LA hopes you don’t judge their road trip book by its covers

Dodgers pitching was mostly strong, and the offense that was still standing looked like it did just enough to make it hold up. But before Los Angeles could leave Oakland with a sweep, the A’s scored once in the ninth and once in the 10th for a 4-3 win, snapping the Dodgers’ five-game winning streak.

Kenley Jansen, tasked with protecting a one-run lead in the ninth, walked two and allowed a single, throwing only nine of his 22 pitches for strikes. A sacrifice fly to center field by Elvin Andrus brought home the tying run with two outs in the frame.

“It’s uncharacteristic for him to not have the command like that,” manager Dave Roberts said. “There were some misfires in there, some spiked fastballs that just doesn’t happen with him. We’ll dig into it.”

In the 10th inning, the A’s free runner on second to open the frame against Jimmy Nelson advanced to third on a fly out to center field, then scored on a walk-off single by Mitch Moreland on a 1-2 pitch.

Trevor Bauer pitched into the seventh inning for a second straight start, allowing only a pair of runs. One came on a hit by pitch, two steals by Ramon Laureano, and a wild pitch, and the other was much easier for Oakland, a solo home run by Matt Chapman.

“It was a mixed bag,” Bauer said. “I thought my stuff was really good, and I was happy with some mid-inning adjustments I made. I was just behind a lot, 1-0, 2-0. I gotta clean that up.”

Half of Bauer’s 20 outs recorded were via strikeout, putting him in select company. Only three pitchers have struck out 10 batters in their first two starts with the Dodgers: Karl Spooner (1954), Yu Darvish (2017), and Bauer.

Bauer isn’t the only member of the rotation pitching deep into games. Wednesday marked the sixth straight game the Dodgers starter has pitched at least six innings, their longest stretch since May 30-June 4, 2019. That has done wonders for giving the bullpen rest, though Jansen was called on for the second of back-to-back days and blew his first save of the season.

Victor Gonzalez, who recorded his only batter faced for the final out of the eighth inning Wednesday, is the other Dodgers reliever to pitch on back-to-back days. Every other Dodgers relief appearance in the opening week came with at least two days rest.

On offense, the Dodgers were already playing shorthanded with Cody Bellinger out with a calf injury, but then Mookie Betts was held out of the lineup on getaway day after feeling lower back stiffness Wednesday morning. Betts is expected to play in Friday’s home opener, but Bellinger is not.

“I don’t expect him to be in the lineup Friday unless something really crazy happens for the better,” Roberts said. “[The injured list] is still a possibility. We’ll kind of get through tomorrow, get to the ballpark on Friday, and make a decision then.”

The resulting lineup machinations on Wednesday led to catcher Austin Barnes starting at designated hitter for the first time in his career. Barnes singled during a rally for the go-ahead run in the sixth, and nearly had a home run, but A’s left fielder Seth Brown had other ideas in the fourth inning.

The lineup did get some reinforcements though, in the form of Chris Taylor, back in the lineup after missing a game with a left elbow contusion. Taylor doubled, singled, was hit by a pitch, and walked, scoring twice from the leadoff spot, and is hitting .357/.591/.500 on the season. Yes, that’s a .591 on-base percentage, reaching base 13 times in his 22 plate appearances.

Max Muncy has a .531 on-base percentage, including walking four times against the A’s on Wednesday. The Dodgers threatened for most of the day, reaching base 16 times in the game. But, like the first game of the road trip when they struggled to get those runs in, the Dodgers were just 2-for-21 with runners in scoring position.

“Today is one of those days we didn’t cash in on opportunities,” Roberts said. “You’re going to have those days.”

Seven strong innings for Kershaw in Dodgers’ fifth straight win

The contrast between Clayton Kershaw’s first two starts of 2021 is like night and day, and not just because of the time of game. The Dodgers left-hander was in full control on Tuesday night, pitching seven strong innings in a 5-1 win over the A’s in Oakland.

Though the A’s got to Kershaw right away, with consecutive doubles by Jed Lowrie and Ramon Laureano in the first inning giving Oakland a 1-0 — believe it or not, that was the A’s first lead all season, in their sixth game — that was the high point for the home team on Tuesday.

Working around those doubles, Kershaw struck out three batters in the first, and eight on the night, giving him 2,743 strikeouts in his career in the regular season and postseason combined, surpassing Don Sutton’s 2,739 for the most in Dodgers history.

After the two doubles, Kershaw retired 20 of his next 22 batters faced, allowing only a third-inning single by Jed Lowrie and a double off the wall by Stephen Piscotty with two outs in the seventh, the latter ending a string of 12 straight batters retired. Kershaw got through seven innings for the 191st time in 356 regular season starts.

