He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning

Trevor Bauer truly knows how to keep us on the edge of our seats, that’s for sure. Making his Dodgers debut, LA’s biggest offseason addition took a no-hitter into the seventh inning... at Coors Field. Truly something that isn’t an easy feat.

Things fell off the rails in the seventh inning as he allowed four runs, but it was still an overall great outing from the reining NL Cy Young Award winner.

“He was in control the entire game,” manager Dave Roberts said following the game. “He left a couple pitches up late. Overall, I thought it was a fantastic outing.”

Through the first six innings, Bauer had struck out nine and issued only one walk along while not allowing a hit. Then in the seventh, he allowed four runs thanks to two separate two-run homers. He added another strikeout, finishing the game with 10.

“Break down the hitters and what their strengths and weaknesses are,” Bauer said when asked about his preparation for his first game with his new team. “Get on the same page with my catcher. Signs, sequences, different things like that. Physical preparation. Go out there and try to embarrass people.”

He certainly did that, as through the first 2⁄3 of the game he looked practically untouchable. Bauer got 15 swing-and-misses, with eight of them coming on his cutter which was his bread and butter all night.

“I got in a rhythm with the cutter,” he said. “It’s usually my best strike pitch. Overall I thought everything was pretty good.”

He knew he was throwing a no-hitter, but said that he didn’t care too much and it wasn’t something he was overthinking, especially considering the fact he was doing it at Coors Field, the most hitter-friendly park in all of baseball.

“I think the whole “not favorable to pitchers” thing is overblown,” he said. “Guys come in and beat themselves mentally. I don’t really care. If it happens, it happens. Unless you strike out 27 guys, there are going to be balls put in play. It’s luck whether or not they’re hit at people. I look at it as luck and just try to focus on my preparation. That’s where I try to focus.”

Bauer said that he didn’t have a chance to go back and watch film on his pitches, saying he can’t watch video anymore thanks to the new “Astros rule”. Yup, we’re one start into his Dodgers career and he’s already bagging on the 2017 AL West champions, you gotta love it.

With 10 strikeouts on the night, Bauer will be donating $10,000 to the Think Together foundation, an after-school STEM and robotics programming for middle school students in southeast LA.. Earlier on Friday, Bauer tweeted that he’d be donating $1,000 for every strikeout to a foundation during the season, with a different one every month. So, not only do you get to root for him to get as many strikeouts as possible to help the Dodgers, he’s doing it for a great cause.

“It’s something I’m passionate about,” Bauer said. “No need to brag about the things I do, but I wanted to make this public with the Dodgers foundation. Obviously I grew up in Southern California and I’m passionate about education and want to give our youth opportunities. I look forward to supporting more organizations as the year goes along.”

There was nearly a no-hitter, a cat, and Coors!

I don’t even know where to begin with this one.

Trevor Bauer was pitching a no-hitter. Coors Field stuff happened in the seventh inning. There was a cat that ran on the field. Ultimately, the Dodgers won the game 11-6 and picked up their first win of the season.

Let’s try and recap this one in case you missed it, because you missed a dandy. How about we begin with Bauer, who made his Dodgers debut on Friday night. He was fantastic through the first six innings, and when I say fantastic... I mean it.

Bauer didn’t allow a hit through the first six innings and had nine strikeouts, and he just looked untouchable out there. Then, the seventh inning from hell happened. Just like that, Bauer went from nine outs away from a no-hitter to allowing four runs. He allowed two two-run home runs and all of a sudden his dominant outing turned into a decent outing.

Still, don’t let the box score fool you. He looked fantastic and his stuff was electric. He finished the night with 10 strikeouts and two walks.

On to the offense. They were quite good. After going 0-for-100 with runners in scoring position and stranding 25 runners on base in the opener, the offense flipped a switch and were quite clutch tonight. They were 8-for-18 with runners in scoring position.

Through two games this season, the Dodgers have scored 16 runs and have 31 hits. Remarkably, they still don’t have a home run.*

*They technically do, but the MLB rulebook says they don’t

The Dodgers hit four singles in the top half of the first inning, including RBI knocks from Max Muncy and Will Smith, putting them up 2-0 very quickly. They added two more runs in the second inning thanks to three consecutive doubles with two outs, extending their lead to 4-0.

LA loaded the bases in the fourth inning and Justin Turner brought in two with an RBI single. Cody Bellinger brought in another with a groundout. Speaking of Turner, he now has reached base in 34 consecutive games dating back to last season, the longest active streak in Major-League Baseball.

The Dodgers sprinkled in a few more runs throughout the game to give them 11.

Oh, and how could I possibly forget. There was a cat that ran onto the field. #COORS

It’s new for him, but he’s up for the challenge

There were a lot of notable takeaways from the Dodgers this spring, but one of the biggest was the improvement from Gavin Lux across the board. He was fantastic at the plate and played pretty good defense, essentially earning him an every day spot in the lineup.

“Any time you get results, it’s a nice confidence booster,” Lux said to the media on Friday afternoon. “I don’t base how I feel on results. It’s literally how mechanics feel and how my swing feels. For me, that’s where I’m putting my focus.”

I know he doesn’t read too much into numbers, but his stats were pretty great this spring. In 19 games in March, Lux hit .314 with an OPS of just under .800. He hit a homer, drove in six runs and had four doubles.

Manager Dave Roberts has praised Lux all spring, talking about his improvement and how he expects him to keep progressing as the season goes on.

“I think it means a lot, coming from your manager and someone you respect a lot,” Lux said. “It’s a confidence booster. Any time your manager says that it holds more weight than if someone else said it.”

For Lux, he doesn’t really care too much about what his numbers look like at the end of the season. Obviously he hopes they’re good, but he’s more focused on helping the Dodgers win and being a table setter at the bottom of the lineup. He hopes to grind out at bats and try to make as many plays in the field as possible. His focus is just figuring out a process that works for him with his routine on a daily basis.

Usually when you’re a top prospect in the game, you soon become one of the top hitters in your lineup. Not Lux. With such a stacked Dodgers lineup, he finds himself hitting either seventh or eighth in the lineup. When asked about it, he doesn’t recall a time in his playing career where he’s consistently been at the bottom of the lineup.

“I don’t think I’ve hit too far down in the order,” he said. “It’s a first. But look who’s ahead of me. There’s a lot of really good players and hitters. If I could be a pest at the bottom, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Dodgers news and notes

Dave Roberts still doesn’t have an ETA as to when we can see either Brusdar Graterol or Joe Kelly return from the Injured List. He did say he could expect Graterol to return before Kelly does. Both players are at the alternate site, but not throwing to hitters yet.

Austin Barnes is doing fine. He’s still expected to be in the lineup tomorrow.
