scourge, an epidemic, and treated as such, until racism and sexism are conquered, until that day Jackie Robinson and no one else can say he has it made. There’s not an American in this country free until every one of us is free.

MLB released a statement saying: “Through a mix of archival footage and photos from Jackie’s life, and modern visuals of peaceful protests, we recognize that Jackie’s words still ring true today. ‘4 Us 2 Remember’ reminds us that Jackie’s legacy does not live on only through the players who wear 42, but also through everyone who stands against injustice.”

There was no MLB on April 15 this year — which is when No. 42 is usually remembered — so Jackie Robinson Day was moved to Aug. 28, the 75th anniversary of his first meeting with Branch Rickey. This is only the second time in the last 16 years the Dodgers are on the road on Jackie Robinson Day, having played in San Francisco in 2014.

Jackie’s daughter Sharon Robinson narrated an essay on MLB Network about that meeting, and the impact of Robinson’s legacy:

“What do you want the future to say about the moment we lived, the chance we had to move the world forward?
Despite the change in date, given the events of the past week, with players and teams postponing games to protest racial injustice, this just might be the most impactful Jackie Robinson Day since it was instituted in 1997.

I know everything sounds terrible by my account, Jackie, but maybe…perhaps, we are merely in the middle and not the beginning. There’s also what feels like an awakening happening. People are paying attention. Changes may be on the horizon. The up and comers in the league are different. Different in the most incredible way. The league was saying “let the kids play” but still allowing things like unwritten rules to be a part of the game. But these “kids” are saying no, they’re pushing back, they’re having fun playing baseball. They’re dancing and singing in the dugouts. They’re rocking partially buttoned jerseys and gold chains. They are… being their whole selves and the energy is contagious. Hopefully one day what they bring to the game will be the standard and not the exception.