Tuesday was a stark contrast from Kershaw’s opening day start, during which he allowed six runs. After that start in Colorado, manager Dave Roberts mentioned, “The slider just didn’t have the depth that it usually does.”

The slider on Tuesday was so deep, Dennis Miller referenced it in a rant.

Kershaw got 16 whiffs on the slider alone against the A’s, and 21 swings and misses overall, the latter his highest total since July 9, 2017.

Welcome back

The Dodgers answered Oakland’s run right away with the equalizer in the second inning, but took the lead for good on a pair of third-inning home runs, a two-run shot from Max Muncy and a solo job from Edwin Ríos.

For Muncy, it meant a return to where he made his major league debut, with the A’s at the Coliseum on April 25, 2015. But Muncy then was a much different player than Muncy now, and that’s reflected in the stats. In parts of two major league seasons with the A’s, Muncy hit .195/.290/.321 with five home runs in 96 games.

Since joining the Dodgers, Muncy has been one of the most potent power hitters in baseball, hitting .247/.374/.519 with 83 home runs in 342 games since the start of 2018. This was just his third career home run in 49 career games at the Coliseum.

“I don’t know if I can necessarily describe how it feels. You know, there wasn’t really a whole lot of good memories on the other side,” Muncy said Tuesday. “But this is where I made my debut, so that’s always going to be special to me. And I still have a lot of good relationships with the people up there.”

Tuesday particulars

Dodgers-A’s pregame notes and lineups

Cody Bellinger is unavailable Tuesday against the A’s after getting spiked in the series opener, as the Dodgers await tests on his calf. Chris Taylor is out of the lineup as well one day after getting hit by a pitch on the elbow, though he’ll be available in limited capacity.

“Chris is feeling better today, and potentially could be used to run or play defense,” manager Dave Roberts said. “But extension, as far as his swing, he doesn’t feel great about that yet, so we’ll probably stay away from him in that capacity.”

These are the circumstances that led to Mookie Betts starting his first game in center field since joining the Dodgers. Betts played two innings in center field to finish off a game last year, but stuck almost exclusively to right field, save for a lone start at second base, which proved to be more indulgent than a harbinger. Center field though is nothing new for Betts, who started 187 games at the position with the Red Sox.

With Betts in center, Zach McKinstry gets the call in right field, and A.J. Pollock is in left. To finish Monday’s game, after Bellinger was spiked and left the game, Pollock shifted to center field wiith McKinstry in left.

“I just feel that with Clayton [Kershaw], most of the action is going to be out in left field and center field, so for [Betts] willing to go out there and play center and McKinstry in right made sense for tonight’s ballgame,” Roberts said. “You essentially lose, for tonight’s game, two center fielders in Cody and Chris, so tonight we’ll use the next-best option.”

Justin Turner takes his turn at designated hitter on Tuesday night, one day after hitting his first home run of the season. That was the fourth home run of his career in April, in 500 plate appearances. Turner’s career slugging percentage in April is .386, and .494 afterward. In the early going this year, Turner is 6-for-17 with a double, that home run, and two walks, hitting .353/.400/.588.

Edwin Ríos gets the call at third base in the middle game of the series against A’s right-hander Chris Bassitt, the second straight start for Ríos, who started at first base Monday.

Oakland shuffle

The A’s made a few roster moves before Tuesday’s game, placing pitchers Burch Smith (strained right groin) and Reymin Guduan (sprained left thumb) on the 10-day injured list. Utility man Seth Brown and pitcher Jordan Weems were recalled.

Second start of the season for Kershaw, five strikeouts shy of a new record

The Dodgers try for a fifth straight win on Tuesday evening, and Clayton Kershaw makes what has been a regular appearance for him every three years in Oakland.

Kershaw has three no-decisions in three career starts against the A’s at the Coliseum, or whatever it’s called now. In 2012 he pitched eight innings, in 2015 he threw seven innings — and was as mad as I’ve ever seen him on a baseball field — then in 2018 he pitched six innings. He’s allowed four total runs in those previous three starts in Oakland.

Does that mean we’re in for a five-inning outing on Tuesday night?

What’s more important for Kershaw is that he has better command than he did on opening day, when he pitched 5⅔ innings but also allowed six runs and 10 hits to the Rockies, generating only six swinging strikes.

“The slider just didn’t have the depth that it usually does,” manager Dave Roberts said Thursday.

Kershaw could reach a milestone on Tuesday night. Though he only struck out two batters on Thursday, he has 2,528 strikeouts in his career. That’s still 168 behind franchise leader Don Sutton, the Hall of Fame right-hander who died in January. But counting regular season and postseason numbers combined, Kershaw is closing in on Sutton.

Sutton struck out 43 batters in his 11 postseason starts for the Dodgers in 1974, 1977, and 1978, giving him 2,739 combined strikeouts in the regular season and postseason. Kershaw, whose 207 postseason strikeouts are the most by any pitcher in MLB history, has 2,735 combined strikeouts in his career.

With four strikeouts Tuesday night, he’d tie Sutton for the most in Dodgers history, and with five strikeouts Kershaw would stand alone on top.

Dustin May will make his season debut on Monday

The Dodgers took three out of four against the Rockies to open the season. LA now travels to Oakland where they’ll face the winless Athletics for a three-game series. Here are the pitching probables for the series.

Monday: Dustin May vs. Frankie Montas

Entering spring training, Dustin May being in the starting rotation seemed unikely. However, arguably no other pitcher impressed more than he did during March. He appeared in five games and was excellent for the Dodgers, as his performance earned him the final spot in the starting rotation.

In five outings, May posted a 2.37 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. The most impressive number from May’s spring was his strikeout number. In 19 innings, May struck out 21. He had a two-game stretch in which he struck out 13 hitters in 8 2⁄3 innings. This is huge because May has struggled with racking up strikeouts early on in his career. In 90 2⁄3 total big-league innings, May only averages 7.5 strikeouts per nine innings. If he’s able to get that number up and between 9-10, May will be ready to take the next step with his career.

A familiar name will be going for Oakland, as Frankie Montas gets the start. He was traded to Oakland in the Rich Hill trade from years ago. After a really solid 2018-2019 run in which Montas went 14-6 with a 3.13 ERA, he really struggled in 2020. In 11 starts last season, he went 3-5 with a 5.60 ERA, 4.74 FIP and 1.50 WHIP. You can make the case that it was a small sample size, but putting up those numbers over 11 starts is never ideal.

Now, when diving into his season last year there was one major takeaway. At home, he was fantastic for Oakland. In six starts he owned a 2.56 ERA and had 35 strikeouts compared to only 11 walks. When he was on the road, it was a different story. In five starts he posted a 10.13 ERA (!!!). He also had a WHIP of 1.97. Yup. It truly was a tale of two sides. Well, he’ll be at home on Monday, which should benefit him to begin the year.

Tuesday: Clayton Kershaw (0-1, 7.94 ERA) vs. Chris Bassitt (0-1, 5.06 ERA)

It wasn’t a great Opening Day for Clayton Kershaw, as he had his worst start of his career to begin the season. Last week in Denver, Kershaw went 5 2⁄3 innings and allowed six runs to score on 10 hits. His two strikeouts were the fewest he’s had in a start since June of 2019. This will be his fourth career start in Oakland, a place where he’s had success in his career. In three starts, he’s posted an ERA of 1.71 with a 0.86 WHIP.

Chris Bassitt didn’t have a great Opening Day start last week, but it was a little better than Kershaw’s. In 5 1⁄3 innings against the Astros he allowed three runs and issued two walks. Bassitt was fantastic for the Athletics last season, and really has been a solid starter over the last three years. In 2020 he went 5-2 with 2.29 ERA and finished eighth in Cy Young Award voting. Over his last three seasons he’s gone 17-10 with a 3.29 ERA and 127 ERA+.

Much like Montas, Bassitt was exceptional at home last season. In six starts he posted an ERA of 0.72 and had a SO/BB rate of 3.44. On the road things were the complete opposite as his ERA was nearly five.

Wednesday: Trevor Bauer (1-0, 5.68 ERA) vs. Jesus Luzardo (0-1, 9.00 ERA)

Don’t let the ERA fool you, Trevor Bauer was fantastic in his Dodgers debut. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Coors Field and had 10 strikeouts. Then, #Coors happened and before you knew it he allowed four runs. This will be Bauer’s sixth career start in Oakland, a place where he has yet to pick up a victory. He’s 0-3 with a 3.25 ERA.

Jesus Luzardo got roughed up pretty bad against Houston last week, allowing five runs in five innings on eight hits and two home runs. If there was any silver lining to his outing it was the fact he struck out eight batters. For good measure, I thought I should take a look at his home/road splits from last season. Oh, and what do you know, he was fantastic at home and awful on the road. In Oakland in 2020, he went 3-1 with a 2.40 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. On the road, he was 0-1 with a 8.15 ERA and 1.87 WHIP. Well, looks like the moral of this article is.... these pitchers shove in Oakland.
